    Annual Report 2013

  • July 2013

Dear Supporters of Holy Wisdom Monastery:

2013 was a momentous year for the growth of the community of communities at Holy Wisdom Monastery. We saw our inaugural group of Benedictine Sojourners go out into the world with new experiences of Benedictine values and community life. We welcomed fi ve more sojourners throughout the year. Th e sojourners contributed a great deal of depth to our community and prayer life, as well as helping to get work done at the monastery. Th e sojourners led the Advent Day of Refl ection after only being here for a few months, which drew 60 participants. It has been a true blessing to establish this new form of community life. For quotes from Benedictine Sojourners, please see pages 4-5.

Our oblate and Sunday Assembly communities continued to grow. In April 2013, we welcomed 10 oblates to the community after they experienced a year of oblate candidacy learning about the Rule of Benedict. An additional 14 candidates joined us in 2013 to experience the Rule of Benedict through retreats, spiritual guidance and community. Th e oblate community continues to thrive with the help of so many volunteers from within the community. In 2013, 41 oblates contributed over 1,600 hours to help support the work of the monastery.

We welcomed 73 new members to our Sunday Assembly community in 2013, including 18 children. By the end of 2013, we had 443 registered members of Sunday Assembly. Th e desire for an ecumenical worshipping community with values like simplicity, beauty, and social justice continues to come alive. In 2013, we were able to address some of the needs of the growth of the children in the Sunday Assembly community by revamping and reinvigorating the Children’s Ministry program. For more on Children’s Ministry, please see page 3.

Th e Wisdom Prairie Project also built momentum in 2013. Th e sisters were pleased to take a leap of faith in living out the caring for the earth portion of their mission by acquiring 53 acres of adjacent farmland with the help of a $1 million lead gift from an anonymous donor.

Th e 53 acre parcel was on the market beginning in 2011 as part of an estate sale. Th ere were other buyers interested in the property, which could have led to the urban development of 50 single-acre homes. Th e sisters had a diff erent vision for this parcel: open space for guests to enjoy and restored prairie to reduce the runoff of pollutants (especially phosphorous) into the Lake Mendota watershed across the street. Th e sisters are also partnering with Dane County to construct a bike trail on the north side of Lake Mendota, with hopes of connecting Governor Nelson State Park to the trails on the Pheasant Branch Nature Conservancy in Middleton. Th is parcel was the ‘missing link’ from having this happen.

About 100 donors contributed over $240,000 toward the Wisdom Prairie Project in 2013. As of the publication of this report in July 2014, we have just over $200,000 to go toward the $1.9 million goal! Th ank you to all of our supporters.

Th ank you to all for your support in our vision and belief in our mission. I invite you to visit the monastery for prayer, a retreat, a tour or a walk on the grounds sometime in the near future.

    Sincerely,

    Mary David Walgenbach, OSB

  • Report by Tom Zanzig

In one of the most exciting developments of the year, Holy Wisdom witnessed the birth of a new approach to Children’s Ministry. Guided by Sunday Assembly member Tom Zanzig and Barbara Dannhausen, OP, the new approach began with a thoughtful, prayerful six-month discernment and planning process. Out of that process emerged a challenging question that proved to be transformative:

As a monastic, contemplative community (that is, not a conventional parish or congregation), who and what are we uniquely called to be, and how might that be refl ected in the initiation and formation of our children?

As representative members of our community pondered that provocative question, another series of “what if ” questions arose. Questions like, what if . . .

    • . . . we viewed our communal life as “an ecumenical monastic community in the Benedictine tradition” as the primary “curriculum,” as the source and foundation of our goals, direction, learning objectives, and methodologies? • . . . we used the monastery’s mission statement, vision, core values, and spiritual practices as our “curriculum guide” for charting a path forward? • . . . we used all of our interactions with children as opportunities to introduce and nurture skills in the core spiritual practices of monastic life and discipleship?

As the project team pondered such questions, they agreed on this basic planning principle:

In our eff orts to renew Children’s Ministry, we will take very seriously and strive to share with our children the unique nature and mission of Holy Wisdom Monastery. We will invite them to join us in “weaving prayer, hospitality, justice and care for the earth into a shared way of life as an ecumenical, Benedictine community.”

