Transcript of Bending BWS primer
Learning to Bend wire
Purpose: To give you the skills and confidence
to make and use the Farrell Bent Wire
System
1) Unbend a paper clip...by hand
Unbend clip by plier
•Walk the plier around the curve to get a straight line
Extra-credit....re-bend the clip
(If you can do this, you’ll have all the plier skills you’ll need...)
Small Bends•Bend around the Round Beak•90o bend
Round Beak
Square Beak
Small Bends•Keep the second bend “on plane” (flat on the paper)
Small Bends•Do three more 90o bends, all on plane
Medium Bends•Use the second step of the loop forming plier, or the middle of the bird beak plier•180o bend, this time
Large Bends•Use the thickest part of the loop forming plier or the bottom of the bird beak•Alternate: Small 90o, Large 180o
Bend an Arch Form•Hollow Chop•“Spin” it
BWS loop•How many bends does this loop have?•What size are the bends?
Answer: Four
Small(90)Small(90) Medium(180)Large (180)
BWS Loop1)Make a small bend to 90 degrees 2)Make a Large bend 180 degrees. Keep the wire flat. 3)Make a small bend 90 degrees. Still flat.4)Make a Medium bend 180 degrees. 5)Voila! Your first BWS loop.
Supply Tray
Model (with
Bands)
Pencil, Marker Bird Beak
Heavy Wire Cutter
.028 SS wire
Using a Template•Creating a flat paper template•Good for learning•Easier to use than the model
Visualize the contact points
Mark points of contact
Mark loop locations
Put marked model on the photocopier
Cover with cloth or paper towel
Photocopy
Connect the lines
Keep the model nearby for reference
Start in the midline
Follow the lines...
...keeping the wire flat.
A little overbent, so...
...so correct it.
Follow along the line
Perfect all around
Take it to the model
Bending an “Ideal” BWS
•Not adapted to the rotations•Has an “ideal” (smooth) arch form
Mark points of contact
Mark loop locations
Visualize the contact points
“Spin” the wire and adjust to the the contact points
From the side
Done
Bending an“Adapted” BWS
•Follows the contours of the rotated teeth•Contacts surfaces
Mark the model where you want contact
Start bending from the midline, work right, then left
Make sure it lies passively
Go to the other side
Bending the Loop
Locate point for Loops
Mark the wire
Pick up next to the mark...
...round beak toward bend
Set the angle of the loop Plane of the
BWS (occlusion)
Plane of the bend: always perp to plier Upper = 25o
Lower = 10o
Bend around the round beak
The first bend: small 90
Ready for the second bend
2nd Bend: large 180
The Second Bend
Next: Small 90
Third bend
Next: Small 180
The Fourth Bend
the Fourth Bend
Adjust loop and distal leg
Adjusting the Legs: Horizontal plane
Adjust Angle of Loop
Gingival Gingival ImpingementImpingement
Adjust angle of loop
Adjust the Legs: Vertical plane
Loop’s too high
Now tipped down
Good
Cut off extra
One last case...
Adapted BWS
Make your marks
From above...
... the photocopy
Start your bends and adjust
...work around...
...set aside for try-in.
