Principal MERIT AWARDS Congratulations to the following students: We are currently in our last week of Term 3. It has definitely proven to be an extremely busy and productive term, full of amazing achievements and initiatives we are all very proud of. Year 4 & 5 Camps During the previous two weeks, both Year 4 and Year 5 participated in their camp experiences for 2017. Year 4 attended an exciting one night camp in Morisset, and Year 5 travelled to Forster for a two night camp adventure. Both camps were recreational camps, full of activities which were both challenging and enjoyable. All the students I have spoken to had a fantastic time, and I would like to thank our staff for providing our students with this experience. ICAS English & Spelling Bee 38 students participated in the ICAS English assessment this year. They were awarded 2 Distinction, 4 Credit, 3 Merit and 29 Participation certificates. Congratulations to those students; we are all extremely proud of the efforts you have achieved in the area of English. Students will be presented with their certificates this Friday at the morning assembly. Spelling Bee certificates will also be presented at Friday’s morning assembly. Girls Softball Team Last week our girls softball team played against Harbord PS at Bateau Bay in their final knock out game. This was a very challenging game, but our girls showed great sportsmanship. The game consisted of amazing catches and a double play, which entertained the parents. Mrs Morton and Mrs Bath are extremely proud of all the girls, and I believe that we haven’t had a girls softball team achieve such status in the last twenty years. A great achievement Central Coast champions! KNX Our future 2018 Kindergarten children began their transition program last week - this program runs for ten weeks. It was so lovely to meet some new faces and welcome new families to our school. It was also wonderful to welcome back some previous Berkeley Vale Public School families. Ticket holders will receive a note home regarding the new dates and times. Refunds are also available for those who are unable to attend the new scheduling. MERIT AWARDS CONT...

SOFTBALL KNOCKOUT Congratulations to our girl’s softball team who are Central Champions for 2017 after playing in the NSW State Knockout this year. The girls were defeated in their final game, 11-1, with a courageous effort last Thursday against Harbord who have been State champions for the last two years. Our girls played hard and didn’t give up,

with many of them batting and connecting with an extremely fast windmill pitcher, which was quite amazing to watch. The highlights of the game were two brilliant catches and an incredible double play at 2

nd base, not often seen in

this game at junior level. I am so proud of our girls : Renee Monteleone, Olivia Bartlett, Kirra Hillman, Rubie Walker, Tahlia Deane, Matisse May, Xanthe Coskerie, Harmonie Parfitt and Maddie and Karli Metcalf. Once again a big thank you to Lee Robinson for her assistance throughout the year and to Dave Morton for his support and superb coaching on 1st base. To our band of loyal supporters – parents, grandparents and friends, thank you for your enthusiastic support and for transporting our girls to their games. We couldn’t have done it without you. It has been an absolute pleasure to coach your beautiful girls. We have enjoyed a wonderful and memorable journey together and one I will always remember. Thank you.

LOST CLOTHING If you have lost an article of clothing we will have a table outside the office on Wednesday 20 September after 2.10pm. Please come and take what you need. After Wednesday the left over from this stock will be donated to St Vin-cent de Paul. Please clearly label your child’s be-longings to help us return any lost prop-erty to them. Each week the lost property tub in the foyer is overflowing with lost clothing, the majority of which we are una-ble to return because these items have no name on them.

THE GREAT BENEFITS OF THE SCHOOL BUS Have you considered looking into using the school bus service as a way of getting to and from school?

Here’s some information you may not have known that will help you make up your mind.

Kids catching the bus instead of parents driving them to school has so many benefits, mainly it can help by

Reducing the congestion that increases unsafe behaviours.

Did you know that bus travel is the safest form of land travel in Australia?

Did you know that school children between the ages of 5 and 16 years, travelling to and from school, are

Substantially safer travelling by bus than other modes of transport?

Did you know that studies run by the Institute of Transport and Logistical studies, University of Sydney show that travelling by bus is 4.4 times safer than walking, 55 times safer than riding a bike and 1.38 times safer than being driven to school?

Did you know that until the end of Year 2 Opal cards are free for all students?

Did you know that if you live over 1.6km (most direct route) from the school, you can get a free Opal card?

Did you know that it only costs approx $1/per day ($52/term) to get a bus pass?

Other benefits of catching the bus to and from school include:

Reducing traffic around the school, thus increasing safety for all our kids

Reducing environmental damage from running your car

Not having to get to school ½ hour early to get a parking space

Promoting and encouraging safe independence with our children

Drop off right outside the school gate (or closer to the school gate then you can get dropping your child safely with your car)

Extra ‘me’ time for busy mums.

Apply online through Transport NSW for your child’s Opal card.
