Berlin’s seventh annual spring clean-up day is here, when volunteers clear gar-bage and other discarded items from seven roads rep-resenting miles of Berlin streets. Volunteers will meet

Saturday, April 5 at 9 a.m. and work until noon collecting trash.

“We usually collect about 72 bags of trash,” Paul Chester, this year’s event or-ganizer, said.

Chester pointed out that between 20 and 50 volun-teers come out in force every

year to pick up trash from roadsides. The haul includes everything from cans and bottles to broken tires and car parts.

“Last year we had 20-some-thing tires,” Chester said.

The Berlin-Peck Memorial Library hosted a talk on on-line dating March 25 pre-sented by Dating Coach Ronnie Ann Ryan, who an-swered questions and shared advice and stories.

“I woke up on my 40th birthday and I was still sin-gle,” Ryan said. After re-jecting proposals from her high school and college boy-friends, Ryan got an MBA, started working at General Foods, and began her own business.

“I had a very rich, full life but I had forgotten to do something,” she said.

Ryan said that re-entering the dating scene after a long hiatus can be very intimidat-ing, but that an increasing number of people over 40 are single.

“I started thinking I should really get used to the idea that I was going to be alone for the rest of my life,” Ryan said. Then, she started dat-ing aggressively, develop-ing some strategies that she would share with others in her ebooks and sessions with clients.

Dating

partnered, Ryan said. “Online dating isn’t for the desperate,” Ryan added. “There are more than 40 million online singles in America… online dating actually makes a lot of sense.”

Ryan gave advice for mar-

keting oneself successfully in creating an online dating pro-file. It is important to choose a good profile picture, for ex-ample, and to craft a descrip-tion of yourself of the right length that is engaging.

Ryan noted that women generally receive more mes-sages and men generally send more messages. Online dat-ing is best used as a method to find people to meet up for first dates, and is safer than it is sometimes perceived, she said.

Online dating is not much different from regular dat-ing in terms of risks, and fol-lowing commonsense advice will protect daters from risks, Ryan said. It’s important not to give your home address or any other personal iden-tifying information to some-one until you have a chance to get to know them in per-son, and you should schedule your first few dates in well-lit public places, like bars, coffee shops, or ice cream parlors.

One way online dating dif-

fers from dating in person is that you can find out a lot more about a person prior to meeting them, Ryan said, but the best approach in her view is use it as a way to meet for first dates. There’s no re-placement for meeting in per-son to evaluate if you have any chemistry, Ryan said, and it’s better to go out on lots of dates than it is to try to find the perfect person online.

Don’t approach online dat-ing like catalogue shopping, approach it like car shop-ping: meet in person and do a test drive before investing too much in someone, Ryan advised.

Head Librarian of Adult Services Carrie Tyska thanked Ryan for her atten-dance, and encouraged all at-tendees to consider coming to the library’s next big event April 15, when Professional Organizer Faith Manierre will host a talk to share tech-niques and secrets to help re-duce clutter in the home.

Police and fire crews re-sponded to an emergency call March 26 when a fire was re-ported at Automated Material Handling, a waste manage-ment facility located at 655 Christian Lane.

The fire was reported at about 2:15 p.m. and surround-ing towns responded for mu-tual aid, police said.

Berlin Fire Chief Jim Simons reported that all four Berlin volunteer fire depart-ments responded to the fire, which was initially thought to have originated from the interior of the building, but was later discovered to have began at the bottom of a pa-per bale along the building’s exterior wall.

The incident began as a small fire in the building that was rapidly spread by the wind.

Berlin firefighters were joined by crews from Wethersfield, Rocky Hill and

Cromwell, with another en-gine from Meriden standing by. The fire was contained and controlled within an

hour and no injuries were reported. Simons reported damage to the building but the extent of it is currently

unknown.“It’s a building full of pa-

per, but of even more con-cern right now is the wind,”

Simons said March 26. When crews first responded, wind

The Board of Education heard a presentation from staff involved with the Willard Enrichment Learning Laboratories after-school program during the March 25 BOE meeting.

“Students are most moti-vated when they have choices in school,” Willard Principal Salvatore Urso said. The WELL program offers a wide variety of classes to choose from that seek to educate and entertain, with a staff-to-

student ratio higher than is found during the regular ac-ademic day.

