Salad could be grown on Mars, say scientists, after successful-ly sending seeds to space. Re-
searchers sent a million seeds to the International Space Station(ISS)in 2015, in a mission supported by British astronaut Tim Peake. When it came back to Earth after half a year, six lakh childrenacross the UK took part in an experiment to grow the seeds. Sci-entists believe the findings take them a step closer to understand-ing whether edible crops can be grown during space missions.
Scientists have discovereda new species of parasiticfungus on the micro-blog-
ging platform Twitter. The re-searchers spotted an image of amillipede (a group of arthropodscharacterised by two pairs ofjointed legs ) while scrollingthrough the site and noticed afew tiny dots near the creature’shead, something that has neverbeen seen on the millipedes.
WORKOUT AT HOME
Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, began atwo-day virtual teaching on Saturday, on tackling neg-
ative emotions of fear and anxiety, precipitated by the globalhealth crisis. Drawing from the teachings of Buddhist schol-ar, Nagarjuna’s, 'Precious Garland', he said the analytical andscientific approach of the Nalanda tradition, forming the basefor Tibetan Buddhism, is precise in the study of the workingsof human mind. He compared human mind to quantum physicsthat makes a distinction between appearance and reality.
As the world continues tobattle the coronaviruspandemic, actor Shah
Rukh Khan penned down the lifelessons learnt from this period. In a post on his Twitter handle, the 'Fan' star wrote about how we“have been living far beyond ourexigencies, most of which don'treally matter as much as wethought they did.” In the heart-warming post, the 54-year-old said,“That we really don't need (emo-tionally) more people around usthan the ones we feel like talkingto while we are locked up.”

Talking can generate Covid-19droplets that linger up to 14 minutes
Coughs or sneezes may not be the only way peopletransmit infectious pathogens, like the novel coron-avirus to one another. Talking can also launch thousands
of droplets so small that they can remain suspended in the airfor eight to 14 minutes, according to a new study published inthe 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences'.
This research could help explain how people with mild orno symptoms may infect others in close quarters, such as of-fices, nursing homes, cruise ships and other confined spaces.
WHAT THE STUDY FOUND Elaborate experiments haverevealed how coughing or sneez-ing can produce a crackling burstof air mixed with saliva or mucusthat can force hundreds of mil-lions of influenza and other virusparticles into the air, if a personis sick. A single cough can propel about 3,000 respiratorydroplets; sneezing can generate as many as 40,000 The scientists also found that while droplets start shrinkingfrom dehydration as soon as they leave a person’s mouth, they can still float in the air for eight to 14 minutes.

negative emotions amid pandemic
Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, two of the most success-ful people in the modern age, often make time to just sitand let their minds wander. Rather than finding endlessways to distract yourself, it is better to learn how tolean in to the boredom, and turn those feelings of frus-tration into something much calmer and more accepting. This is especially relevant in lockdown time, when mostpeople are dealing with loneliness and boredom.“Boredom is an important state of mind. The ability tocope with it is important, so that we can deal with thereal feelings that are emerging from within us,“ states
Dr Shyam Bhat, mental health expert. It also gives usthe opportunity to have creative thought. This pandemicis, therefore, a good time for us to cultivate the abilityto be with ourselves a bit more, to learn how to enjoyour solitude, and use strategies to stay connected withthe many interesting aspects of the present moment,”he suggests.
