Garbage Disposal DistrictsA Garbage Disposal District (GDD) is an area within unincorporated Los Angeles County where an allocated level of recycling, waste and green waste collection and other services are provided to residents and businesses by a private waste hauler that contracts with Los Angeles County. All property owners in a GDD are enrolled for services and assessed on their annual property tax bill.Contracted Waste HaulerIn your GDD, Consolidated Disposal Service, a Republic Services company, is the contracted waste hauler. Los Angeles County Public Works, Environmental Programs Division, manages the contract. Allocated Level and Cost of ServiceThe service level and the amount charged are based on the land use codes assigned to the property by the Los Angeles County Office of the Assessor. See the table accompanying this article for a list of property types and the allocated trash service. Assigned Land UsesThe Assessor assigns each property a land use code. The use code is available on the Assessor’s website:portal.assessor.lacounty.gov. Each property will have only one use code. If the use code appears to be incorrect, you may contact Public Works which will assist you in contacting the Assessor to verify the use code.Houses/Apartments/Condominiums

• Every single-family home and each unit of a multi-family apartment or condominium is entitled to 0.5 cubic yards (approximately 100 gallons) of collection service, once a week, consisting of one recycling, one waste and one green waste cart. Additional carts are available for free or at a small, one-time charge.

• Multi-family property owners may choose between one set of plastic carts for each unit or larger metal dumpsters in equivalent capacity (limited to available sizes).

• Multi-family buildings with five or more units are entitled to receive collection twice a week.

Businesses• Businesses may use metal dumpsters or sets of

96-gallon carts in equivalent capacity (limited to available sizes).

• Additional waste containers beyond the allotted specified service may be requested but must be paid for directly to the waste hauler.

• Businesses receive collection service once a week except:• Properties with 2.5 cubic yards or more of service are

entitled to receive collection service twice a week.• Properties classified by the Assessor as commercial

food establishments are entitled to daily collection service of waste, excluding Sundays and holidays.

• If there are multiple businesses on one property, the specific business type may be different from the assigned property land use code (i.e., a restaurant in a shopping center) and the property owner/property management company should contact Public Works to verify the allocated level of trash service.

• If additional collection service (larger capacity or increased frequency) is needed, please contact our Customer Service Department at (800) 299-4898. Please be aware that there will be a monthly service charge for additional service beyond the allocated service assessment paid for on the property tax bill.

In a Garbage Disposal District, specific recycling and waste services are paid for through real property taxes. GDD offers many services, including the collection of:

Remove Doors From Large AppliancesIt is illegal to leave doors attached to large appliances that are set in the public right of way for collection. Under California law (Penal Code Section 402b), leaving doors on refrigerators, washers, dryers and other appliances with a capacity of 1.5 cubic feet or more is a criminal offense. While these large appliances may not seem to pose much of a danger, they could appear to be a perfect hiding spot, creating a substantial risk for children and others who attempt to enter one and then get trapped inside and suffocate. Please remember to remove all doors prior to setting large appliances out for bulky item collection. For more information, please call Customer Service at (800) 299-4898.

Under AB 341, businesses and properties must recycle paper, boxes, cans, bottles and containers, as well as items that are unique to their operations.OrganicsUnder Assembly Bill 1826, California businesses are required to reduce the amount of organics sent to landfills.
