Editorial PP Quah Sek Cheng President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

Are you Reading the Weekly bulletin?

“You will find that our Rotarians are Illiterate” said PDG Paul Lee in jest.

It was said in reply to our Eager Beaver Organising Chairman PP Chow Tian who was

briefing on the “Green Your Community” project during one of the club meetings; when he lamented

that despite the printed announcements in our earlier bulletins, some members still appear to

be uninformed of this major club project.

Although these were all spoken in good humour, there may be some elements of truth in the matter.

In this information age, we get overloaded with too much information daily. So much so that we do not have enough time to read all the letters, memos, e-mails and text messages that we receive in any one day. In addition, we have to skim through the newspapers, professional/trade magazines, club magazines, Rotary publications, junk mails and of course, our Berita Pudu. I must confess that I was no better. I had been committing the same “offense” of just spending enough time to “scan” through Berita Pudu every week.

However, by taking on the President’s post, I had the opportunity to work closely with our bulletin Editor PP Quah in the last few months. I am humbled to learn that so much love, care and sweat had been put into the weekly Berita Pudu by the Editor. The Editor’s wife, Ann Lin was concern with the “stress” that our beloved Editor had to go through to ensure that each week, the bulletin has interesting and good contents and is free of grammatical and typographical errors. In addition, true to his artistic self, he designed the cover, peppered the bulletins with humorous caricatures and the page layouts are always perfect.

We are also grateful to many of our members who contribute articles, news and photos to the bulletin. Not forgetting our dear Corinne of C&D Trading who conscientiously been printing and delivering the bulletins to us on time every week; and PP Dato Muslim who without fail, been uploading the weekly bulletins onto our club website.

Dear Pudu Rotarians, I urge you to please spare sometime to read Berita Pudu. It is the best way to feel the Pudu Heartbeat!

Just as a practical test/survey, will those Pudu Rotarians who read this article please send me an e-mail me at [email protected] or a text message at 012 377 8713?

In Rotary Service,President RY 2010/2011

September is designated the NEW GENERATION MONTH. Its a good time to reflect that Pudu have been an active promoter of the importance of the New Generation. To date the Club has sponsored one Rotaract Club and 8 Interact Clubs and its no small feat as this means that the Club is actively guiding even as it is promoting the opportunity for these youths to gain self-confidence, learn leadership skills and understand the meaning of fellowship and friendship stressing the recognition of the worthiness of every individual.

It is a well known fact that often the satisfaction for Rotarians who are actively involved with these youths is very simply seeing the blossoming of these tentative youths into confident individuals through the active participation of activities organised by the club. For this to be meaningful, Rotarians must set the right example to be emulated. Speak to our New Generation Chairman Rtn. Jeffery Ong and you will see enthusiasm gleaned from many enriching observation of the progress of these young people. It is a good month to spare a thought for Rtn. Jeffery who has the unenviable task of looking after the youths and if he so calls for help, do volunteer to make his work a little lighter. It will make his day.

This month will see the conclusion of the ELOCUTION CONTEST for the Interactor schools. This is a project very ably chaired by PP VG Chandran who would surely love to see a large crowd at the finals. This contest will showcase the ability of students to express themselves in public in front of a large audience, with winners walking away with cash prizes for themselves and the schools they represent.

Last month we witnessed the induction of our first new member for the year, Rotarian LAURA LEE. It is our duty to make our newest member feel at home and not leave this task only to Rtn. Steven Oon who is her proposer. The earlier a new member can settle comfortably into the Club, the sooner will the enthusiasm and spirit of volunteerism will be awakened. We welcome our latest addition and hope she will find her niche within our Club and find her calling in Pudu Rotary.

The Editor will be away for just over a month commencing 9th September. PP RICHARD LIEW and ANNIE TAN has agreed to help with the production during his absence. Of course PP Chandran and PP Albert will continue to assist and even DAISY CHIU has volunteered to help out if necessary. Assistant Editor PP Phang is still on medical leave till the end of the year and we all look forward to him coming back then.

For all the help extended to the Editor much grateful thanks is in order and no doubt they will continue to produce our Berita Pudu for the enjoyment of our members. It feels great when one has a large group of shoulders to lean on when help is required. Thank you all.

Pudu News

It was a sparse crowd that attended the Club meeting this Monday 30th August as today is the eve of our national holiday to celebrate our “Merdeka” or Independence day.

PP ALBERT LIM was the acting sargeant-at-arms and he quickly welcomed everyone which included today the attendance of our DG LIM KOK BENG.

VP HENG next took to the rostrum to do the fines session which he did in rapid time and then PP ROBIN read out this week’s Rotary Information prepared by PP CHANDRAN.

President CHOY YING then took over the proceedings to make her announcements (see under President’s Announcements). She also made time for our dynamic PP CHOW TAIN to make his passionate plea to our Rotarians to come and support the launch of the GREEN YOUR COMMUNITY project on the 19th September.

He profusely thanked PP DATO JASANI for able liaison with DEWAN BANDARAYA and procuring our Dato Bandar to grace the occasion on that day. PP Chow Tain also didn’t forget the roles played by PP ALBERT LIM (for PR) and RTN TAN PENG HUAT who showed his dedication by showing up for an important project meeting just two hours before the passing of his beloved mother at age 93.

PP KH LOW was next invited to make his pitch for support for the forthcoming DISTRICT CONFERENCE which he stressed is only some 100 days away. Past RI PRESIDENT BICHAI RATTAKUL has accepted our invite to be the keynote speaker and we have

PDG PAUL LEE to thank for making the contact and arrangements.

KH also mentioned that the “PLATTERS” will be singing at the District Conference.

