Recent Program Tasks
Moving Forward G&T in Bernards Township
Gifted and Talented Long Range Plan
⦿ Implement a Cluster Grouping Model with Flexible Grouping 3-5
⦿ Hire one gifted specialist for each K-5 school
⦿ Identify and implement technology resources to support G&T and Enrichment in K-5 Math and ELA
⦿ Continue Enrichment K-5 (DI – Differentiated Instruction)
⦿ Create and implement a telescoped G&T math curriculum 3-5
⦿ Fine tune the “Binder” program to better address students’ needs and improve ease of use for staff
⦿ Articulate G&T into WAMS Grade 7 Algebra
Implementation Timeline ⦿ Year One (2014-15)
• Hire two gifted education teachers (Complete)
• Reinvent the current binder program (Complete - Summer 2014)
• Select, purchase and implement a technology solution to support G&T (Complete - Winter 2015)
• Plan for Cluster Grouping Model implementation starting Fall 2015 (Complete – Winter 2015)
• Implement Flexible Grouping in Math and ELA in grades 3-5 (Complete)
⦿ Year Two (2015-16)
• Write telescoped curriculum for Math 3-5 (Summer 2015)
• Hire 2 additional teachers (Move from planning to training and instruction)
• Continue schoolwide enrichment K-5 (Math G&T in grades 4 and 5)
• Implement telescoped math curriculum in grade 3 (One grade per year)
• Implement Cluster Grouping model in grade 3 (One grade per year)
⦿ Years Three Through Five
• Implement a telescoped curriculum and grouping model 4-6
• Implement an enrichment model 6-8
Middle School Additions
⦿ Implement a Cluster Grouping model in
mathematics for Grade 6
⦿ Conduct a 20 minute lunch period math G&T
program - 2 days per week
⦿ Conduct an open option lunch period math
enrichment program - 2 days per week
G&T Criteria 2014-15: 2 Tier Method, Grades 3-5 (also used in 2013-14)
• Tier 1: All students assessed using the Diagnostic Math
Assessment. Approximately 10% of scores by grade level
in each building will be identified for Tier 2
• Tier 2: All students assessed using the MAP assessment.
Approximately 5% of scores by grade level in each building
will be identified for the program
• All previously identified students remain in the program
regardless of the outcome of these assessments
New G&T Criteria 2015-16: Rubric Format with Multiple Measures
• Ability Test:CogAT Form 7 Non-Verbal and Quantitative- SAS
• Achievement Test: MAP Mathematics - RIT
• Teacher Input Scale: Scales for Rating the Behavioral
Characteristics of Superior Students (Renzulli Scales)
⦿ Grade 2 Identification in Spring 2015
⦿ Grade 2 Notification in Summer 2015
⦿ No new identification in grades 3-5 (Current students
remain in program)
Cognitive Abilities Test CogAT ⦿ Utilize Form 7 - Raised ceiling for most able students
⦿ Measures general, abstract reasoning abilities required for
successful learning and problem solving
⦿ Commonly used to help identify students for gifted programs
⦿ Utilized by the district each year prior to 2013
⦿ Quantitative - Number Analogies, Puzzles, and Series
⦿ Non-Verbal - Figure Matrices, Paper folding, Figure Classification
⦿ SAS - Standard age score compares to others of the same age and
utilizes a scale score (50-160)
⦿ Approximately 30 minutes per test
Measures of Academic Progress MAP
⦿Computer adaptive test developed by the Northwest
Evaluation Association (NWEA)
⦿Currently used in grades 3-8 for Math and ELA achievement
⦿Measures where the student is “ready to learn”
⦿Used in 187 New Jersey School Districts
⦿Number Sense - Counting, ordering, place value,
computation, estimation
⦿About 50 minutes to administer
Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior
Students: SRBCSS
⦿ Used in prior BTSD gifted and talented program
⦿ Well vetted tool created by one of the top gifted and talented
researchers (Renzulli)
⦿ Provides a valuable opportunity for staff input
⦿ Motivation - Behaviors that reflect an individual's ability to
bring energy to bear on problems or tasks
⦿ Mathematics - Interests and approaches to solving
mathematical problems and ease in understanding
mathematical concepts
⦿ Completed by grade 2 staff after training on the tool
New G&T Criteria - Grade 2
● Students will need to receive 18 points on the rubric to be identified for
the G&T program in grade 3

Redbird Math’s Adaptive Engine • Assesses conceptual mastery and moves students through
the curriculum accordingly (course motion)
• The computer becomes an intelligent design tool rather than a
simple medium for graphical presentation
• Algorithms are the product of over 40 years of research in the
area of students interfacing with technology
• Course motion creates an individualized learning experience