WELL coordinator and Willard Art teacher Kristin Vernon explained that WELL offered 26 classes in the past year, and that the program benefited from a grant. Two 10-week sessions were held this year, and many parapro-fessionals assisted as teachers to provide a broad range of classes to students in grades K-5.

More than 200 students attended 13 classes with 27 staff members at the most recent WELL session, which included a creative cooking

class, a reader’s theater class where students wrote and performed their own play, and a Spanish class.

Three students reported their experiences with the program to the board.

Fourth grader Emily Kobus was part of the Willard Editorial Board, a journal-ism class. “The editorial board is where we go around and look at other classes and write about each class,” Emily said. Students visited the other classes, performed interviews, and created a newspaper.

Third grader Alex Spinali explained that she “learned

how much calories you burn in a day,” during the physical education course.

The active class not only allowed students to get ex-ercise, Vernon explained, but also taught them about nutri-

tion. Every class has a strong academic component.

First grader Samantha Dunn said that her favorite part of a class that featured storytime and snacks was when they made cookies.

All is WELL with after-school program

Fire

coming from the north channeled smoke and heat towards crews “like a blow-torch,” Simons said. The first companies on the scene were initially forced to retreat from the fire because of this.

There was minor damage reported to the interior of the building, as well as some minor damage to the exterior wall, Berlin Fire Marshall Steve Waznia said.

No cause is known at this time, Waznia said March 27.

The fire departments from Berlin were at the scene for five hours with assistance from mutual aid departments in surrounding towns.

A representative from Automated Material Handling did not respond to request for comment.

ticular, garbage is known to pile up from where it has fallen off of garbage trucks, Chester said.

Volunteer organizations Chester is coordinating with include Boy Scout troops 41 and 44, some Girl Scout troops, UpBeat, and the Rotary club.

Additional volunteers are welcome to attend. The more people show up, the more thorough a job the volunteers can accomplish, Chester said.

“The streets are terrible and we need all the help we can get.”

Published every Thursday by the Record-Journal Publishing Co. Delivered by mail to all of the homes and businesses in the two ZIP codes serving Berlin – 06037 and 06023.

The Berlin Historical Society Museum, 305 Main St., reopens its doors Saturday, April 5, with its an-nual open house festivities taking place from 1 to 4 p.m.

As the museum enters its 20th season, members are eager to share this resource with the greater community. The museum is all about people connecting through their personal stories, memories and experiences. Whether you were born in the 1920s or the 1990s, you are accumulating a story to tell of a place in time that may never be the same. The museum is a repository for these memories, through photos, written word, oral histories, and artifacts.

For 27 years, the histori-cal society met in members’ homes. Donated artifacts were entrusted to caretakers in hopes the society would eventually have a permanent home for them. As it came to pass, the town agreed to lease the old Peck Library building to the society.

The museum opening in December 1993 was a mo-mentous occasion. Looking back at photos from that first

year, we are struck by how sparse the space appears with a few pieces of tinware on shelves, several paint-ings and pieces of antique furniture placed in cor-ners. Today, the collection includes more than 3,000 items. Displays are built on top of displays and much is stored behind the scenes.

The response from townspeople wanting us to preserve their artifacts is overwhelming. Fortunately, our digital photo archive does not take up space and is an invaluable resource for understanding local history. We are always looking to scan old photos of places, people and events in Berlin so they can be shared. To make an appointment for scanning, call the museum at (860) 828-5114.

Another concern of the historical society is that young people take an in-terest in their history if the memories and the collection are to survive. The museum is available for school and youth group tours. Each year we provide a scholarship to a Berlin High School senior. Recently, the society estab-lished a relationship with Boy Scout Troop 41, and they have been volunteering

at the museum in prepara-tion for the reopening. The troop has created a display on the history of scouting in Berlin.

Continuing our redesign of permanent exhibits, the society has enhanced the toy exhibit. We encourage parents to share family sto-ries, genealogy and local history with their children. Everyone’s story is worthy of being told and remem-bered. At the museum, we honor the lives, not only of Berlin’s more famous citi-zens, but of everyday people who lived here.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary, we’ll have a special program from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 5. Joe Chambrello will share his adventures in metal-detect-ing for historic research.

Joe is a local resident with a passion for responsibly unearthing treasures, not for personal profit, but for telling the story of a proper-ty’s history so that it may be preserved for future genera-tions. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Lorraine Stub is vice chair of Berlin’s Historic District Commission and secretary of the Berlin Historical Society.

