DANCE AUDITIONS Congratulations to all of our Dance groups for being successful with their auditions for the North Sydney Dance Festival . All students and staff have worked very hard during Term 1 to learn the dance routines for the upcoming North Sydney Dance Fes-tival to be held at the end of this term. INFORMATION MORNING AND EVENING Today, we welcome parents and students interested in enrolling at Belrose PS for 2020 to our 9:30am and 6:30pm sessions. Thank you to our School Captains, Charli M and Caelan B, Jo Stracey, Elise Cooper and our Assistant Principals, Tom Davidson and Louise Green for their fine presentations. Both our K-2 and 2-6 choirs, and Performance/Concert Bands were very engag-ing. MOTHER’S DAY STALL—NEXT THURSDAY 9 MAY The P&C has kindly organised gifts for students to purchase next Thursday, 9 May. Gifts will be $10. Students are requested to bring their money from home. Classes have been timetabled to attend before lunch. Thank you to our volunteering parents. ASSEMBLIES Term 2 dates for assemblies are listed below: Monday 6 May from 2:15pm for Cross Country Ribbons presentation Monday 20 May at 2:25pm Monday 3 June at 2:25pm Monday 17 June at 2:25pm Monday 1 July at 9:30am The Celebration of Learning Assembly for Literacy and Responsibility Awards. NAPLAN TESTING The Annual NAPLAN testing for students in Years 3 and 5 will take place on Tuesday 14 May (Writing, Language Conventions), Wednesday 15 May (Reading) and Thursday 16 May (Numeracy). The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Later in the year, parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. The school will give your child some practice in ‘how to’ do the test. This is particularly good for the younger children as they may feel it is a lot different to anything else that they have done. I never advise additional coaching, practice with a tutor, buying books and apps from educational re-sellers. These coming days of assessment will be ‘part of the week’ of schooling. Getting them to school on time will be most helpful along with breakfast and a good night’s sleep. Mrs Ste-phens will deliver the Year 5 tests along with Mrs Killick and Mr Warren. 4W will follow their usual program but this will be taught by another teacher. OPPORTUNITY CLASSES FOR YEAR 5, 2020 (REMINDER) Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and talented students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2020, you need to apply. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 30 April 2019 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 The application website opened on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019. You must apply by the due date. There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disa-bility that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team. You must submit only ONE application for each stu-dent. Belinda Zorian Principal [email protected]

OUR VEGETABLE GARDEN

In our last week of term our super keen gardeners plant-

ed lots of carrots into our new wicking bed.

Thank you to Marie from Bunnings for donating all the

seedlings!

The seedlings won’t need to be watered, instead the

garden bed draws the water from the soil from the res-

ervoir of water at the base of the bed.

Rebecca Jones, Environmental Committee

In Term 1, our Eco Warriors conducted a waste audit which meant sorting and weighing

all the waste collected from just ONE day at Belrose Public School. The results were

frightening. Over 90% of our waste weight was food!

Did you know that when food in landfill breaks down, it

releases methane, a dangerous green house gas that is damaging to our

planet? At Belrose Public School we are going to make a difference, and

start composting ALL our food scraps so we are not contributing any

more food waste to landfill.

Kimbriki are now providing weekly visits to the school, to meet with our

Eco Warriors to further educate and ensure the composting system is

operating efficiently. Did you know approximately 50% of household

waste can be composted?

WHY ARE WE COMPOSTING AT SCHOOL?

This arrangement will involve the partial sponsorship of appropriate compost bins, tools and materials by

tumbleweed http://www.tumbleweed.com.au/ and the supply of Forest Fines Mulch for the compost by

ANL. We thank these three companies for their amazing support.
