Cover Letter from Mrs. Romberg

I gave Kaitlin a little help with this portfolio, but she decided which projects to include and made most of the design decisions on the computer. I helped her scan in the pictures and I did most of the text entry and set the links.

Kaitlin has been a delight to know the past two years.

Learning to PrintJan 12, 2005

Notes

Description - Standards

Description of project: The children had been learning to print all of the letters. For several weeks they were copying words out of books, this was one of the first times that Kaitlin had to print letters without copying them. Kids were given lined paper and used crayons. We will move to pencils next month.

Standards demonstrated:

NL-ENG.K-12.5 COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES• Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.

Notes on this project or references:

Spelling didn’t count, but she did not make any spelling mistakes. Kids were given fifteen minutes to complete this.

Student comments:At first printing on paper was hard. I’m use to typing it on the computer… and there’s no spelling checker! But, now I’m starting to like it.

Parent Comments:Kaitlin was pretty frustrated at first in trying to learn to print letters, but she stuck with it. This is a sample of the dozens of times she did the same exercise. Mrs. Adams

Summary Comments:

This year included a cross-curriculum unit combining science with art. Kaitlin had several projects which showed her creativity. Her drawing was accurate and attractive. Her writing was pretty brief (see Summary Assessment on next screen) She had a good grasp on biology (see Butterfly project)

Kaitlin has been a pleasure to have in my class. She was always enthusiastic (you can hear it in her voice in the audio clip). Her reading skills developed incredibly. I would like to see her work harder on writing longer passages and her math skills are only “emerging”. She was really proud of her learning to play keyboard and her science experiments. She worked on her social skills in making friends and working cooperatively.

Good job, Kaitlin!