Letters to the editor

A responsible budgetTo the editor:The Democratic members of the Town Council, would like

to encourage the citizens and taxpayers of Berlin to attend the annual public hearing on the proposed budget for the Town of Berlin which will take place Tuesday, April 8, 7 p.m., at McGee Middle School.

The Town Council has presented a proposed budget for Berlin that we believe is fair, balanced and responsible. There will be a presentation of the budget proposal at the public hearing and then the Town Council will hear comments from those in attendance who wish to speak. We encourage your comments and we look forward to hearing from you.

If you are unable to make it to the annual public hearing, please feel free to speak directly with Mayor Rochette during her weekly Thursday evening office hours at Town Hall.

Thank you, and we look forward to hearing from you.Mayor Rachel Rochette, Councilor Bill Rasmussen

and Councilor Maggie Morelli

Vote yesTo the editor:Regarding the opinion column by David Evans in the

March 20 issue, I would like to point out that of the budgeted $156,000 for condo refuse rebates, $60,000, at most, is attrib-utable to newly eligible condos, and the remaining $96,000 (roughly) represents continuation of annual rebates that have been in effect and paid since 1998 to only six of the existing condo communities in town.

Contrary to his opinion that reducing taxes for all is more important than subsidizing trash collection costs for condo owners, I would submit that is unfair that the town pay for the cost of trash collection for all residential homeowners, except for condo owners.

The implication that the rebate would not be sustainable in light of high school renovation costs is somewhat insulting to condo owners because on a per-household basis, condos send significantly fewer children into the school system than other residential households. Therefore, condo owners should not be asked to endure a greater sacrifice to pay for education than all other households.

If the town cannot afford this, perhaps it should look at discontinuing paying for trash collection for all residential households. I am not advocating that; I am just pointing out that it would be more equitable than targeting and penalizing condo owners.

I applaud the goal of minimizing tax increases. I attended one of the budget meetings and from my observations the council did a diligent and laudable job in controlling budgeted expenditures. The projected 1.1 percent mill rate increase is significantly less than any increase in the last four years.

I encourage all citizens to vote in favor of the proposed budget at the Tuesday, April 29 referendum.

SOLID CAMPAIGN FOR SPARTANS HOOPS

The McGee Middle School boys basketball teams, coached by Mark Centurelli and Mike Eagle, turned in solid campaigns. The varsity and junior varsity teams are pictured. Varsity team members were Ryan Hyde, Tyler Cop, Malachi Burby, Mike McCarthy, Kyron Medina, Will Salwocki, Mike Constantine, Wes Cantliffe, T.J. Beardsley and Dylan Frisk. | (Submitted)

BHS Hall of Fame: Marturano, McKeonFrank Marturano, Class

of 1966Frank Marturano partic-

ipated in football, baseball, and track and field.

He was a starting line-backer as a freshman, and was a member of the 1963 un-defeated team that won the Northwest Conference cham-pionship as a sophomore.

In 1964, he was a Northwest Conference All-Star. It was during this season that he broke his wrist, but only missed playing in one game.

In 1965, he played as a line-backer and fullback with his wrist, slow to recover from the previous season, still in a cast. The team won the Northwest Conference championship that year, and Marturano was selected to the New Haven Register All-Star Team.

A couple of Marturano’s notable achievements that year included 17 consecutive rushes for positive yardage in a game against Farmington, which included a 92-yard touchdown. In the same sea-son, he recorded 17 tack-les in a single game against

Simsbury. As a junior and senior, he

led the team in tackles, fum-ble recoveries, and inter-ceptions, while leading the offense in touchdowns scored and total yards.

Marturano was person-ally recruited by Notre Dame coach Ara Parsegian; how-ever, a lingering wrist injury

prevented him from attend-ing the university.

In baseball, Marturano was an excellent player un-til his aforementioned wrist injury forced him to quit the sport his junior year; instead, he turned to track and field, where he also excelled.

He was selected as a Nutmeg Boys State honoree

in 1965. He also served as a member of Ed Goodrow’s Key Club, the school service organization, and received the Lion’s Club Citizen Award upon graduation.

Marturano went on to the University of Connecticut, where he graduated with a degree in business admin-istration. There, he met his wife, Antionette, and the couple went on to have three children –Brett, Jodi, and Timothy –and three grandchildren.

