A WICKED witch, a fiddler on theroof and a pick-pocketing orphannamed Nancy are frolickingthrough Berwick.
The teenage trio has scored soloroles in a major production atSt Kilda’s National Theatre thismonth.
Tahlia Tabone, 13, Jesse Tabone,16, and Jade Auffray, 17 were hand-picked from 1600 students fromthe Children’s PerformingCompany of Australia and cast inthe show.
Pure Imagination features morethan 40 songs, with classics fromStephen Schwartz, Jerry Bock andLionel Bart.
Jesse Tabone is busy rehearsinghis role as Tevye, the father of fivedaughters.
‘‘I’m playing in Fiddler on theRoof,’’ he said.
‘‘I’m very excited but the nerveshaven’t kicked in yet. It’s just a lotof fun for now.’’
On the other end, Jade Auffray ispractising her pick-pocketingtechniques for her role in Oliver.
‘‘This is my favourite time of theyear – production time,’’ she said.
‘‘I can’t wait, I love my part.’’Pure Imagination’s producers
said the show would be a tribute tomusical theatre’s greatsongwriting teams.
‘‘The show will include classicssuch as Frank Loesser’s Guys andDolls, to more modern hits from
Jonathan Larson’s Rent,’’organisers said.
‘‘We honour the pure imaginationthat has brought these wonderfulsongs to the stage.’’
Pure Imagination will be stagedat the National Theatre, St Kilda,from June 8-19.
