Defnition 8ell;s palsy is a condition o' paralysis or weaness (%sora) o' 'acial muscles o' one side due to swellin (%sora< Sycosis)= in>ammation or damae (%sora<Syphilis) to the se7enth cranial ner7e called 'acial ner7e= causin that side o' the'ace to droop= and a4ect the sense o' taste= lachrymation and sali7ation (%sora<Sycosis).

Bell’  s Palsy and Homoeopathy

Etymology,n mid "?th cent- Sir &harles 8ell ("::3"A3#)= the Scottish anatomist !rst

descri9ed it.

Epidemiology the condition can a4ect people o' any ae= commonly 9etween the aes o'

"B and BC. 8ells palsy is named a'ter the Scottish anatomist &harles 8ell= who was

the !rst to descri9e the condition.

AnatomySe7enth cranial ner7e or 'acial ner7e passes throuh the stylomastoid 'oramen

and 'acial canal o' temporal 9one to enter into the parotid land. ,t controls the

muscles o' the nec= 'orehead and 'acial e6pressions= as well as percei7ed sound

7olume. ,t has a mi6ed 'unction= primarily motor= 9ut also sensory and

parasympathetic.

Pathophysiology,n>ammation o' eniculate anlion= a roup o' !9res and sensory neurons=

leads to compression within this 9ony canal (%sora< Sycosis). +his can in turn

9loc the transmission o' neural sinals= resultin in ischemia and demyelination

(%sora< Syphilis)= causin 'acial paralysis or 8ell;s palsy.

$ lesion may in7ol7e the 'acial ner7e anywhere alon its course= and 9ased upon

speci!c sins and symptoms= the location o' the patholoy can 9e deduced. ,t

may cause two types o' presentations central and peripheral 'acial weaness.

Central acial weaknessDue to 9ilateral supranuclear inner7ation o' the upper 'acial musculature= a

central palsy spares 'orehead and 9row motion. +here may 9e preser7ation o'

emotional or in7oluntary 'acial motion.

Peripheral acial weakness,t in7ol7es 9oth upper and lower 'acial muscles. %reser7ation o' emotional or

in7oluntary 'acial motion is not seen with a peripheral paralysis.

!ymptoms  +he symptoms usually appear rapidly= and notice them upon wain or

when tryin to eat or drin. (%sora)  +he symptoms commonly de7elop o7er hours or days. Men and women

are eFually a4ected. (%sora) 8ells palsy is mared 9y a droopy appearance on one side o' the 'ace and

the ina9ility to open or close the eye on the a4ected side. ,n rare cases=

8ells palsy may a4ect 9oth sides o' the 'ace. (%sora< Syphilis)

ther sins and symptoms o' 8ells palsy include-

/eaness or complete paralysis o' an entire side o' the 'ace (%sora<

Syphilis) %tosis o' eye lid (%sora< Syphilis)

Droolin 'rom the a4ected side o' the mouth (%sora< Syphilis)

%ain around the ear (%sora< Sycosis < Syphilis)

&linical presentation may 9e as 9elow-

#emporal presentation

Sudden onset suests an in>ammatory or 7ascular etioloy e..= 8ell;spalsy or stroe.

Slowly proressi7e palsy suests a neoplastic process= especially i' there

are episodes o' 'acial twitchin e..= 'acial ner7e neuroma. 8ell;s palsy should impro7e within B months= whereas palsy caused 9y a

tumor does not heal away itsel'. %alsy occurrin immediately a'ter trauma or surery suests transection

o' the ner7e= whereas a delayed onset usually implies edema o' the ner7e

which usually impro7es with time. ,n 8ells palsy= recurrence may 9e contralateral while recurrent episodes o'

palsy on the same side= tumor may 9e the etioloy.

E-tent o in.ol.ement

,t is important to assess the amount o' 'acial palsy present initially= so that

chanes o7er time can 9e nown.  +he e6act areas o' weaness should 9e noted= 9ecause sparin o'

'orehead motion or emotional 'acial e6pression suests a central

etioloy= whereas palsy o' 9oth the upper and lower 'ace suests a

peripheral lesion. ,' only one or two distal 9ranches o' the 'acial ner7e are a4ected= possi9le

etioloies include parotid land tumors= 'acial surery= or 'acial trauma.
