HSPA benefits
WCDMA downlink evolution HSDPAHigh Speed Downlink Packet Access,
is part of 3GPP/UTRAN-FDD Release 5 WCDMA specifications. HSDPAdelivers a similar boost for WCDMA as EDGE does for GSM/GPRS. HSDPAboosts the air interface capacity by 2 times and delivers a 5-fold increase indata speeds in the downlink direction. HSDPA also shortens round-trip time
between network and terminals and reduces variance in downlinktransmission delay.
WCDMA enhanced uplink - HSUPA, is being standardized as part of 3GPPRelease 6 and will follow into the market.

HSDPA markets
All WCDMA operators are expected to evolve to HSDPA as the new baseline for
mobile wireless broadband globally
50 operators have confirmed interest and considering, planning, deploying or
triallingHSDPA - in APAC this includes Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan,Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan
Commercial launches:
Cingular Wireless (October 18, 2005)
Manx Telecom (November 1, 2005)

EDGE Evolution
EDGE Evolution - potential benefits:
2 3 times increase in EDGE bit rates
2 3 times spectral efficiency gain (for voice & data capacity)
Halve the latency (roundtrip time)
All achieved with low impact on the GSM/EDGE network
Operators say EDGE-WCDMA/HSPA service continuity is very important
WCDMA evolution to HSDPA a key driver for EDGE EvolutionReducing the performance gap is the priority
