NOTE FROM THE EDITORHappy New Year Sea Breeze !!!!

I hope everyone had a nice holiday and is ready to begin the new year. I wish this year brings Health and Happiness to all of our neighbors and families. It’s that time again to start fresh and make plans for the new year. It would be great if we could all think of a nice thing to do for a stranger or even a neighbor. If everyone just did one nice thing or made a nice gesture to a stranger, it sure would make a difference and maybe make you feel good. Maybe that’s what we are lacking right now. Just think about it, let’s make this the year of being nice. It can’t hurt.

Wishing you all much Health and Happiness in 2019 !!!! Debbie Caruso

Bill and Carol have two daughters, a veterinarian and a special education teacher for the primary grades. They have two wonderful grandchildren. January 2019 The Breezeway 5

Vincent and Dolores Navarro moved to 199 Ambermist Way on October 3, 2018 after spending 24 years on the water in Bayville. Prior to that, they were residents for 15 years in Clark, New Jersey. After graduation from Seton Hall in the early 1960s, Vince enlisted in the Air Force where he flew the C-130 Hercules and considers himself fortunate that he was never deployed to Vietnam. Vince was employed for 32 years by Union Carbide which was bought by Dow Chemical Company of DuPont. He then moved on to Kramer Chemical where he was the Executive Vice President of Distribution. He happily retired ten years ago. Dolores was a purchasing agent for various chemical corporations over a 20 year period. They met when Vince was in sales. He claims he sold her a bill of goods and it was instant chemistry; the rest is history. Dolores took early retirement to babysit and chauffer her

three granddaughters while her daughter returned to work. Their two daughters and three sons have blessed them with six grandchildren. They will become first time great-grandparents in January as they joyfully await the birth of a boy. Vince spends his spare time exploring the history of WW II and playing a little golf; he is also thinking of joining corn hole. Dolores likes to sew and dabble with interior design. She plays mah jong and is an avid reader. She is looking forward to becoming part of those two groups. We welcome them to the Sea Breeze community and wish them years of happiness.

Gene and Lorraine Sparta moved to 139 Ambermist Way on September 13, 2018, from Lakewood where they had lived for 2 ½ years. Previously, they had lived in Ridgefield for 27 years. Gene and Lorraine are both retired. Lorraine had been a hairdresser in Bergen County for 50 years. Gene had been a high school teacher and coach in Hoboken where he taught drafting and woodworking. He is in the Hoboken High School Hall of Fame, was President of the NCAA College Baseball Umpires, High School Football Officials for New Jersey, and Hudson County Baseball Umpires.Lorraine and Gene have a daughter and two grandchildren. They enjoy spending time with family who live in Morristown. Lorraine enjoys shopping and baking. Gene enjoys playing Poker and Texas Hold’em and going to Vegas. They both enjoy cruises. We welcome Gene and Lorraine to the Sea Breeze community.

CIVIC AFFAIRS GROUP

Your Civic Affairs group has not yet received any response or feedback from the NRC in regarding the questions we sent them on Oyster Creek.

We have not received any information as to when or where or even if the NRC will hold public hearings. No other group has received information either.

We urge our community to join either the Republican Club or the Democrat Club. SBL homeowners in each club have a loud voice in the direction of Lacey Township. We all need to participate in order to influence town direction.

We need your continued support and most importantly your help. The issues are overwhelming. Come and join us in addressing these issues. Not withstanding our main concern is rising taxes, but there are other issues that might also impact our quality of life. Join us!

We started a group called Concerned Citizens of Lacey Coalition, a non-partisan group, and we have over 100 signatures from our Sea Breeze community. We need more. We are also looking to have other communities in Lacey join us. We have worked to gain media attention. Your help is needed to help us maintain the support of the media if we are to influence decisions which will affect us.

Examples are: The State illegally took approximately $10 million from ERT (Energy Revenue Tax) earned from Oyster Creek. The State has agreed to pay it back over a 3-4 year period. On another issue, we are awaiting $10-to $15 million which should be ours for storing the spent nuclear rods for over 40 years! Imagine the positive impact on Lacey! Help us to help you all !

4th Annual Holiday Candlelight Stroll & House Tour December 2018

Stroll Along With Us

This is the fourth year that Karen Roth has organized the Sea Breeze Holiday Candlelight Stroll and Home Tour. Each year our community chooses a different charity to support and this year the contributions have been donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The residents who decorated and opened their homes to us are, the Martinez’s, the Sysyn’s, the De George’s, the Battista’s, the Nodes’, and the Roth’s. Many other people helped to make the evening a success. Mike Pennell along with Beth and Ron Spadaccini donated the luminary bags and set up the display at the homes to be shown. Local florists donated arrangements for each home: Every Bloomin’ Thing, Sunflower Florist, Forked River Florist, Narcissus Florals, Reynolds Garden Center and ShopRite Florist. Toll Brothers supplied the refreshments at the clubhouse after the stroll for over 200 people who visited the homes. Karen wants to thank all the many volunteers who helped with registration, food, coffee, and cleanup and hopes we can keep this tradition for years to come. It’s a wonderful way to ring in the holidays.