Ultimately, the goal of Children’s Ministry is not just to off er our children a nice religion program, as valuable as that may be. Rather, we want to be for them and their families a loving, faith-fi lled community of companions on the lifelong journey of spiritual transformation. We invite and challenge all members of Holy Wisdom Monastery to help make that dream a reality. During the fi rst year of the revitalized Children’s Ministry program, we were blessed with fi ve volunteer teachers who facilitated innovative Sunday Assembly sessions for 28 children from a dozen families.

For more information about the children’s program for 2014-2015, see the fl yer available in the brochure rack as you enter the monastery or contact Barbara Dannhausen, OP at [email protected] or Tom Zanzig at [email protected], 608-233-3288.

Children and adults gather for an intergenerational event on monastism and belonging to Holy Wisdom Monastery which emerged from the Children’s Ministry planning in 2013, February 2014.

  • Quot es by Sojourners

Prayer is at the heart of Benedictine life at Holy Wisdom Monastery. Sojourners and guests join the sisters for daily prayer, November 2013.

Trish – on learning Benedictine balance:

What the framework of the Liturgy of the Hours does for me is ground me in who I am as beloved of God and in my purpose to seek God—day after day. No matter what I do in particular.…One morning I am refl ecting with the sisters on spiritual writer Esther de Waal’s description of our baptismal vows to put on Christ, and within the hour I am pulling at stubborn dandelion roots in the asparagus garden. Another day l am singing about the Great Artist of the Universe, and later I’m taking food scraps to the compost bin.

Linda – on accepting the invitation:

If spirituality is important to you and you need community to help make that a greater reality, if God opens the doors, come.

    Nancy – on being contemplative:

It’s not just a beautiful place where quiet, contemplative introspection is available, but it’s encouraged, it’s supported. So that growth is exponentially more than I expected.

    4

  • Vicki – on Sunday Ass embly:

Each time we gather for Sunday Assembly, I am fi lled with a sense of awe from within the community that moves beyond the simplicity of my faith alone and into the paschal mystery that fi rst calls any of us to baptism and the witness of the Gospel message to all through our lives.

Rosy – a city girl experiencing harvest time:

Fall is the season of harvest. But being from New York City, I can forget that food doesn’t grow in the produce aisle of the grocery store! Detached from the slow work of the seasons, I have been surprised by the fl urry of activity that must take place as fruits and vegetables ripen in the monastery gardens and seeds fall from the blossoms of the surrounding prairies.…I’ve had a frontline view of all the work that goes on here during harvest season.

Brenda – on Sunday Ass embly:

Worshiping with the Sunday Assembly at Holy Wisdom Monastery has been a delight in many ways. Th e liturgy is rich, refl ecting a variety of Christian traditions. Th e people are welcoming, coming from many traditions and experiences. But I think what I appreciate most of all is the fact that it is an assembly of believers. Th e earliest way which the believers referred to themselves was ekklesia (a called-out assembly). I like being connected with these earliest believers by the very way in which we name ourselves, and by the way we welcome all who are called out to assemble.

Sarah – on the Benedictine Sojourner experience:

Th is is a place that I love, a place that was gifted to me through God’s grace. Benedictine Sojourners is a program that can bless others and I want to share that!

  • We honor those who have chosen to share their generosity for 10 or more consecutive years with automatic induction into the Scholastica Sustainers community. Scholastica Sustainers are long-term supporters who believe in and are energized by our mission.

Saint Scholastica, the twin sister of Saint Benedict of Nursia, was a dedicated supporter of the ministries of her brother. Th e story goes that Benedict was visiting his sister and he wanted to return home to the monastery he founded. Scholastica pleaded with him to spend the night to allow more time for conversation and prayer together, and he refused. She then prayed to God for rain to keep him there and a wicked storm came. Scholastica died three days later. Scholastica is remembered for never waivering in support for her brother.

As Scholastica was to Benedict, the Scholastica Sustainers are to Holy Wisdom Monastery; they stand by our side. Many live nearby our location in Middleton, Wisconsin, but some live as far away as Indiana, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