PP KH Low then asked for help to be extended to PP MIKE TUNG to visit clubs in the District to help bring the number of registrants from 200-plus to our target of 500. PP ALBERT LIM also needs help to engage exhibitors to take up space during the conference, and PRESIDENT CHOY YING will need help to procure advertisers for the souvenir programme.

RTN MOK SIN next was called to introduce our guest speaker RTN LEE SU ZANE, who gave us her classification talk on Interior Architecture.

At the conclusion of her talk and the Q & A time, secretary RTN ANNIES gave his report before the meeting closed after the raffles draw which was won by PDG Paul Lee.

d. Ann Esther (PP Dato Dr Lee Hoo Teong’s wife) had a successful knee cap surgery and is now resting at home.

e. Director Tan Peng Huat’s mother passed away peacefully on Friday 27 August 2010 at the age of 95.

Upcoming events,a. The Interact Elocution Contest will be held this

coming Saturday on 4 September at 9.30 am at SMK Methodist, KL. Please come along to support.

On the District Level,a. I would urge all Pudu Rotarian s to help out on the

organizing of the District Conference. This is a club project and our whole club must support the event.

b. There will be an INTER-DISTRICT INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP EVENING organised by RC Danau Desa on 30th September 2010 at Perdana Ballroom - Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Club, Kuala Lumpur. Our District Governor Lim Kok Beng and District Governor Olivannan of District 3230 lead the two districts to an evening of friendship. The District comprises of clubs in and around the city of Chennai (formerly – Madras), South India. The cost is set at RM70.

Rtn. Mok Sin introduced our speaker Rtn Lee Su Zane.

She was born in Petaling Jaya and will marry this year. She attended High School at the Samuel Marsden Collegiate School in Wellington, New Zealand. She was at the RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia) and graduated with BA(Hons) in Interior Design.

She currently practice Interior Architecture and Design with the firm called Zanish Group Sdn. Bhd.

Her passion is traveling, design, architecture and cooking.

Rtn Lee Su Zane explained that her work can be best described as the final finishing to a building. The planning of interior architecture involves psychological consideration besides the special planning considera-tion that involves both the exterior and the interior.

Her work included interior design to cinema, bar lounges, houses etc. She works with engineers, architects and others to carry out her design. Her toughest assignment probably is the design of a male toilet and one can understand why! PP Albert Lim was observed to want to offer some advice?

Of interest she mentioned the use of mirrors to make a small space appear large, and placing mirrors at the corners of a wall have the effect of enlarging it. Colours have psychological effect on a person and white colours tend to confuse a person who suffers sight impairment, somewhat “unfriendly”.

When asked if she consider “green” in her design she opined that oftentimes she would consider to recycle, or to save energy she would consider solar energy and the use of LED lights to reduce energy consumption. She also mention rainwater harvesting and use of good ventilation, high ceiling and heat reduction is important to reduce energy use.

For those Pudu Rotarians present her talk gave us an insight into her vocation and Rtn Edward Lee thanked her on behalf of the Club for enlightening us.

NEW GENERATIoNS“PolIo & WHAT THE WoRlD IS DoING AbouT IT”? (Reported by PP VG Chandran)

On Wednesday June 30th, by 9.00 am, the Interactors of SMK Dato Onn Interact Club were all set to open the doors of their Exhibition Hall to the rest of the school, teachers and Rotarians. An excellent effort indeed!

Our Pudu Rotarians were led by President Leong Choy Ying, New Generations Director Jeffrey Yap, Interact Chairman George Heng, Vice President C.T. Heng, PP VG Chandran and PP Gary Lim.

The PROGRAMME was well planned and executed. The SONG “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson was well sung by all the Interactors with zest and this added ‘much’ meaning to the occasion.

After the ‘30 minutes talk’ on Poliomyelitis and introductions, the Exhibition was officially opened by Rotarians and Teachers lining in front of a long ribbon, together, ‘ripped’ the paper ribbon. There were well illustrated charts about “POLIO” I.U. Director Itc.Jowel Beh did the explanations with President Itc. Tan Ren Jee helping out. There were also two (2) PPT Presentations on “POLIO” switched on for continued viewing. The auction was well conducted with our Rotarians participating actively. Among the teachers present were Senior Asst. Yusof and Puan Chong. Indeed, it was an EXCELLENT AND WELL ORGANISED INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING DAY…..

When asked: What did the exhibition meant for the rest of the school, Itc Jowel Beh added,

“The exhibition was one of the ways to raise awareness among the students of SMK Dato’ Onn. The talk was around 30 minutes. We also thought of an interesting and result-oriented way to give the students information about Polio. Hence, we had games such as Hopscotch and Football, which require the use of legs, so that students may also know the complications and suffering polio patients have to go through being paralysed. They are not as fortunate as us, so we should not take things for granted!”

PP VG: How successful was the auction?

Itc Jowel Beh: The auction was very successful! We were very surprised that we could collect a total of RM310.00! Keeping our promise, we will be donating

RM235.00 to Rotary International to help wipe polio from the face of Planet Earth. A small sum but COMES FROM GENUINE HEARTS of our Interactors.

Well, what can we Rotarians say! We can learn a little about making a difference no matter how small, it’s the thought and real concern.

coming Saturday on 4 September at 9.30 am at SMK Methodist, KL.

SYABAS INTERACTORS OF SMK DATO’ ONN INTERACT CLUB

Interviewed by PP VG, Itc Jowel Beh revealed that many things made him want to do an I.U. Day about Polio. “The first time I heard about Poliomyelitis was

Meeting also heard PP Chow Tain’s impassioned thanking of members in his organizing committee for the “Green Your Community Project”. Also PP K.H.Low calls for help to prepare for the final push for the District Conference in December.
