Mr Nick Garrett Head of Primary International Day: What a fantastic afternoon my first International Day at Belvedere British School was and what an amazing display of countries’ cultures, food, dance and music. Thank you so much to all the parents and BBS staff for putting this altogether, as it was a huge feat of organization. I had a very interesting and enjoyable time learning about all the different countries represented and sampling all the different food and drinks. All the BBS children taking part had wonderful national dress and it was very clear you had put a great deal of effort into proudly representing your country. Thank you. I do hope everyone enjoyed sharing their culture and also learnt from each other as it is extremely important that we all live and work together.

Welsh Day for Year 5 next week: Still on an international theme, I would like to remind Year 5 parents that the first of Year 5’s UK days is next week. Welsh Day is on Tuesday, 1st March and Year 5 pupils have been asked to wear red clothing for this day. I know how excited Mr Llewellyn is to teach the children all about his country in the UK and I am sure Year 5 pupils will have a very interesting day. Please will Year 5 parents also be aware of the dates for the other UK days: March 9th English Day, March 17th Irish Day, March 23rd Scottish Day.

Royal Spelling Bee Competition: The second round of the Royal Spelling Bee Competition took place last Saturday, 20th February and several of our BBS pupils took part. I know that all the BBS participants worked extremely hard at learning their spellings and I would like to congratulate all of you for doing so well. I under-stand that the scores were very close in some parts of the competition. I am delighted to announce that three of our pupils won places in their particular groups: Aashritha Karthik Kumar came 2nd in her group, Habiba Ahmed El Sherif came 3rd in her group, and Umar Ahmed came 4th in his group. This is fantastic so well done to all of you. You should be very proud of what you have achieved.

Sports week: Thank you to Mr Ryan Baker, Mr Phil Davies and Miss Hannah Cummings for running such a great week of Sports Days for all the year groups in Belvedere British School, helped by their Secondary pupils. The school was alive with the sound of music, cheers and Hakka’s, and it was wonderful to see how much effort the children were putting into their events and supporting each other. There was much competition for the Tug of War! There will be more on this week’s sports events in next week’s newsletter, but there are a few reports in this edition.

Book Fair: I was very pleased to see so many of the pupils buying books and reading them in the Book Fair that Mrs Kirsty Baker kindly organized for the school this week. As parents are aware, we place a great deal of importance on reading at BBS and getting the pupils to improve and enjoy the books they have from the library. I would love to see more Book Reviews that we can publish in the newsletter to inspire and encourage other children to read more.

Dog Handling: On Wednesday, we were very lucky to have some furry visitors to BBS in the form of specially trained police dogs. Their police handlers worked with the dogs to demonstrate some of the training and the children were fascinated to see all the skills and tricks the dogs had learnt. I know that there were some children watching who were very nervous about the dogs and I would particularly like to say ‘well done’ to those children who were very brave and wanted to overcome their fear and joined in with an activity with the dogs and their handlers. A very big thank you to Miss Shaima who organized these demonstrations for the whole school.

Reminder—Use Accelerated Reader at Home!

Just in case parents missed this in last week’s edition, students are now able to access Accelerated Reader at home! Students are able to read and quiz using their android/ laptop or mobile! Simply follow the steps below: Log in to the Accelerated Reader website or download the APP. https://ukhosted42.renlearn.co.uk/3377066/public/rpm/login/Login.aspx?srcID=t Students should set the URL as BBS-37NC This will take students to the Belvedere home page where students should type in their username (all students have these written in their homework planners or English books) and their password which is ABC. Students will then be able to access quizzes and their bookshelves (showing which books have been read and percentage scores). Please take a few minutes to look at your child's AR record. We have had Secondary students this week re-test and in three months they have improved their reading age by TWO years!!! Here at Belvedere we are committed to improving literacy levels. When students read we see improvements in all subjects. Please encourage reading and track progress using the app. Thank you for your ongoing support; please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Kirsty Baker (Director of English, AR coordinator, AVP)

FIT FOR LIFE with Year 1 Last week, we were talking about healthy eating. We know that it's ok to eat treats sometimes, but we must remember that it's important to eat healthy food too. In Golden Time, 1C made treat kebabs with marshmal-lows and strawberries! Yum!

