Chlorine Dioxide:Economical, Environmentally Friendly Disinfection

Since more attention is nowbeing paid to the secondaryreactions produced by con-ventional water disinfectiontreatments, the disinfection ofdrinking water and water forindustrial use with chlorinedioxide (ClO2) is gaining insignificance.

High strength disinfectionwith minimal environmentalimpact

Chlorine dioxide is an inte-resting alternative to chlorinebecause of the completelydifferent relationship involved, between action and reaction.Chlorine dioxide produces noorganic chlorine compoundswith those contaminants mostfrequently found in water, e.g.chlorophenols or halogenatedhydrocarbons (for examplehaloforms such as chloroformwhich is considered carcino-genic).

The compounds formed fromthe reaction of chlorine dioxidewith organic water contami-nants are therefore largelynegligible from the point ofview of quantitative, sensoryor toxicity considerations. This makes chlorine dioxide

the ideal disinfecting agent forthe treatment of drinkingwater, even when used forwater which contains organiccontaminants, e.g. surfacewater, or water containinghumic acid.

Minute quantities of chlorinedioxide are sufficient to disin-fect drinking water. In mostapplications, a concentrationof 0.1 mg ClO2/l water issufficient and the chlorinedioxide produced by theBello Zon® process is ideal forthe food and drinks industry. It is important to add thatresidual concentrations cau-sed by unavoidable contactwith the product cause noharm.

Chlorine dioxide can also beused to disinfect soft waterwith a high pH value. Its disin-fecting property is greaterthan that of chlorine, whichbecomes less effective as thepH value increases.

Wherever sterile water isrequired for washing, rinsingor disinfecting, Chlorine dioxi-de produced by ProMinent'sBello Zon® plants is the supe-rior alternative to chlorine.

The Bello Zon® process isbased on the use of twoliquids. The resulting chlorine-free chlorine dioxide remainsdissolved in water and cantherefore be safely and pre-cisely administered. Thesafety measures required aretherefore fundamentally moresimple than with chlorine gasplants.

Bello Zon® plants producechlorine dioxide on site

Chlorine dioxide is a gaswhose physical propertiesprevent it either from being

bottled or compressed. Itsunstable nature would causeit to break down and storageis not commercially viable.Chlorine dioxide must there-fore be manufactured on sitein specially developed plants.

With the Bello Zon® processfrom ProMinent, chlorinedioxide can be simply andsafely produced from hydro-chloric acid and sodiumchlorite. The quantity of chlo-rine dioxide produced can

easily be adapted accordingto requirements by adjustingthe frequency of the solenoiddosing pump. This can becontrolled manually or auto-matically by connecting awater gauge or regulator.

The internationally renownedProMinent® solenoid dosingpumps pump the chemicalsinto a reactor where theycombine to form a solutionof chlorine dioxide. The con-centrate from the reactor

(approx. 20 g ClO2/l)is dilutedwhen it passes through a by-pass pipe. It feeds continu-ously into the flow of waterwhich is to be treated. Afundamental characteristic ofthis process is the productionof chlorine-free chlorine dio-xide solution which is adjust-ed precisely in accordancewith the application require-ments.

Applications

Because of their compactform, simple operation andhigh safety standards theBello Zon® plants are suitedto many applications, suchas:

Care of public water supply, the food industry and thedrinks industry

treating drinking water andwater for industrial use

Apart from highly effectivedisinfection, long term pro-tection against bacteria in thedistribution network is provi-ded for. Moreover, chlorinedioxide helps to removeodour and taste from water(breaking down phenols, algal metabolic porductsetc.). As chlorine dioxidedoes not react with ammonia, less is needed than whenchlorine is used.

Brewing and drinks industry

 bottle cleansing

Even when pH levels arehigh, the Bello Zon® providesprotection against micro-organisms as the chlorinedioxide level is controlledby residual measurementin the cold water zone. Themeasurement of chlorinedioxide content takes placeonline with the aid of theDULCOTEST® chlorine dioxidemeasuring probe.

