Dear Friends in Music,

The Marywood University Department ofMusic, Theatre, and Dance is pleased toannounce a special event for the spring semester of 2011. The Marywood UniversityJazz Ensemble, under the direction of TomHeinze, will offer a three-day festival dedicated to the works and contributions ofAmerican jazz legend, Benny Carter. Mr.Carter's career in musical performance andcomposition lasted for over seventy years andencompassed most of the twentieth century. He is credited with being a major and lastinginfluence on the evolution of American Jazzfrom its earliest incarnations in ragtimethrough the swing era. Carter joined other jazzgreats such as Benny Goodman and FletcherHenderson in developing and refining the performance practices we identify as “swingplaying.” Those practices have become thebedrock of every stylistic advance in Jazz sincethe 1930s and they have contributed to all thesucceeding genres we enjoy today. BennyCarter's long and varied career makes him aperfect study of that ongoing evolution andensures his place in the very center of Jazz history.

The “Benny Carter Jazz Festival” will take place on the weekend of:February 25, 26, and 27, 2011.It will be in the form of three concerts, eachwith a different emphasis and organization; all related by the repertoire which was entirelycomposed and arranged by Mr. Carter.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2011• BURGER LECTURE | 3 p.m. | Media Center

• CONCERT: JAZZ ENSEMBLE & FACULTY QUINTET | 8 p.m. Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts

The Marywood Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert ofmusic, which Mr. Carter generated for two ensemblesduring the 1960s. The first set is the album of musiccomposed for the great Count Basie and his big bandand entitled “The Legend.” The next set is for a saxophone ensemble and rhythm section and was composed for two albums by Mr. Carter and other saxophone greats such as Phil Woods, ColemanHawkins, and Charlie Rouse. Those albums are entitled“Further Definitions” (1961) and “Additions to FurtherDefinitions,” which featured Bud Shank, Bill Perkins,Teddy Edwards, and Bill Hood. The Marywood saxophone section will take up the challenge of recreating some of those arrangements. In addition tothat repertoire, Marywoood studio professors, includingMr. Tom Heinze (alto sax) and Mr. Dave Jumper (trumpet) will perform some of Mr. Carter's best knownsmall group works.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 26, 2011 The Marywood Jazz Ensemble will share the stage in a“side by side” concert with a selected area high schoolband and perform two joint selections from Mr. Carter'slong and respected list of works for big bands. Theguest ensemble will be chosen by a panel of judges whowill listen to and adjudicate four invited student bands during an afternoon session. Those judges will thenoffer the young musicians some suggestions to improvetheir swing playing and ultimately choose a partnergroup to perform in the evening concert with theMarywood University band. During that program, eachorganization will offer selections of their own choosingand then join together for “Symphony in Riffs”(1929) and“Movin' Uptown” (1996). These two compositions are ofinterest to jazz scholars due to their almost seventyyear difference in copyright dates, although displaying aseries of stylistic similarities and contrasts by the samecomposer. They also provide a perfect platform for thetwo ensembles to collaborate on stage. This combination should be one of the highlights of theweekend's events.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2011The “Benny Carter Jazz Festival” will concludewith the premier performance of a new jazzorganization. The “Northeastern PennsylvaniaRepertory Orchestra” will play an afternoon performance of the music Mr. Carter generatedfor the 1960 album, “The Kansas City Suite” byCount Basie and his big band. The “NPRO” is anensemble of many of the finest jazz musicianswho live and work in the Northeastern cornerof Pennsylvania. Marywood University directorTom Heinze has invited these players to cometogether for the first of many special projectsrecreating the works and styles of the giants inthe field of jazz. Marywood University's hopeis to provide a welcome “home base” where thisorganization will continue to meet as it exploresand performs the repertoire of other legends injazz history. This first performance of the workof Benny Carter will offer the community an exciting opportunity to hear an ensemble thatmany feel will become a mainstay in our area.

The “Benny Carter Jazz Festival” isthe first such event that MarywoodUniversity has dedicated exclusivelyto jazz. The plans call for annualprograms of this nature that willfocus on the careers and contribu-tions of many of the artists whosework was seminal to the evolutionof the great American contributionto twentieth century art...JAZZ!Friday, February 25, 2011 | 8 p.m.
