The project called for the transportation of 12 no. major Columns, Vessels and Reactors from the vendor’s works in Malacca, Malaysia to the MEG Project site on Jurong Island, Singapore. Land transportation involved a 2 day 19.5km move for each item via public roads between the factory and a beach landing at Tanjung Kling where each heavy lift was rolled onto barges lying aground on the beach at low water.

The client had originally planned to equip a new lay vessel at the port where the flexible lay system was being constructed. Due to a change in schedule, Bertling was requested to ship the complete lay system and deck equipment from the UK to a shipyard in Indonesia. The entire shipment comprised 16,774 cubic metres and weighed 2,021Te.

Flexible Lay System to Indonesia

As the 478Te tower had only two lifting points and base tailing frames, Bertling had to come up with an innovative scheme to tail the tower to vertical using one ships crane and SPMT’s. The first task was to jack the tower up high enough to allow delivery alongside the heavy lift ship at a height that would allow SPMT’s to tail the tower base during lifting. After being delivered alongside the quay, the ships 700Te crane and tackle were rigged to the head of the tower. The base was landed to stillages and the SPMT’s re-positioned under the tailing frames.

Once the ships crane had lifted the head of the tower sufficiently, the SPMT’s at that end were driven out sideways to allow the base end SPMT’s to commence the tailing operation. As the ships crane continued to lift, the SPMT’s travelled slowly towards the vessel until the tower was rotated to vertical at a height that would allow it to pass safely over the coaming of the hold. The 330Te knuckle boom crane was then delivered alongside for loading onto the weatherdeck. The knuckle boom crane and other equipment safely aboard.
