Businesses of all sizes should not be put off using the cloud because they are worried about spying and data security, a European Commission document has insisted.

The organisation said it appreciated that recent headlines about different countries spying on each other could have fostered a negative atmosphere towards putting potentially sensitive information into storage.

However, it insisted that a "Fortress Europe" approach will not work and that the benefits far outweigh the risks. It also insisted that using the cloud is the only way for Europe to achieve the greatest economic potential.

"The cloud puts the best IT solutions within the reach of small firms and organisations. These small firms are the bedrock of the European economy and the cloud will enable a particularly big leap forward for productivity in Europe if firms can be convinced to use it," the report said.

Europe already has very high standards for data protection, so the EC insisted that theft and loss should be very unlikely, as long as security measures are used carefully.

If the barriers to free data flow around the EU are cut back as a result of cloud computing, this "would be a massive boost to competitiveness", the document concluded.

Past research has indeed found that some businesses are being put off cloud computing because they fear they do not have adequate security skills with which to manage it.

Quocirca discovered that out of firms that had a negative attitude towards the phenomenon, nearly two-thirds assumed they did not have the expertise and 72 per cent were worried about a lack of security resources.

Spokesperson Bob Tarzey suggested that using an outside organisation to manage the cloud could be the easiest way to ease these worries and reap the benefits the technology can offer.
