In the new volume of the successful natural book series, seal, crab and seagull show how they live and what exciting things are to be discovered in the ocean and at the beach.

Which fi sh has red spots? What do shrimps look like? And which plants grow on the ocean fl oor? Easy texts and bold illustrations help children learn more about life in the ocean. Katrin Wiehle uses distinct shapes, subdued colours and simply lovable characters to playfully arouse the interest in sealife of even the youngest.

»Printed on recycled fi berboard with natural pigments, this children’s book is pleasantly diffe-rent from other common products of this market segment and sets a distinguishing mark with the materials used.« Stiftung Buchkunst on Mein kleiner Wald/My Little Forest, the most beautiful German book 2013

Sometimes you get so mad that you don’t know how to get out of things again. A picture book about a strong emotion, by two great picture book artists.

When Lisa gets angry, her shadow gets very long and she could tie knots in every tree or would love to send everyone packing. Lisa stomps her feet, pounds her fi sts and growls. And then she screams until her anger bursts. Using empathy and humor, Janisch and Olten gently show children how to fi nd the way out of the maze of negative feelings and anger.

Bear wants to celebrate his birthday and has invited his friends. Will they all come? Isabel Pin charmingly writes about the feelings and small worries of the youngest.

Birthdays are exciting! Especially when there is a celebration. Will all of Bear’s friends come to his party? They all have lots to do … Squirrel is busy gathering nuts all day long. And Fox is on the road a lot. »Oh dear!« Bear thinks. Will he have to celebrate his birthday alone? Luckily his worries disappear when in the end, all his friends come to celebrate with him!

It all starts early in the morning. This tour through the neighborhood gives children insight to the busy lives of six various families – and of a cat family, too!

Doro Göbel and Peter Knorr present many loving details on seven double-pages of the busy lives of six families in their apartment house. The Meiers are about to have a baby, the Popow family starts the day with an argument and a big celebration is being held at the Yilmaz household. Emma and Martin have a Papa and a Papi, and the hair stylist Luise makes an excellent team together with her daughter. Young and old share an apartment – and in the middle of the seek-and-fi nd neighbor-hood, Alfred is camping in his construction trailer.

Doro Göbel, born in 1958, and Peter Knorr, born in 1956, live as freelance illustrators in Nierstein on the Rhine. Both illustrate children’s books and design book covers. Their seek-and-find series that appeared with Beltz & Gelberg was done in teamwork.

Katja Gehrmann, born in 1968, studied in Mexico, Spain and design/illustration at the HAW Hamburg. She lives in Hamburg together with her family. She has published many picture books, the most recent to be published with Beltz & Gelberg was Für immer/Forever (text by Kai Lüftner).

The truly adventurous journey of a sloth that travels halfway around the world because it is not willing to ever part from its tree. Not even when the tree has long been made into a chair. With magnificent illustrations by Katja Gehrmann.

In a jungle in a faraway country, the sloth hangs on, for a sloth never leaves its tree. Not even when the tree has been chopped down. The tree travels across the ocean, arrives at a saw mill and is made into a chair – which the sloth is hanging upside down on. It would never leave its tree, no matter what. Only Paul realizes that it is not possible to go on this way and sticks it, together with the chair, into a box with the follow-ing label: »Please return to jungle!«

Philip Waechter, born in 1968, studied communication design in Mainz and lives and works as an illustrator in Frankfurt am Main. He is a member of the artist studio Labor, which produces the KINDER KÜNST-LER books (most recently the Kinder Künstler Kritzelkinos, see page 11). All of his picture books, most recently Kuchen bei mir/Cake at My Place appeared with Beltz & Gelberg.

Philip Waechter writes for all camping fans why camping is the greatest and it turns out to be an unforgettable summer in every respect. Or for those who want to become fans, which shouldn’t be a problem with such a charming picture book!

Camping vacationers face many challenges and pitfalls each year, whether it be setting up the tent, putting up with unpleasant neighbours or swarms of mosquitos. Nevertheless, this young boy thinks camping at the seaside is the greatest thing in the world, because it never gets boring, there are undreamt-of liberties and friends are easy make. A picture book full of small scenes out of everyday life at the campground and fantastic illustrations which picture moments when camping turns into a true adventure.

»Where others write diaries, Philip Waechter draws – humorous, tender, full of chaos, depth, nonsense, everyday routine and special moments we all recognize, but forget much too quickly.« ELTERN family

Martin Baltscheit and Christine Schwarz present how animals deal with emotions in humorously pro-found poems. Lina lives up in the mountains and feels very lonesome. Yet the small blue bird, Nino, helps her to see the world through other eyes. A wonderful story by Klaus Kordon, which revolves around the most important thing in life – friendship.

Lina is a somewhat sullen young girl, because she lives on a mountain farm that is quite isolated. The animals call her »sourpuss« – Eugene the rooster, Helene the pig, Ottilie the cow and Melchior, the talkative raven. Lina wants nothing to do with Oskar, the boy who recently came to live on Goats’ Hill. Yet it is Oskar who lastly fi nds her after she falls and spends a terrible stormy night outdoors in the mountains.

Stefanie Höfler, born in 1978, studied German literature, English and Scandanavian studies in Freiburg and Dundee/Scotland. She works as a teacher and drama teacher in Esslingen, where she lives with her family. Mucks is her first book to be published.

At the pool this crazy summer, eccentric Zonja meets Mucks, who looks like a Martian, and she even saves his life a little bit. A very unusual story about friendship, told in such a warm-hearted and amusing fashion that you feel like reading the book over again right away.