9

FIT FOR LIFE WITH BBS It’s not only our young pupils who are keeping fit and making sure they are healthy. There is no stopping the BBS staff when it comes to health, fitness and fun. You may recognize the faces here: a teacher, a principal and Board of Governors’ member who were all involved in the Abu Dhabi Netball league Tuesday night competition.

We will release the ORIGINAL MEASLES VACCINATION CARD today to all students who received the vaccine on February 14-15, 2016. Please check your child’s school bag for this. Thank you.

10

Year 1 We have enjoyed learning about materials this week. We sorted objects into different groups identifying which material they were made from.

11

Year 3 loved watching the police dog show!

‘Today was great! Some policemen came to do an amazing show. It was scary but so

cool! There was a group of three big dogs and three baby puppies, who were so cute!’

By Shouq Al Eisaei, Class 3A.

‘I loved the dogs and the police. My favourite part was when the dog jumped in the

hoop!’ By Emma Al Jumeily, Class 3A.

Mr Simon Tarr Head of Secondary

Dear Parents,

I need to say thank you to a lot of people this week. It has been a busy seven days and a really productive and

enjoyable week.

International Day. A big thank you from me to all of the secondary students who contributed to a fantastic

International day. Many of our secondary students were involved with the setting up as well as helping on the

day, and some of the more adventurous ones contributed to the performances as well. A special thank you goes

to Malak Dawood, Ana Perez Del Omo, Ali Alhammadi and Saif Abdul Nahbil who acted as MCs during the

performance and to Mahmoud Hussayan, Taher Alkhateeb, Mohaamed Elnemer, Mohammed Al Bayed, Karam

Yosef and Mahmoud Hiritani who performed the Dabke, a traditional Arabic dance. Thanks to every family who

contributed to the performances and the stalls of the global village – it all made my first BBS International Day a

real day to remember.

Book Fair. Thank you to Mrs. Baker for another great book fair. Mrs. Baker, the English department and all of the

secondary students are making literacy and reading a real key part of our school ethos. Be a Reader is now the

message at our school. Thank you to all of the students who kindly donated a book this week – this has really

boosted the variety of reading material available to all of our students. A special thanks to Ali Alhammadi who

brought in two huge bags of new books for the school – we extend our thanks to Ali and his family for this

extremely generous gesture. All of these efforts are not only increasing the amount of enjoyment available from

reading great books, but have also produced very encouraging results from the first Accelerated Reader tests.

Sports Day. A huge thank you from me and from all of the students goes to Mr. Baker, Mr. Davies and Miss

Cummings of our fantastic PE department for putting on a brilliant Sports Week. Our Secondary students had a

great time participating and I am especially proud of our Student Competency Leaders who have helped our PE

staff every day in the organization and smooth running of all the events.

Options Evening. Thanks you to all the parents, students and families who attended the Options Evening.

Choosing a student’s GCSE route is an important event and I would urge everyone involved to ask lots of

questions and use this coming week to make sure they are well informed about their choices.

Resources. Please find contained in this week’s newsletter a list of recommended resources that will support your

child’s studies in secondary school.

Thanks to everyone for their hard work this week and thanks to all our students and their families for their

continuing support.

KEY STAGE 3

Dear Parent,

We have listened extensively to the needs and concerns of our students and their parents. It is clear that we

need to support the families who want to support our teachers with the curriculum. As you are all aware, we

provide a dynamic and creative curriculum that goes beyond the confines of a single textbook. In line with the

ADEC vision we endeavour to provide learning experiences that go beyond a single source and encourage our

young people to think creatively about their subjects. Our teachers carefully produce resources and plan their

lessons that not only provide the students with a secure knowledge of the required skills and understanding, but

also encourage them to become independent learners and innovators. We are already seeing the benefits as

more and more of our students take control of their own learning and become self-directed and reflective young

people. We have already supplied all of our parents via email with the long term and medium term syllabus plans

of each of our subjects. We provide students with regular homework in all subjects and are currently preparing

study packs for use during extended holidays and summer breaks. To further support our students we have

compiled a list of textbooks that complement our programmes of study. It is not compulsory that you buy these

books. No child will be disadvantaged by not having these books – it is instead as a response to the many

parents who want to support their child in extra study at home and to help consolidate the knowledge their child

is acquiring each day at Belvedere British School.
