European Commission Selects HP to Drive Security for Data Sharing in the Cloud
Brussels, March 27, 2014 — HP today announced it has been selected by the European Commission (EC) to coordinate the CoCo (confidential and compliant) Cloud project , which aims to ensure that users can share data in the cloud securely and privately share data.(1)
Aligned with the EC’s latest strategy to make Europe a single market for cloud computing, Coco Cloud will provide a flexible, legally compliant framework for secure data exchange between end-users and the cloud.
“The goal of Coco Cloud is to create a foundation for the cloud security model,” said Jakub Boratynski, head of Trust and Security Unit within DG CONNECT for the European Commission. “It will help overcome regulatory and legal issues among EU countries to ensure that sensitive data is carefully controlled and always protected by context-adaptive solutions. As trust in cloud increases, so will the trust of users in cloud services, ultimately benefitting the digital economy and society in general.”(1) This project is funded under the European Union’s Seventh
Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013), grant agreement No. 610853; www.coco-cloud.eu

Why Open Source & OpenStack?
Open Source is not tied to a single vendors roadmap with contributions from a large community of SME’s and developed with a broader set of use cases in mind.
• Transparency into governance, roadmap, blueprints, and development
• Open API – Open platform for ecosystem to develop value-added solutions (*aaS)
• Common Architecture for both public and private cloud deployments
• Risk Mitigation - no vendor lock-in, availability of source code
OpenStack is the largest open source cloud computing platform, a massively scalable solution that controls large pools of compute, storage and networking resources
• Community open source with contributions from 1600+ developers and 220+ participating organizations
• Open web-based API Programmatic Infrastructure as a Service
• Plug-in architecture; allows different hypervisors, block storage systems, network implementations, hardware agnostics, etc.
