    Seek God’s Glory

    Njt kfpikiaj; NjL

  • Dear Friends, It is a joy and privilege to reach you through this first Berita TAC issue. Allow me to share the Vision that God has given for us as a Conference. We need to take heed.

Why do we need to seek God’s Glory? The Bible teaches us that man was created to bring glory unto God. We need to seek His glory in every part of our lives. Man lost his God given glory at the Garden of Eden when he allowed sin to taint him and influence him.

How do we seek God’s Glory? Firstly, we must always seek God’s glory through who we are. Our lives must be lived in a way that it is a fragrant offering unto Him. Romans 12: 1-2 teaches us about it. Only then others would see us and glorify God for what He has made us to become. It is not our position or achievements but our character as individuals. Secondly, we must seek God’s glory through everything we do. I Corinthians 10:31 tells us to seek God’s glory even in everyday matters like eating and drinking. We learn from Matthew 5:16 that when we do something that pleases God and man, others will see it and glorify the father.

What happens when we seek God’s Glory? Whenever God is glorified His blessings are sure to follow. We read God promising this in Exodus 20:24. When God’s agenda is put as first and is honored in everything we do, all else will fall into place. Jesus promises that in Matthew 6:33.

What do we need to do to seek God’s Glory? It is important that we repent from any aspect in our life that does not bring glory to God. We need to repent as individuals, families and even as churches. We need to humble ourselves and ask God to reveal our hidden faults. It is a daily affair. We cannot seek God’s glory one day and forget about it the next day. Seeking God’s glory must become our top priority and be inbuilt into our psyche in such a way that it becomes our lifestyle. When that happens, our decisions will begin to please God, our words will please God and our attitude towards others will reflect our inner compass that always point to the direction of God’s glory. If we are humble enough and are willing to learn, God will surely help us to learn what it means to Glorify Him through who we are and everything we do as the Tamil Annual Conference.

    GOD BLESS YOU

    Rev. Dennis Raj President, TAC

  • All Praise and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ!

It is my joy to write a few lines to the first issue of Berita TAC, for the year 2017. I do so on behalf

of my two Associate Lay Leaders too - Samuel Peter and Guna David.

The President's theme for our Conference is "Seeking God's Glory", precisely the purpose of His

Body and Bride, the Church - I Cor.10:31! We all must align ourselves to this vision, cascade it

down to every TAC member and move forward in the coming days, to seek only His glory. Jesus

glorified the Father on earth and asked the Father to glorify the Son in return. (John 17:4-5) As

we seek only God's glory, He will glorify us in due time!

The theme focuses more on our motives than our actions. Nothing can be hidden from the Lord!

He sees our heart (I Sam.16:7)! Let us learn to work along with our Pastors in unity, seeking only

    the Lord's glory.

I take his opportunity to congratulate the Chairman and members of the Board of Publication

and especially the Editor, for taking on this difficult task. I assure you of our prayers.

    Thank you. God bless.

    S. Selvaraj

  • HOPE IN THE JESUS OF NOW John 11:25-26

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even

though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11 records the event of the death and resurrection of Lazarus and the discourse that Jesus

    has with Martha and Mary.

Mary, Martha and Lazarus were close friends of Jesus. Each time Jesus went to Jerusalem, he

would visit them at Bethany, about two miles from Jerusalem.

One day Lazarus fell sick. The sisters tried hard to control his temperature but he only

    deteriorated.

When the sisters heard that Jesus was nearby, they sent a messenger to inform him of the grave

    situation.

Vs. 3 The message, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” There seems to be an apparent paradox

between Vs. 5 and Vs. 6. Jesus loved Mary, Martha and Lazarus – yet when he was informed that

Lazarus was gravely ill, Jesus delayed his visit by two days.

The purpose of the delay is recorded in Vs. 4 – He was going to be glorified through the event of

Lazarus’ death and that people will see God’s power.

Vs. 11 Jesus simply says that Lazarus is sleeping and that he will go to wake him up.

Vs. 17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, Lazarus had been dead and buried for four days.

Vs. 18-19 The relatives of the bereaved had come to comfort the family.

Vs. 20-21 Martha was the first to run out and greet Jesus. Her cry was, “Lord, if you had been

here, my brother would not have died.”

In her grief, she could only see the Jesus of four days ago – a past Jesus.

Vs. 23 Jesus said, “Your brother will rise again.”

Vs. 24, 27 Martha’s response, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Her

mind switches to the Jesus of the future – that Lazarus will be raised on the last day. But Jesus

wants her to see the Jesus of now, who is standing before her.

