Introductions and Conclusions

Begin + End Your Paper Effectively

Page 4: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

What do you know? What do you need to know?

Fill in the “K” and “W” section on your charts. If you can’t think of what to say, here are some questions to consider:

● What should an introduction do overall?● What are the parts of a successful introduction?● What should a conclusion do overall?● How are an introduction and a conclusion alike?

Page 5: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

A good introduction...

DOES

● Engage the reader● Set the tone of the paper● Present the thesis● Includes title + author when referencing a

work of literature or rhetoric● Have around 100-150 words

DOES NOT

● Present any evidence● List what the paper will be about● Start with “Imagine…”● Have more words than your body

paragraphs

Page 6: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

Parts of the introduction

Attention getter● Consider one of the nine types; if you don’t use one of those, it needs to be something

better and more interesting

Bridge● The transition from your attention getter to your thesis (includes transition words +

phrases)

Thesis● You know what that is. It should be the final sentence of your intro.

Page 7: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

WARNING: BAD intro ideas

Using a random, undocumented quote from the internet● All quotes need to be cited from reliable sources (not just supposedly said

by someone reliable)

Starting with “imagine…”● This was a great idea… in fourth grade

Having no clear attempt to engage the reader● Why not at least try???

Page 8: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

A good conclusion...

DOES

● Refer back to the intro in some way to bring the paper full circle

● Begin by restating the thesis● Have around as many words as the intro

*MAY include a call to action or intriguing point for the reader to ponder when they finish reading

DOES NOT

● Summarize or re-list all of the main points of the paper

● Have one or two sentences

Page 9: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

Parts of the conclusion

Thesis● You know what that is. It should be the final sentence of your intro.

Bridge● The transition from your thesis back to the bigger idea you will leave your reader with.

Final thought● The idea or question you want to leave your reader with.

Page 10: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

So, intros and conclusions both...

● Present NO evidence● Center on engaging the reader● Have a common thread to tie them together and bring the paper full circle● Include the thesis

Page 11: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

For THIS essay...

● I recommend referencing the “other” work in your introduction● See example on sample essay (I reference “IGMUS” in my paper about

“NBN”)● This reference can be your attention getter● Use your work time to plan your intro + conclusion

Page 12: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

Rhetorical anlaysis: Body

ParagraphsOverall ideas + for this paper

Page 13: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

Body Paragraphs● Where your argument, evidence, and proof come together to prove your

point

● ALL ideas clearly support the thesis○ Key words from thesis must appear throughout paragraph, not just in topic sentence /

summary sentence

● Use an organizational strategy to help your reader follow your argument

● Have around 200 words; less than 150 indicates lack of depth of

development

Page 14: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

Body Paragraphs● Begin with topic sentence

● End with summary / transition sentence (see sample essay for example)

● Contain at least two clearly developed examples to support topic sentences

○ Examples = evidence + explanation

○ Examples are organized into “chunks”

■ 8 -sentence

■ Majors-minors

■ Quotation sandwiches

Page 15: Bellwork 14 September 2016 If it is done, you get to type ... · Bellwork Look over the comments on your thesis/topic sentences that I returned ... Using a random, undocumented quote

Quotation Sandwich ReviewTOP SLICE:● Your assertion about how the author uses a strategy to achieve his purpose.

FILLING:● Cited evidence of the strategy in use in the writing.

BOTTOM SLICE (this is the challenging part):● Your explanation of how the strategy achieves the purpose you said it would. See

the sample essay on the back of your assignment for more examples.● Bottom slice must have a clear connection back to overall purpose. The reader

should not have to figure out the connection. You have to say what it is.

Yes vs. No

Bradbury emphasizes the importance of literacy in order to warn people of its continued value in the face of technological progress.

Bradbury presents Mildred to portray the importance of literature since, without it, she becomes emotionless.

Bradbury’s shift in tone from ominous and destructive to hopeful and constructive shows how literature fulfills humanity.

Through Faber’s explanation of the value of books, Bradbury makes his own stand on the value of literature.

In the novel, people value technological process over literature.

Mildred values technology over literature and nearly commits suicide as a result.

Montag goes from being depressed to being more optimistic as he discovers literature.

The character Faber also discusses how literature should not be devalued in the face of technology.

So now...

● Revise thesis + topic sentences● Using today’s handout, get them checked by 3 peers

○ Under “Thesis,” I have no idea what I meant by the third YES NO thing (the purpose they have written about), so ignore that

● Turn in by 4:00 today (and you will get them back tomorrow)● 10 points of achievement grade
