Our Daily itineraryMON, SEP 1, DAY 1: DEPART THE USA: We depart en route to Milan with complimentary meals and beverages served on the plane. TUE, SEP 2, DAY 2: ARRIVE MILAN: PANORAMIC TOUR & CATHEDRAL: We arrive in Milan and are met by our Catholic Travel Centre representative, who will accompa-ny us throughout our journey.

Milan is the See of Ss. Ambrose and Charles Borromeo and Paul VI. According to legend, when St. Ambrose was an infant in Rome, bees had flown into his mouth, attracted by the honey of his tongue. Ambrose’s famous eloquence as Bish-op (374-97) is given much of the credit for preserving the uni-ty of the Church. His most famous convert was St. Augustine. St. Ambrose left such an imprint on Milan that even today genuine Milanese are called Ambroisani. Boarding our motor coach, we enjoy a panoramic tour of the city. We celebrate the opening Mass of our Pilgrimage at the Cathedral. After Mass, we check-in to our hotel to rest from our journey. Dinner to-night is at our hotel. (D)WED, SEP 3, DAY 3: MILAN: LAST SUPPER / SOTO IL MONTE / PADUA: We begin today with a visit to the church and convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie to see Leonardo Da-Vinci’s masterful mural, The Last Supper (subject to final con-firmation). The site has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Next, we board our motor coach for the Province of Ber-gamo and the town of Soto Il Monte, hometown of Pope John XXIII. We will celebrate Mass at the Church of Santa Maria, a few steps from his home.

After Mass, and a visit of his home, we make our way to the ancient city Padua. The city claims to be Italy’s oldest commune in the north, built on the banks of the Bacchiglione River whose branches at one time surrounded the town. We know Padua for several reasons – one as the setting for much of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and, also, as the final resting place of St. Anthony of Padua, to whom many of us may have prayed over the years for intercession in finding our lost articles. We will visit the Basilica of St. Anthony, built on the site of the Saint’s tomb before checking-in to our hotel for dinner and the evening. (B, D)THU, SEP 4, DAY 4: PADUA: EXCURSION TO VENICE: Today we enjoy an excursion to Venice, known as ‘The Queen of the Adriatic.’ “A unique position, the grace of her buildings, the changing colors, and not least the total absence of wheeled transport, make Venice the most charming and poetic city in the world.” Our visit begins at the Basilica of St. Mark--golden mosaics from the Second Golden Age of Icons adorn this mag-nificent Byzantine basilica built to honor the body of St. Mark brought from Alexandria in Egypt. Popes John XXIII and John Paul I were Patriarchs of Venice. Here we celebrate Mass. We also visit the Piazza di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale (the palace of the Doge, the political leader of the Republic of Ven-ice). We return to Padua for dinner and the evening. (B, D)FRI, SEP 5, DAY 5: PADUA / BOLOGNA / SIENA: This morning, we depart Padua for Siena. We make a stop in Bolo-gna, where we celebrate Mass at the Basilica of San Domenico, founder of the Dominicans. Saint Dominic lies in a magnifi-cent tomb within the Basilica. After Mass, while in Bologna, we enjoy lunch on our own, perhaps to try some of the local specialties. Later, we continue to our accommodations in Siena for dinner and the evening. (B, D) SAT, SEP 6, DAY 6: SIENA: VISIT OF THE TOWN: Today we visit the walled city of Siena. Siena is popularly known for the festival of Il Palio, a twice-annual barebacked horse race around the town’s central square, called the Campo.

In the mid-14th century Siena served as home to the Be-nincasa family, a family of wool-dyers. One of their twenty-five children was named Caterina Benincasa. History remem-bers her as St. Catherine of Siena. Because of her intervention with Pope Gregory XI, the papacy returned to Rome from Provence, France. She, along with St. Teresa of Avila and St. Therese of Lisieux, is one of the few women granted the title of ‘Doctor’ in the Roman Catholic Church. Along with St. Fran-cis, she serves as a co-patron saint of Italy.We begin a visit to the Duomo, originally designed and completed between 1215 and 1263, and we visit the Duomo Museum.

Later, we visit the austere Church of San Domenico—which contains the only authentic portrait of Catherine in the chapel where she received the Dominican habit and where several of her miracles occurred. Here we celebrate Mass. Our tour includes the Sanctuary of St. Catherine, built on the site of her former home. The balance of the day is at leisure to admire the red Piazza del Campo and enjoy some time to wander the Piazza del Mercado. Some of us may wish to visit the Enoteca Nazionale, the national wine museum of Italy, located in the heart of Siena, for a tour and wine tasting. Dinner tonight is on our own. (B)SUN, SEP 7, DAY 7: SIENA / ASSISI: VISIT OF THE SITES OF SS. FRANCIS & CLARE: This morning we depart Siena for the tiny Umbrian town of Assisi, home of St. Francis and St. Clare. We begin our visit at the Basilica of St. Francis for Mass. After Mass we meet our local guide and start the tour of the town. We start with a visit of the tomb of this mendicant saint at the Basilica.