Vs. 25 Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live even though

he dies and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

All the verbs are in the present. In other words, Jesus is trying to say, “Look at me Martha, “I am

the Jesus of NOW – not the Jesus of four days ago. I am your hope here and now.”

    5

  • Very often it is quoted – the Jesus of 2000 years ago – no doubt it is important because Jesus

existed at a point of history. But when we keep dwelling on the past Jesus, we may fail to see the

    Christ of the present.

Vs. 32 Mary came to see Jesus – fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother

    would not have died.”

Jesus’ heart was broken. Mary had great devotion for her Master. She had often sat at his feet

and learned from him – one who had the good portion.

Yet, she too, like Martha, failed to see Christ the present hope – she only saw him as the Christ

    of four days ago.

Vs. 33-34 When Jesus saw her and her relatives weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit. Vs.

    35 mentions that Jesus wept.

He wept because he identified himself with the grief of the people.

He wept because they failed to see him as the only hope in the situation.

Vs. 38-39 Jesus came to the tomb and ordered the tombstone to be moved.

But they were hesitant. The body would smell by now. Mary and Martha looked at their relatives

    – it would be a religious sacrilege to disturb the dead.

    They heard two voices:

World – listen to me – don’t listen to God.

Vs. 40 The voice of God (Jesus) – Remove the stone and you will see the power (glory) of God –

you will have your hopes fulfilled!

Vs. 41-44 Jesus prayed to the father and commanded Lazarus to come out. Lazarus is raised from

the dead – that was the hope in Jesus!

Jesus had been our hope in the past – hope of our forefathers. He is the hope of our future –

hope in the resurrection and eternal fellowship with the Father.

Most of all, He is our present hope – hope in the Jesus of here and now!

    With Easter Greetings,

    Rev. Dr. A.E. Joseph

  • KUCHING TAMIL MINISTRY – Van Dedication

Hebrews 11: 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

It is really marvelous to see how God works in Kuching.

When we first landed in Kuching on 12th June 2015, we knew that God had a plan for the Tamil people in Kuching.

During the first two meetings, we had to hire a car for the ministry which cost RM 65 per day. However, as the group began to grow, God provided a van from FMC church and a car from an individual from SIB church. God began to bless the ministry and within a year, we were using 2 vans and a car to fetch people for our Friday service.

As the numbers grew, God began to speak to us to buy a van of our own. On 12th Dec 2015, I brought along 2 ladies from TAC Methodist Women (MW President- Mrs. Sakuntala David and Mrs. Shanti Sekhar) together with my wife to a show room. We laid our hands on a van and in FAITH, claimed it in “In the name of Jesus”.

On January 2016, the BOE met and felt the need to buy a van of our own. They too proposed to buy a new van for the Tamil Ministry in Kuching. This proposal was brought to the TAC EXCO meeting on 19th February 2016 by the BOE Chairman Rev. Vijaya Dass. The EXCO unanimously agreed to buy the van in FAITH although there was a financial issue.

It only began to materialize on 13th July 2016 when the FMC pastor told me that they were contributing RM 20,000.00 towards the purchase of the van. I could not believe it. Tears started to flow from my eyes. God works in mysterious ways. My first word was “Praise God”. I immediately contacted Mr. Anthony Row and asked for his advice. Without hesitation he told me “I will find the money. Go and book a new van”. Upon his advice, I booked the van on the same day through FMC.

The salesman told me that the van will only be available in 3 months, but by God’s grace the van came in within 10 days. The van was finally bought under the name of Faith Methodist Church on 6th Oct 2016. A soft dedication service for the van was held by Rev. Pau with some of his Senior citizens on 10th Dec 2016.

During the Exco meeting on Oct 21st, Rev. DB Laurence made a request to the President to officially dedicate the van. On 12th Dec 2016, the van was dedicated by Rev. C.Jeyaraj together with Rev. Pau, Senior Pastor of FMC. BOE Chairman, Rev. Vijaya Dass was also present in this event.

I sincerely believe that this van was bought in FAITH. It was the RM 20,000.00 contribution by the FMC that moved TAC.

I would like to thank our EXCO, BOE, FMC church and last but not least, to our Lord Jesus who worked in a marvelous way.

    TO GOD NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE

    To God be the Glory

  • K.I.S.S (Keep It Short Susan) A Eulogy of Mrs.Sarojini Thiruchelva

Aunty Saro was born on the 7th of June 1926

to Rev.N.G Manickam and Helen Julia Gideon.

So began her sojourn on this earth for 90 years

2 months and 5 days. The word responsibility

was synonymous with Aunty Saro. The

Manickam Family was a very big family. A

beautiful young lass, she caught the eyes of

many. To be equipped for a job, she took up

short hand, and finally landed herself a job in

the Inland Revenue Board, Suleiman Building,

Kuala Lumpur. Secrecy was at the top of her list

    of virtues.

