Upper BelvedereThe Upper Belvedere was built for pomp and ceremony, as the magnificent Marble Hall and the sumptuous Palace Chapel still reflect to this day. The palace’s staterooms have seen many festivities in the past. The Marble Hall, with its unrivalled view over Vienna, also went down in history as the Austrian State Treaty was signed here on May 15, 1955. Today, the Upper Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its glittering highlights include Gustav Klimt’s golden pictures, the Kiss and Judith I, as well as masterpieces by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.
MARBLE HALL
The Marble Hall, with its ceiling fresco by Carlo Carlone glorifying the House of Savoy, is the most magnificent room in the Upper Belvedere. From its balcony you can appreciate the iconic view of Vienna, captured by Canaletto in his famous painting.

Lower Belvedere 21er HausAt the Lower Belvedere you can marvel at the splendor of Prince Eugene’s former living quarters and ceremonial rooms. Its staterooms, such as the Hall of Grotesques, Mar-ble Gallery, and Gold Cabinet, provide a fascinating glimpse of art and life in the Baroque age. Top temporary exhibitions are also shown at the Lower Belvedere and the Orangery.
MARBLE GALLERY
The sumptuous Marble Gallery, adorned with mirrors and sculptures by Domenico Parodi, once housed Prince Eugene’s antiquities, known as the “Herculaneum Women.” This hall is flanked by two further staterooms: the Gold Cabinet and the Hall of Grotesques.

HALL OF GROTESQUES
The Hall of Grotesques follows the tradition of grotesque decora-tion that dates back to antiquity and was revived in the Renais-sance by artists like Raphael. It was adorned by Jonas Drentwett from Augsburg, who was a specialist in this style of decor.

GOLd CABInET
The Gold Cabinet was probably first used as Prince Eugene’s private bedchamber. It is a superb example of the vogue for “mirror rooms” with East Asian decor.

Designed by Karl Schwanzer as Austria’s Pavilion for the Brussels World Expo in 1958, the building was converted into a museum of twentieth-century art in Vienna and ope-ned in 1962. This redeveloped architectural gem has now been given a new profile by the Belvedere. With its light, clearly structured spaces for exhibitions and events, and a cinema, it meets all the requirements of current, inter-disciplinary museum work. The new museum also houses the Wotruba Foundation’s permanent collection and the government’s Artothek (contemporary art collection).