Zonja’s curiousity is boundless, which is why most of the people in her class think she is crazy. Who cares! Zonja with a »Z« loves to watch people at the pool and make up statistics. On this certain day, she fi shes a boy with green swimming trunks and protruding ears, thin as a young birch tree, out of the water because he can’t swim. Strange. They play Scrabble, gaze at the stars together and eat many pancakes – actually Mucks is the fi rst person to become her real friend in years. Yet there is something very peculiar about him, and it takes all summer until she really knows why he dances in the rain and what the bruises and pepper spray mean.

»It took a minute until we both caught our breath

again. Then he looked at me from the side and

gave me his hand. A very bony, thin hand – his

left one. His grip was amazingly strong. »Thank you,« he said. And then, »Mucks.« Mucks? Is that a secret code, an alien greeting or what? The birch tree interpreted my look correctly and explained briefl y: »Mucks. That’s me.«

Jonna is fascinated by Leo with the red cowboy boots. He might be 19 already and a university student. She has no idea where he’s from or where he lives. He lodges himself in her fa-ther’s printing shop in the back of their build-ing and is not about to go away. And what seems so cool to Jonna at first, slowly begins to feel quite spooky …

»The story by the writer Regina Dürig, whose debut Katertag won several prizes, stands out with its eloquent language and the gentle narrative. By describing Leo as an unforgettable character, whose detachment is obvious, she is able to avoid an analysis and thus lets readers’ imaginations run free. Together with the main fi gure, Jonna, we ask ourselves which story Leo is carrying around with him. We feel attracted by his apparent independence or frightened by his ghostly for-eignness. In doing so, the author skillfully plays with world literary motifs and always maintains a fully independent narrative style.« Explanation of the jury for the Peter Härtling Prize

Beltz & Gelberg 19

A fulminant historical novel about the longing for unlimited freedom. Powerfully eloquent, vivid and irresistible.

Ireland, 1690: Anne Bonny is born as a bastard and is raised by her father as a boy. The male clothing provides certain benefi ts, yet Anne wants to be herself. As a young woman, she is considered the »most attractive and provocative beauty« of all Charleston. But »marry one of these sweet talkers«? Never! Anne’s longing for freedom is too great, her dream of a wild life in the legendary pirates’ realm »Libertalia« too strong. Anne’s heart beats for the pirate captain, James Bonny – they elope and to-gether go on a brutal raid through the Caribbean …

Anna Kuschnarowa studied archeology, German literature and prehistoric archeology and taught at several German universities for 10 years. Today she workes as a freelance author and photographer and travels as far away as possible in her free time, as often as she can. The novels most recently pub-lished with Beltz & Gelberg were Kinshasa Dreams and Djihad Paradise. www.anna-kuschnarowa.de

Anke M. Leitzgen and Gesine Grotrian are tinkerbrain. »tinker« means making things yourself, and we all know what »brain« is. For when children learn to do things them-selves, lots of great things happen – and they get smarter in the process! The two authors most recently published the 26-volume series Forschen, Bauen, Staunen von A bis Z/Explore, Build and Be Amazed. From A to Z.

An activity book that emboldens children age 9 and older. 60 tests of courage that girls and boys can do alone or with their parents, helping prepare them for the most important dangerous situations children face.

Diverse everyday situations call for children to be couragous and cautious. How do I react when a big dog approaches me? How does it feel to sleep under the stars at night? How do I protect someone who is being bul-lied by others? Children who know how to use a stove, have lit a fi re themselves and know how to state their opinion in a loud voice are much better prepared to deal with danger and challenges. For only those who have actually dealt with diffi cult situations are able to develop practical solutions.

This book provides children and families with ideas for staging and experiencing dangerous situations and thrilling challeng-es together. This teaches the whole family to work together and learn from each other.

»CHINA IS A TREE, WHICH BEARS DIFFERENT FRUIT TODAY,

YET STILL HAS THE SAME ROOTS.«

Beltz & Gelberg 23

To some he is a superstar, to others a brutal dictator – today some even only know him as a pop icon. Charlotte Kerner succeeds in presenting Mao Zedong (1893 – 1976) in all his controversy and explains why the farmer’s son not only changed his own world, but also the whole world. A critical, soundly re-searched and dedicated biography.

Mao Zedong, whose picture still hangs on the gate of Heavenly Peace in the center of Beijing, is the founder of the People’s Republic of China and the most famous Chinese in the world. As a revolutionary and ruler, Mao created and shaped modern China – up until the pre-sent. The personal revolt of the farmer’s son Zedong marks the beginning of this Chinese biography. Not only was his own future uncertain and doubtful at the beginning of the 20th century, but also that of his home country and a new, rebellious youth that not only wanted to understand the world, but also to change it. First by taking a look back, the future development of the world power in the 21st century becomes fathom-able and comprehensible. For in today’s China, whose global infl uence is greater today than ever before, Mao still plays a very unique role as an identity-establisher.

Charlotte Kerner, born in 1950, lives and works as a freelance journalist and author in Lübeck. She works as a freelance writer for GEO-Wissen, DIE ZEIT and EMMA. Beltz & Gelberg has published many of her books, including the noves Geboren 1999, Blueprint (winner of the German Youth Literature Prize) , Jane Reloaded. In addition, she has published many outstanding biographies on Maria Sybilla Merian, Lise Meitner and Hildegard von Bingen and most recently Die Fantastischen 6/The Fantastic 6. In her Mao biography, she was able to tie in her personal experiences in the »Middle Kingdom« as an exchange student shortly after the Cultural Revolu-tion 1977–78 and then a generation later in 2012, after the opening of the People’s Republic of China.