1965- Aunty Saro walked down Tamil

    Methodist Church Brickfields’s aisle, escorted

by her father, the late Rev. N.G. Manickam , to

wed my dear Uncle Chelvam, the tall,

handsome man, then a teacher at MBS Sentul,

who had swept her off her feet. Love knew no

boundaries. Uncle Chelvam had a sporty 2

door maroon sedan and was so good looking

with his red scarf tied around his neck,it

reminded me of some of those golden movies

we used to watch. Romance was in the air and

I always envisioned uncle and aunty driving off

in to the sunset. So much for my romantic

    heart!

1983- After 18 years of marriage, my aunty’s

heart was ripped apart when her darling

Chelvam died of a massive heart attack in the

wee hours of the morning of 29th April 1983.

Uncle Chelvam spoke little but when he did,

one short sentence would suffice. I still

remember his last words to Aunty Saro, ‘why

so many church meetings on public holidays.

Holidays should be time for families to get

together, husbands and wives to spend quality

time with each other, parents and children

having a day out .He was called upon, very

often, to serve as one of the adjudicators in the

Labour Court. May 1st was Labour Day – and

there was no rest or respite for the labourer. I

leave you to deduce what he meant.

    Nostalgia- Christmas memories in Taiping.

Uncle & Aunty would arrive at 1.00am on

Christmas morning, every year. No choice-

Uncle Chelvam was working with Matsushita

and the Japanese work ethics is work, work

    and more work.

After Uncle Chelvam’s death, Aunty Saro’s

Christmases, New Years and Easters took a

different direction. She spent them with her

younger brother Arul Macroy and his dear wife

Belinda in their home and Amachi’s home.

TMC Brickfields played a great role in Aunty

Saro’s life so did so many organizations of

which my dear aunty gave her time, talent,

tapestry woven to heal the fragments of her

hurting heart. In 1970, when my mother was

promoted as a dental sister and transferred

from Seremban to Kuantan, lo and behold, it

was Aunty Saro and Uncle Chelvam to the

rescue. They looked after me, a skinny 10 year

old and my 4 year old sister Sheila for almost a

month until my mum had settled in. I lost my

dad at the age of 12. Both Uncle Chelvam &

Aunty Saro filled that void to some extent. I

have lovely memories as a child of going to the

Port Dickson beach with them. Uncle Chelvam

never battered an eyelid when buying the

most expensive dress in shop, as a gift for me

    and my sister.

    12

  • - From a flat on the 4th floor in Walter Granier Road, Imbi, aunty & uncle went about

    their lives.

    - It was a dream come true for Aunty Saro when they shifted to a rented house in Jalan

Maarof, Bangsar. Life took on a new meaning when finally they moved in to their own

matrimonial home at 38, Jalan Pudina. Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar.

    1983 to 2016

It wasn’t easy to move on after the demise of Uncle Chelvam but with grit, determination, the

Lord’s strength, family support, church support, cell group member’s support, friends’ support,

companions who stayed in her home – she moved on. Gosh! Aunty Saro always had a penchant

for rearing cats and a dog as pets and they were pretty protective of her. I was terrified of them

because they laid more claim to her than even I as her niece. Reflecting on how to describe my

aunty, I came up with the acronym S.A.R.O.J.I.N.I.

    S - Stubborn A - Astute R - Refined O - Overcomer of all odds J - Jovial to those who knew her well I - Intimate with Her Heavenly Father N - Noble I - Inspiration to many

I have always seen Aunty Saro as a strong person but on three occasions she wept uncontrollably

when her darling husband Chelvam passed away, her one and only surviving brother Arul

Macroy Manickam passed on to glory in 2014, and finally, in June 2016 when my mum held her

hand, somehow, she sensed it would be the last time she saw her siblings Vasantha, Rammi,

Kasturi and Esther .She was going home to Her Maker.

I love you, Aunty Saro and I bid farewell to you. 90 Years. I’ll miss your famous quote you always

threw at me “What took you so long to get here. I am here now, aunty!

Pudina Road and the huge vepanai tree outside your house will surely miss you, dear Aunty

Saro, stalwart of faith. The resounding chorus of the famous Wesleyan hymn ‘It is well, it is well

with my soul’ rings in our hearts.

  • Home Blessings Charles H. Spurgeon.

He blesseth the habitation of the just. (Proverbs 3:33)

He fears the Lord, and therefore he comes under the divine protection even as to the roof which covers himself and his family. His home is an abode of love, a school of holy training, and a place of heavenly light. In it there is a family attar where the name of the Lord is daily had in reverence. Therefore the Lord blesses his habitation. It may be a humble cottage or a lordly mansion; but the Lord's blessing comes because of the character of the inhabitant and not because of the size of the dwelling.