THE LADIES OF STITCH AND BITCH MEETRONALD McDONALD

Our Sea Breeze “Stitch and Bitch” ladies have been at it again. This past November the “SnB” ladies made two separate visits to our local Ronald McDonald Houses in Long Branch and New Brunswick to deliver a total of 44 beautiful, handmade quilts and blankets. Our RMcD project started in January, 2018 and the ladies were busy all year crocheting, knitting and quilting all of the blankets. The

trips were a big success and the staff at both of the Houses were extremely happy to receive the blankets, which will be used in their “Welcome Packages.”

The Stitch and Bitch group meets every Wednesday morning at 10:00 in the Clubhouse and new members are always welcome.

THANKSGIVING BRUNCHAbout six years ago former resident and then chair

of the Social Committee Frank Williams and his wife Linda, thought it would be enjoyable to have a Pancake Breakfast and simultaneously raise funds for the Lacey Food Bank. The following year, Frank (new chair) and Sally Guerrierie renamed it the Thanksgiving Brunch and they thought it would be agreeable if those attending gave thanks by sharing and donating various brunch foods. The tradition has continued under the leadership of Ana Maria (former chair) and Bob Soto and assisted by Judy and Keith Hovey. Ana Maria is continually impressed by the generosity of the community. Six years ago a contribution of a few hundred dollars was donated; in the past couple of years our community has contributed over $2,000 each year. “When I go to the food bank to deliver the money the people in charge break down in tears” Ana Maria stated. Also serving the food bank are residents Ruth and Luis Velez; they are the organizers of the spring food collection. The compassion and charitable nature of Sea Breeze is sincerely appreciated. Along with residents donating food to the November 18th gathering, The Lakeside Diner at 429 Lacey Road donated the pancakes, bacon and sausage. We owe them a big thank-you.

Artisan’s Restaurant & Brewery1171 Hooper Ave., Toms River, NJ

Artisan’s is located in the Seacourt Pavillion near the Lowe’s Seacourt Movie Theater, so it is a great place to go before or after a movie. It is a large restaurant with a bar area and space for private parties. The menu is classic Italian and Mediterranean, but you can also enjoy burgers and pizza. They have daily lunch and dinner specials, a three-course early bird menu for $15.95, and a special Sunday menu. They also offer some gluten-free and vegan items as well as a good selection of house made desserts.

We visited on several different occasions and were not disappointed. We have had the boneless beef short ribs that were tender and delicious, the roasted salmon with quinoa and a blood orange sauce, a chicken dish with vinegar peppers and broccoli rabe served over polenta, orecchiette with broccoli rabe and sausage, and a classic penne vodka. All the entrees were prepared well, and the service was very good. They offer a large selection of house-brewed beers and an extensive wine list.

We had lunch there on Sunday and dinner a couple of times during the week. It is quite busy on the weekends, so reservations are a good idea.

National Trivia Day

January 4th is National Trivia Day. The trivia craze has been a part of popular culture for many decades. One of the first established systems for trivia debuted on the 1940s radio program “Take It or Leave It”; additional radio shows developed and they were followed by TV versions in the 1950s. Jeopardy, America’s most iconic trivia show, first appeared in 1964. Trivial Pursuit emerged in 1979 and became one of the world’s most famous board games. The love for obscure facts has taken the world by storm and a variety of trivia formats have found success. While some people may find trivia ‘trivial’, it’s the silly facts and the uniqueness that make it enjoyable for everyone. Take this quiz in honor of the day set aside for people to show how they love being right without preparation.1. Who saved Abraham Lincoln’s son from a nasty railroad accident? 2. What was the original color of Oscar the Grouch? 3. Who is the only athlete ever to play in a Super Bowl and a World Series? 4. What is the sum of all the numbers on a roulette wheel? 5. What famous doctor was trained as a sniper by the Israeli military?6. Which is the only country to have played in every World Cup? 7. Which was first Hydrox or Oreo? 8. Who edited Michael Jackson’s 1988 autobiography Moonwalk?9. Who was the first American woman in space?10. What movie won the first Academy Award for Best Picture?

Answers:1. John Wilkes Booth 2. Orange 3. Deion Sanders 4. 666 5. Dr. Ruth6. Brazil 7. Hydrox 8. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis 9. Sally Ride 10. Wings

Sports Talk

I hope everyone had a great Holiday and your college and pro teams are still playing football. The NFL season is over and the playoffs will start in a few days. The college season is down to one game as the semi -finals were played on December 29th. Are your favorite teams still playing?

