1. Describe how a person is brought to salvation according to Benedict.

We obtain salvation through his method of poverty, chastity, obedience and stability. Benedictine, to prevent monks from leaving the monastery, set up a trial period to see if future monks were built for monastery life, and this added stability. The importance of prayer was to make sure work was not becoming an idol, so that helped balance out the monk’s lives. All of these need the monks to have open hearts and love to fully accept and live out God’s intended way for us.

2. Describe, with several details, the role of the abbot. In what ways are his responsibilities so great that it might not be the job everybody would want?

The abbot is supposed to hold the place of Christ in the monastery and acts like an authority figure to the other monks, and he should never turn the others away from God by teaching anything contrary to the Law. One might not want it, because the abbot is responsible for both his teaching and all of his disciples, however, if the abbot is doing a good job and it is the disciple who is unruly, the disciple gets punished. The abbot must instruct by teaching and also by his actions, he must do everything he says. Overall, the abbot must value his disciples and call to God for his answers.

3. Give an explanation as to why obedience is so important in the monastic life. Do so with several examples from the reading.

The abbot is seen as the authoritative figure, and his disciples are supposed to take each command as if it were by God, and this is the first degree of humility because they are giving up what they want to do for others. Disciples are supposed to give up their work when they receive an order and then through the fear of good, finish it quickly because of the desire to have eternal life. Disciples are not supposed to live to their own desires and pleasures, but to the will of others and they want the abbot to be their authoritative figure. However, the task requested must be done with out grumblings otherwise the disciple will not truly mean the action.
