I thought I would take this opportunity to address a very serious concern that appears to be hitting not just our Belmont Village seniors, but senior citizens close and far away. We have had more and more recent phone calls and letters from scam artists who prey on our residents. These letters are from both within the United States, as well as out of the country. They ask for social security and banking information, and come off as if they know you quite well when they make a call. These predators may tell you that “you have won a 2015 Cadillac!” and then ask for your banking information. Just recently, we had several residents who received both a telephone call AND a letter stating they had just won $300,000! A relative of one of the residents (who resides on the east coast) received the same letter. Both of these scams came from Canada. I would like to say that they only call on our residents’ telephone landlines; however, unfortunately, they are also calling on cellular telephones as well. Please do not provide any information if you receive a telephone call. The IRS, Social Security Administration, and other government agencies do not contact you via telephone. If you receive a letter that looks suspicious from anyone, please do not respond without having someone else take a look at it. I contacted the Burbank Police Department and alerted them of this increase. I also understand that AARP would like to hear of any scams that are out there, as they are a wonderful source for our seniors. I would appreciate it if any of you, should you receive a phone call or letter, would please provide me the details. The police are stating that they can’t keep up with the amount of scams that are out there. I believe in the power of communication and will continue to alert you when we hear of these types of concerns. Flu SeasonIt’s that time of year again ... flu
season is around the corner. Thetiming of flu is very unpredictableand can vary from season toseason. Most seasonal flu activitytypically occurs between Octoberand May, and in the United Statesthe flu most commonly peaksbetween December and January.The CDC recommends a yearly fluvaccine for everyone 6 months ofage or older as the first and mostimportant step in protectingagainst this serious disease. Peopleshould begin getting vaccinatedideally by October to ensure thatas many people as possible areprotected before flu season begins.It takes about two weeks aftervaccination for antibodies todevelop in the body and provideprotection against the flu. Inaddition to getting the vaccine,you can take everyday preventativeactions like staying away from sickpeople and washing your hands toreduce the spread of germs. If youare sick with the flu, stay home toprevent spreading the fluto others.
If you do get sick with the flu,antiviral drugs which areprescription drugs can be used totreat flu illness. Prompt treatmentwith antiviral drugs can preventserious flu complications. It canmean the difference betweenhaving a milder illness versus very
serious illness that could result ina hospital stay. Treatment withantivirals works best when begunwithin 48 hours of getting sick,but can still be beneficial whengiven later in the course of illness.