This year there were some questions about how the teams were chosen and why some were left out. The constant answer every year is to increase the size of the playoff field from the present four to six and even eight schools. Critics say this will insure that all of deserving teams will be included. However, NCAA basketball has shown that even 64 teams was not enough. We now have a field of 68 basketball programs.

If we were to see an expansion of the field to six or eight teams we would need to extend the season at least a week or start the playoffs before Christmas. Both of these solutions come with their own set of problems. Any extension of the season past its present date would make football a two semester sport at many schools and could create eligibility issues that could render some players ineligible for the playoffs since many do not enroll for the spring semester or their fall grades (these now come into play) are insufficient to continue to play. I will talk about it in our January 16 Sports Talk.

An early start to the playoffs would place them right before Christmas. Games would have to be played on college campuses without students who have left for their winter break. It would also have to deal with major travel issues since sites would be unknown until a week before the games were to be played. Remember, it’s Christmas time and travel is already brutal.

Finally, many expansion critics have said that the type of expansion could lead some schools to play as many as 16 games [like the NFL]. I believe that at some point we will see a form of expansion but it will take a carefully crafted plan and will impact the regular college football season. Time will tell how things turn out for college football. Stay tuned as the seasons and sports change to basketball and hockey. Spring is not that far away. The answer to last month’s trivia question:College Hail Mary pass- QB Doug Flutie, receiver Gerald Phelan, Boston College vs. Miami.Pro Hail Mary pass -QB Roger Stauback, receiver Drew Pearson ,Dallas Cowboys vs. Minnesota Vikings.

This month’s trivia question:In 1960 Ohio State University won the NCAA men’s basketball championship. Can you name all the players from that team that played in the NBA and the one who became a Hall of Fame Coach?

5th Annual Canasta TournamentForty-four players competed in this year's Canasta

Tournament played in the clubhouse on Saturday, November 10th. Al Sherman and Steve Papas claimed the winner's title for 2018 with a record 43,640 points. The pair of Karen Petillo and Helen Pecelli finished second with Arlene DeSarno and Marianne Ras rounding out the top three, in third place.

Players assembled before 10:00 am to review the Canasta League of America's rules of play and the first cards were dealt at 10:30 am. After a short break for lunch, play continued until 4.00 pm when the final scores were revealed and the prizes were awarded. Dee Walsh and Stacey Christofis, who acted as both referees and tabulators,

deserve a special mention for successfully overseeing the rooms and keeping track of the points throughout the day.

Canasta's popularity in the Sea Breeze community continues to grow as evidenced by the 22 teams that competed this year versus 18 teams in 2017. Thanks are due, as always, to Fran Geanoules, who teaches and encourages new players and who organizes the annual competitions, and to Toll Brothers who maintained their sponsorship of the event. All the teams who participated in this year's tournament had fun and enjoyed the competition, and they are already looking forward to next year's tournament and to welcoming new players into the game.

Author Review Donna Leon

Donna Leon is the American author of a series of 28 crime novels set in Venice, Italy featuring the fictional hero Commissario Guido Brunetti. Born in New Jersey, Leon lived in Venice for over 30 years and now divides her time between Venice and Switzerland.

Leon is the ideal author for people who long for a good mystery. That she

is also a brilliant writer only adds to the consistently comforting appeal of her warmhearted detective who takes what solace he can from the beauty of his city and the homely domestic rituals that give him strength.

Venice is not among the big crime cities; regardless, Commissario Brunetti is assigned to investigate more than his fair share of mysterious deaths in that city and while doing so uncovers for the reader, Venice.

Although he works just across from a vaporetto stop, Commissario Brunetti prefers to walk the calli to both admire and scorn the changes in his city as well as to work off the wonderful meals available at home and on the go. This gives the reader the feeling of walking next to a tour guide but without the earphones.

When he is in need of a break, he simply walks down the stairs of the Questura, the police station, and finds his regular bar on the street. He might enjoy a cappuccino and a small pastry or a prosciutto panini with a small wine (always water on the side) while he lets off some steam and allows the evidence of his most recent assignment run thorough his thinking processes.

Brunetti must finesse his supervisor, the vain and self-serving buffoon, Vice-Questore Giuseppe Patta, and find ways to keep his investigations on track without too much political interference from Patta and his attack dog, Lieutenant Scarpa.

Reading this series in the order published offers the reader the chance to see societal changes in the characters’ world view, and of course, the author’s, but it’s not really necessary to start at “Death at La Fenice” published in 1992. It’s just as rewarding to read the books randomly. The Donna Leon series lets us visit, in an authentic way, the streets and waterways of this beautiful city, its people and the food most loved, while serving up a great mystery.

Most of Ms. Leon’s books can be found at the Lacey Library in the mystery section, or ordered through the Ocean County Library. Her latest installment in the Brunetti series, number 28, is called “Unto Us A Son Is Given”. Take one or more on your next plane ride, even if it’s to Venice, Florida.