Also within the drinks indu-stry the Bello Zon® can beused in:

 rinsers CIP (cleaning in place)

plants pasteurisers recoolers autoclaves

Milk industry

 vapour treatment

Re-using condensed waterhelps to reduce the con-sumption of fresh water.Chlorine dioxide protectsagainst micro-organisms.

Food Industry

treatment of water inwhich fruit and vegetablesare washed

treatment of water which isto be used in the prepara-tion of fish and seafood

 preparation of poultry

Chlorine dioxide prolongsshelf life and provides effec-tive protection from salmo-nella.

Paper Industry

by tackling myxobacteriain the water circulatingaround the paper plant, operating costs can beconsiderably reduced.

Bello Zon® Chlorine Dioxide Plants:Modern Technology with Great Advantages

Simple to operate

With the aid of the micro-processor control system thedosage quantities are setdirectly. When the plant isoperating in automatic mode

(proportional to flow) therequired dose per litre canbe pre-determined, e.g.0.15 mg/l. The LCD controldisplay also provides informa-tion on the plant productionlevels and the flow throughthe main water pipe.

Additionally the plant canadminister chlorine dioxide inaccordance with the require-ments indicated by the read-ings to cyclical water systemsusing controller.

Remote display of chlorinedioxide production levels

The plant production levelscan be transmitted to a re-mote measuring unit via ananalogue gauge, as can thevolume of flow through themain water pipe when theplant is operating under flow-proportional control.

Optimum safety technology

Bello Zon® chlorine dioxideplants from ProMinent are

equipped with a flow sensorfor chemicals which guaran-tees a consistently optimumflow through the system. Italso monitors the flow ofbypass water. The levels inthe chemical containers areequipped with a relay switchwhich enables the triggeringof warning sign: “chemicallevels low”. The reactor vesselis automatically ventilated viaan injector and a solenoidvalve.

High chlorine dioxide yield

The optimal current reactorguarantees a high yield ofmore than 90 %. It is contain-ed in an anti corrosive hous-ing, separate from the dosingpump and the dosage moni-tor.

Quick to install

The hydraulic and electricalcomponents of the Bello Zon®

chlorine dioxide plant arrivepre-wired and ready for oper-ation, housed in a plasticconsole. If a bypass pump isrequired, it can be connecteddirectly.

Chlorine dioxide needs fordifferent applications

Plants from the CDVa rangewhich operate using dilutedchemicals (9 % hydrochloricacid and 7.5 % sodium chlori-te) are suitable for small tomedium production capacityrequirements.

Plants from the CDKa rangehave a medium to large pro-duction capacity. They use30-33 % hydrochloric acid

and 25 % sodium chlorite. Athird pump adds the additio-nal water required for dilutingthe chemicals in the reactor.

The models in this rangealready comply with the newDVGW1 -Document W624“Dosing plants for disinfectingand oxidising agents; dosingplants for chlorine dioxide”.

Chlorine dioxide can bemeasured online usingamperometric sensor tech-nology

The DULCOMETER® measur-ing and regulating technologymakes it possible to measureprecisely thequantity of chlori-ne dioxide inwater.

The chlorine diox-ide measuringcell DULCOTEST®

from ProMinentuses an ampero-metric measuringsystem which isboth the mostaccurate, andeasily reprodu-ced, method ofmeasurement. The calibrationresults from the DPD method(colorometric chlorine dioxidemeasurement). Chlorine dioxi-de concentrations of between0 - 10 mg/l may be measured. The measuring cells are con-structed from PVC andAcrylicglass. They may besupplemented with a pHand/or Redox probes andare supplied in three valueranges. They may be used

equally effectively in freshwater and salt water.

DULCOMETER® D1C control-lers correspond to real setvalues and set the productionlevels in accordance with thevarying values.