We continue with a walking tour of the city, visiting the major sites associated with St. Francis, including the Chiesa Nuova, built over the home of Francis’ family and the Cathe-dral of San Rufino, with the baptismal font of the Saint. We continue then to the Church of St. Clare, where the saint lies in repose. Here we see the original ‘San Damiano’ crucifix that spoke to Francis, urging him to “rebuild My Church.” Francis interpreted the dream literally and went to work on repairing the building at San Damiano. Only later did he understand the deeper meaning of the dream. We check-in to our hotel for dinner and the evening. (B, D)MON, SEP 8. DAY 8: ASSISI: VISIT, ST. MARY OF THE ANGELS & THE EREMO DELLE CARCERI: Today we con-tinue our visit of the town of Sts. Francis and Clare. The two were lifelong friends, and Clare was one of the first followers of St. Francis. She founded the monastic religious order for women, the Order of Poor Ladies, known today as the Poor Clares, in the Franciscan tradition, and wrote their Rule of Life--the first monastic rule known to have been written by a woman. Clare sought to imitate Francis’ virtues and way of life so much so that she was often called “alter Franciscus,” another Francis. She encouraged and aided Francis throughout his life and took care of him during his illnesses as he lay dying. Clare was canonized in 1255.

We celebrate Mass today at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. The Basilica contains the tiny Porziuncola Chapel, constructed in part by St. Francis. Nearby marks the site where Francis surrendered to ‘Sister Death.’ We then take taxi’s up the winding road (buses cannot make these sharp turns) to the Eremo delle Carceri (Hermitage), secluded some 2 1/2 miles outside the town of Assisi. Here is where St. Francis often re-tired to pray. In the midst of the lush green forest and the sing-ing birds, one gets a deep sense of the spirit of St. Francis. We return to the town below for dinner and the evening at our hotel. (B, D)TUE, SEP 9, DAY 9: ASSISI / CASCIA / ROME: This morn-ing we depart to Cascia, where we visit the Shrine of St. Rita,

one of the most popular of the Italian saints. She was a mar-ried woman, a mother, a widow, a nun, a stigmatist, and later, a mystic. The Basilica of St. Rita contains her incorrupt body, several relics from her life, and a Eucharistic miracle from before her time. Here we celebrate Mass. After Mass and our visit, we continue on to Rome. We enjoy an orientation tour of the city before checking-in to our hotel for dinner and the evening. (B, D)WED, SEP 10, DAY 10: ROME: PAPAL AUDIENCE, IGNA-TIAN SITES: This morning we transfer to the Pope Paul VI Audience Hall for the Papal Audience with His Holiness Pope Francis (subject to Holy Father’s schedule).

After some time at leisure for lunch on our own, we begin this afternoon with a visit to the Rooms of Ignatius. The rooms represent the fifth and final residence of Ignatius in Rome. From his residence in the top floor of the building, Ignatius governed the worldwide Order, and from here he penned his more than 7,000 letters on a wide range of topics.

Here as well Ignatius drew his last breath on July 31, 1556. He is buried in the nearby Church of the Gesú (Church of the Holy Name of Jesus), the Mother Church of the Society of Je-sus. Marking a transition between Renaissance and Baroque styles, the Gesú became a model for Jesuit churches around the world. Here we celebrate Mass.

After Mass, we will visit the Church of San Ignazio. Con-structed in pure Baroque style, the Church was completed a half-century after the Gesú. St. Aloysius Gonzaga and St. John Berchmans are both buried here. Interesting sidebar: as the funds were not available to build a dome on the church, Je-suit Andrea Pozzo cleverly painted a fake dome over the altar, offering the illusion of a real dome. You will have to study it closely to discover that the dome is not real. Dinner this eve-ning is on our own. (B)THU, SEP 11, DAY 11: ROME: CATACOMBS, ST. PAUL’S OUTSIDE THE WALLS, LEISURE & ST. FRANCES OF ROME: This morning, we make our way to the Catacombs of St. Calixtus housing many of the tombs of the early Popes and martyrs. Called by Pope John XXIII, “the sublimest and most famous in Rome”, these underground burial places for 16 popes, a large number of martyrs and a great many Christians, contain an intricate network of passages and chambers hewn from the soft Roman tufa.

Next, we visit the Basilica of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, housing the Tomb of St. Paul the Apostle, affectionately known as the Apostle of the Gentiles. Although heavily restored, the present basilica looks much the same as it did in the 4th cen-tury.

St. Paul was born in Tarsus between 6 and 10 AD. After his conversion he became the church’s foremost evangelizer, especially among the Gentiles. His letters to his followers have greatly influenced church thinking throughout the centuries and continue to do so today. The balance of the day is at lei-sure. Some of us may wish to purchase an optional visit of the Vatican Museums.

