Transformation

As part of Atlanta Public Schools high school transfor-mation program, the 340,000 square-foot Benjamin E. Mays High School has been completely renovated to house four new career-based academies.

As illustrated in the accompanying photos of the facil-ity, the existing spaces before the renovation/expansion were extremely dark, disorienting, and uninviting. Our challenge was to open up the school, give it a sense of order, and provide natural light in all the learning spaces.

With the gym and auditorium remaining in place, the major classroom areas were demolished down to their structure and exterior skin. The central core of the school was completely demolished and replaced with the construction of a new two story media center, a new two story cafeteria, and new science rooms. The new media center and new cafeteria front on renovatedinterior courtyards which let natural light penetrate deep into these spaces.

Additionally, the existing entry lobby was completely demolished to build a bright, new transparent entry to the school. The roof of the new construction is raised

. above the existing roof providing clerestory windows that further transform the interior of the school into a bright, day-lighted space. Along with the advantages of natural light on learning, the electrical costs are greatly reduced by the diminished need for artificial lighting.

To give the school a new facade, the main entry has been relocated. Everyone now enters the school through a glass-enclosed atrium between the athletic/arts com-plex and the academic building. This new entry allows the academic wings to be closed after hours while the gym and/or theater are in use. New canopies, land-scape, and seating areas outside lead to this new main entrance.

Benjamin E. Mays High School demonstrates how a aged, worn school building can be transformed into a modern learning facility that the community, teachers, and students can be proud of. Mays is an example of how adapting and renovating the existing school can be as effective as completely demolishing and building a new building. This facility is transformational for the Mays community and has been accomplished at a much lower financial and environmental cost than building a whole new school.