Marturano worked with, and managed his kids in t-ball and on to the Farm League. He was a Little League coach with them and continued to coach for 20 years.

Marturano worked with the late Rob Szymachek at Maloney High as a freshman football coach, and helped with the varsity movies.

Also, he played on the Casa Loma softball team that con-sisted of such players as Bob Tarigo, Howie Dickenman, Charlie Jones, Hall of Fame inductee Danny Roberts, and

Marturano is now semi-re-tired and works part-time for Pro Health Physicians as a courier, and is a soccer coach for his grandchildren.

Richard McKeon, Class of 1975

Richard McKeon was a three-year athlete in football and basketball, and a four-year member of the varsity baseball team. He was a cap-tain, co-captain, and tri-cap-tain in all three sports his senior year.

In football, he received the Coaches Award in 1974,

and set the school record for touchdown passes in one year, a record that stood for over 35 years.

In baseball, McKeon hit .348 as a sophomore and made the 1974 American Legion All-Star Team. He hit .363 for the Legion team in 1975 and was selected Most Valuable Player of the Year for the Bolton-Kascia-Patterson American Legion Post team.

In basketball, McKeon won the free-throw shoot-ing award twice; shooting 84 percent his junior year and 92 percent during his senior season.

He was also a recipient of the Richard Patterson Award

for outstanding senior athlete and was a member of Boys State and vice president of the Service Club.

McKeon went on to gradu-ate from Springfield College, where he played varsity base-ball for two years. He then went on to teach physical ed-ucation, and was the varsity baseball coach at Taft High School in California, most well known as the alma ma-ter of Major Leaguer Robin Yount. McKeon coached there for 13 years, where his team made the Los Angeles city semifinals in three of his first six seasons.

He coached several colle-giate and professional play-ers, and one went on to play

in the majors: Gabe Kapler, who played for the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox. That was special for McKeon, as he grew up and still remains an avid Red Sox fan.

McKe o n re ce ive d a Masters in Educational Administration from National University. He currently serves as the athletic director at Venice High School in Los Angeles, where he resides with his wife of 27 years, Jill. They have a daughter in the Peace Corp, serving in Swaziland, South Africa, and another daughter soon to en-ter college.

The Hall of fame induction dinner is scheduled for April 27 at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville. For ticket information, contact Diane Egarzarian: (860) 402-1169; [email protected]. Visit bhshalloffame.org for additional information.

Girl Scouts seek ‘superhero’ volunteers

Berlin Girl Scouts are seek-ing new adult leaders to serve the 280 active scouts in town with an informational meet-ing to be held Friday, April 4, 6 p.m., at Berlin Congregational Church, which has agreed to host the meeting. There are currently 74 leaders with about 10 to 12 girls per troop, although some troops are significantly larger, Wendy Tyburski said. Tyburski is the Berlin registrar for the Girl Scouts.

It would be greatly bene-ficial to get more leaders in-volved to serve the Girl Scouts,

Tyburski said.Laura O’Brien has been a

Girl Scout leader for a year, with a troop of kindergart-eners. “I am very impressed with the Girl Scouts of Berlin,” O’Brien said. “It’s a small com-munity and everyone works together and has a great time.”

Tyburski has been involved with the Girl Scouts since her daughters were in kindergar-ten. “We want to help girls build courage, confidence, and character, and to help make the world a better place,” Tyburski said.

“If you like science, art, or just telling stories, you are ready to be a Girl Scout,” Tyburski said.

Adult leaders are needed for new scout troops that are forming for girls in grades K-5. “We try to get parents excited about being leaders,” Tyburski said.

There’s much more to the experience of Girl Scouts than the cookies the organi-zation is known for. “We want girls and adults, both, to be the star of their own story, to have a chance to be a superhero, to have a real live adventure,” Tyburski said.

March 22, the Berlin Girl Scouts came together for a fa-ther-daughter dance that in-cluded a DJ and a chocolate fountain.

The social activities are

great fun, O’Brien said, but Girl Scouts also perform a va-riety of community service projects and hold fundraisers. Last Christmas, her daughter’s troop performed carols for a nursing home, O’Brien said.

Like Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts can earn badges - or pedals - to be sown onto their uniforms.

For more information, visit GSofCT.org/join or call Wendy Tyburski, (860) 829-1366.