Early this evening we will celebrate the final Mass of our pilgrimage at the Church of St. Frances of Rome. St. Frances was a wife, mother, mystic, organizer of charitable services and a Benedictine oblate who founded a religious community of oblates, who share a common life without religious vows. Frances herself remained in her own home, nursing her hus-band for the last seven years of his life from wounds he had received in battle. When he died in 1436, she moved into the monastery and became the group’s president. She died in 1440 and was buried in Santa Maria Nova (now the church of St. Frances.)

In 1925, Pope Pius XI declared her the patron saint of au-tomobile drivers because of a legend that an angel used to light the road before her with a lantern when she traveled, keeping

her safe from hazards. Within the Benedictine Order, she is also honored as a patron saint of all oblates.

Tonight we gather for a special farewell dinner at a local restaurant. (B, D)FRI, SEP 12, DAY 12: RETURN TO THE USA: Breakfast is included today, afterwards we bid farewell to Italy as we trans-fer to the Rome airport to begin our journey home. (B)

Making any payments (cash, credit card or otherwise) towards any tour con-stitutes your unconditional acceptance of all the terms and conditions stated in this tour brochure. Furthermore, while CTC cannot accept responsibility for providing access to all facilities included in a tour, CTC will make every effort to assist in providing mobility aides to the ex-tent feasible and with applicable costs borne by the participant. LIABILITY DISCLAIMER: Catholic Travel Centre (“CTC”) hereby expressly dis-claims any and all liability for any personal injury, property damage, loss of baggage, accident, delay or irregularity, any claim for special or consequen-tial damages or any other loss which may be occasioned by the acts and/or omissions, whether negligent, wrongful or intentional of any air carrier, hotel/motel or other lodging operator, railroad operator, bus operator, pub-lic transportation, sea carrier, local sightseeing company, tour operator, tour leader or spiritual director, any employees thereof, or for any other entity or individual not under the direct supervision and control of CTC when engaged in conveying the passenger or in carrying out the arrangements of the tour, or otherwise in connection therewith. CTC further disclaims any liability for any damages, losses or expenses incurred, or inconvenience caused, due to delay or changes in schedules, defaults, over booking of hotels or airlines, sickness, weather, strikes, quarantines, acts of terrorism, construction, war, force ma-jeure or other such events which are beyond CTC’s & control. CTC likewise disclaims any liability for statements, actions or inactions of any intermedi-ary agents such as group administrators, spiritual directors or tour leaders, travel agents or any other intermediary involved with the selling, promotion or operation of CTC’s tours. Furthermore, to the fullest extent permitted by law, CTC disclaims any liability for any damages or injuries, or other losses whatsoever, sustained or incurred as a result of the negligence of CTC. Group administrators, spiritual leaders and tour leaders likewise expressly disclaim any liability for the acts and/or omissions of any of the above entities and/or individuals not directly under their supervision or control. Please be advised that the liability of carriers as well as providers of hotel and lodging accom-modations is limited by law and you may thus wish to consider purchasing the Passenger Travel Protection Plan and/or additional insurance to protect yourself against any losses or injuries suffered as a result of their acts and/or omissions. In no event shall CTC ‘s liability exceed the amounts paid by you for participation in the tour, and subject to the provisions and cancellation fees as set forth in this Brochure. In the event that the tour leader and/or spiritual director named in a brochure or itinerary does not travel with the group and a substitute is not named therein, CTC reserves the right to make substitutions of its choosing for such person(s). CTC is not responsible for any misquotes contained in this brochure or other accompanying documentations and the contents therein may be changed at any time without notice and at CTC’s sole discretion. POLICY AGAINST DISCRIMINATION: CTC does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition, marital status, sex, age, sexual orientation or status as a Vietnam or other veterans in the provision of its tour and pilgrim-age services.PHOTOGRAPHY: The photos shown in this brochure are intended only as sam-ples of the sites visited by certain tours and unless specifically mentioned in this brochure’s itinerary, no implication is made that these sites will be visited or seen on this tour. CTC reserves the right to take photographs during the operation of any tour and to use such photographs for promotional purposes. Any participant who prefers that their image not be used is asked to notify CTC in writing prior to departure. LEGAL NOTE: The statements herein and the contract between tour par-ticipants and CTC are made and entered into in Los Angeles County, CA. It is hereby agreed and stipulated that any controversy or claim arising out of or relating in any way to these Terms and Conditions, to the brochure, or any other information relating in any way to the trip, or to the trip itself, which cannot be amicably settled, must be litigated either in a state court in and for Los Angeles County, CA, or in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of CA and shall be governed by the laws of the State of California. NOTE: Catholic Travel Centre is a registered Seller of Travel in the State of California: CST#: 2018667 – 40. “Registration as a Seller of Travel does not constitute approval by the State of California.” Section 17550.24(f). Catholic Travel Centre subscribes to the California Travel Consumer Restitution Fund. Non-residents of California are not eligible to make claims to this fund.