That house is most blest in which the master and mistress are God fearing people; but a son or daughter or even a servant may bring a blessing on a whole household. The Lord often preserves, prospers, and provides for a family for the sake of one or two in it, who are "just" persons in His esteem, because His grace has made them so. Beloved, let us have Jesus for our constant guest even as the sisters of Bethany had, and then we shall be blessed indeed.

Let us look to it that in all things we are just? in our trade, in our judgment of others, in our treatment of neighbors, and in our own personal character. A just God cannot bless unjust transactions.

  • Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I am glad to write again on another Christmas Celebration. This year the celebration was held on December 4th 2016 at Dewan Orang Ramai Bandar Rinching at 8pm in collaboration with our church. This event was solely organized to preach the gospel to the residents of Semenyih and glorify our Almighty God. This event was an outcome of great cooperation from church members, advice from our church Pastor Rev. M. Joseph, great efforts by cell group leaders and not forgetting the ever wonderful grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The title of the event was “Athisayamanavar” which tells the great story of Jesus Christ. There may be many great people in the world but we should not forget the fact that Jesus Christ is the greatest of them all. The event includes a drama of the life of Jesus Christ from the miraculous birth till the second coming which was done excellently by four members using visual aid. This drama focuses mainly on the birth of Jesus, righteous life of Jesus, miracles by Jesus, Jesus’ death, Jesus’ resurrection and his second coming. The pastor then delivered a short sermon based on the drama which explained in detail the great story of Jesus. The audience were also entertained with dances, solo songs and children programs. These programs were well coordinated and filled with jokes and quizzes by the masters of ceremony, Mr. Arvind and Mr. Nelson. I believed that everyone greatly enjoyed the programs.

We also had a gift session and dinner. How can there be no gifts and meals when we talk about the greatness of our Lord? Our heavenly Father gave His one and only son Jesus as the greatest gift to us so that we could have eternal life. We are obliged to serve others as how Jesus has served us. As such, there were door gifts for all. Gifts in the form of groceries were given to the needy families and 30 hampers were given out as lucky draw gifts. This event which lasted about two hours was attended by a few VIPs and 200 people who then returned home with leaflets about Jesus.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the church LCEC members, cell group leaders and above all, the Almighty God. All glory to Him. Amen!

    Pastor Rev M. Joseph

  • Theme: LOOKING BACK TO LOOK FORWARD

    Background Context

History is dynamic, not static. It is not merely a matter of the recitation of bare facts to be

appropriated for today or assimilated to the present. At every turn God does something new.

And we are presenting a platform whereby as followers of the Living Word and Loving Christ, we

would be able to understand together what God has in store for Tamil Annual Conference under

the bigger umbrella of Methodist Church of Malaysia.

    Aims

    1. Understand Methodist Heritage and Mission

    2. Tamil Annual Conference Mission for TODAY!

    3. History enables us to interpret again the Bible and the stories, sayings and contexts of

Jesus for TODAY in the light of our OWN STORIES, sayings and contexts.

    4. To present a picture of a ‘what wonders God hath wrought’ view of Methodism

    5. To respond to the gospel of God’s love for all and live it out in worship and mission.

    Summed UP!

Learn and care and serve the Methodist way.

    Church growth

rom here? by TAC President, Rev. Dennis Raj

    Who is it for?

Everyone who takes an interest in the growth of local Methodist church, District and the

    Conference

    Why do we need it?

Methodism has a rich heritage of 'conferring' as a means of listening to what God may be

prompting us to do and to be as disciples of Jesus Christ. The History Forum offers an opportunity

for all Methodists under TAC churches to confer together to participate in shaping and forming

the future work and programmes that the local churches, along with the district and boards at

the conference, will undertake in the coming months and years. It’s an opportunity for a wide

cross-section of TAC congregation to share, and to discern where God is leading us.

    Summary

The practice of remembering and the value of heritage to the faith journey are a deeply rooted

Biblical principle, which John Wesley endorsed.

In his sermon, ‘The General Spread of the Gospel’, John Wesley asserted:

‘As God is one, so the work of God is uniform in all ages. May we not then conceive how he will

work on the souls of men in times to come by considering how he does work now? And how he

has wrought in times past?’ Re-telling the story of the early and later Methodists’ personal piety

and social witness helps to re-envision these for today, making our memories uncomfortable and

even dangerous. They can stimulate again the Methodist movement for evangelization and

transformation of individuals and society today.
