This is the 30th scintillating year of Bellefonte Victorian Christmas, where the merchants, residents, and volunteers of this lovely town open its doors and hearts to holiday visitors. Every year there’s something new – with many old favorite events that have become traditions. The opening ceremony will be held Friday evening, December 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the comfort of the Bellefonte Elementary School Auditorium. First, there’s a prelude of Christmas music by the Bellefonte Community Band. Guests will receive a warm welcome from Mr. Charles Dickens on the steps of the Bellefonte Elementary School. The ceremony itself will feature performances from the Nittany Knights, and local school choirs. The finale will be a preview of A Dickens Holiday Show. Then join your neighbors in the school lobby for a cookie and hot- chocolate reception provided by the Bellefonte Moose Lodge 206. The weekend will be ushered in with A Gaslight Gala, a posh, themed evening of exquisite comestibles, elegant service, and top-notch entertainment. Professional singers, actors, and musicians present Victorian traditions like the Yule Log Ceremony, the Cheese Contest, cameo solos, and Dickens ever popular staging of A Christmas Carol. It’s Thursday evening, December 8, at 7 p.m. at the American Philatelic Society Building, 100 Match Factory Place. The $75 admission includes dinner and Dickens show. Reservations required. Call (814) 355-2917. On Saturday evening, December 10 at 5 p.m., Dinner With Dickens & Company features a family buffet and themed dinner theater with interactive characters, table-side magic, the 12 days of Christmas

You’ll enjoy a return performance of the Bellefonte Elementary School’s choir at the Opening Ceremony Friday, December 9.
The Nittany Knights performed at the opening ceremony last year, and will return again this year!
The opening ceremony will be at the Bellefonte Elementary School, including the Bellefonte Community Band, the Nittany Knights, the Bellefonte Elementary School’s fourth- and fifth- grade choir, middle school women’s chorale, St. Johns Elementary Choir, and a preview of It’s A Dickens Holiday Show, here is last year’s icy stroll to the elementary school, led by Dickens himself.
The choir from St. Johns will be there again this year.
Those who have shivered a little at past opening ceremonies at the courthouse will appreciate the indoor opening planned this year at the Bellefonte Elementary School. Come to the elementary school and be greeted by “Charles Dickens” and the Bellefonte Community Band at 6:30 p.m. Friday, December 9. Enjoy performances by the Bellefonte Community Band, the Nittany Knights, the elementary school’s fourth- and fifth-grade choir, middle school women’s chorale, St. John’s elementary school choir, and other special performances – including a preview of It’s a Dickens Holiday Show. Stick around for a reception of cookies and hot chocolate, provided by the Bellefonte Moose Lodge 206 – meet and greet your neighbors, and make plans for a lovely old-fashioned Victorian Christmas weekend.

He’ll be holding court at The Santa House from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, December 10 and 11. Make reservations for the whole family at the Dinner with Dickens – a buffet dinner-theatre event from 5 to 7 p.m. at the American Philatelic Society. You’ll enjoy a great buffet served by Hoag’s Catering, plus interactive characters, table-side magic, the 12 Days of Christmas show, and various parlor games all will enjoy. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children and students. Call (814) 355-2917 for reservations. Dress the whole family in Victorian garb if you want!
There’s a new location for Breakfast with Santa and Victorian Christmas Children’s Party – Saturday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Lambert Hall on Blanchard Street. Cost for a full breakfast is $5 for adults, $3 for children. Free crafts and activities, free children’s caricatures by Chip Mock, and free visits with Santa even if they are not attending the breakfast. Always a favorite, A Child’s Victorian Tea is served three times during the weekend, at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday – at the Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County. The cost is $10 for each child. Call (814) 355-9606 for reservations. New this year, a free art session for children called Art with Artists for Kids, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Bellefonte Art Museum. Just drop in. Activities include making cards and decorations for the holidays. Parents are asked to stay with the kids for this event. Take the kids inside the Centre County Library for a warm welcome and holiday fun. On Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m., it’s
Story Time and Crafts with the Elves. Give the whole family a taste of the pace of yesteryear – horse-drawn carriage rides are available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with tickets available at the Brockerhoff, $7.50 for adults, $5 for children age 12 and under. There are surprises on every corner – strolling carolers, magicians, Dickens characters, and Civil War re-enactors. Music, Magic & Merriment The sounds of Christmas can be heard all over the town - all weekend long. From Friday’s opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m., featuring the Bellefonte Community Band, Nittany Knights, and local choirs to the grand finale, the Victorian Christmas Community Choir Concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening, music will raise the holiday spirit in every heart. There are sing-along songs at the Victorian High Tea & Brunch, carolers roaming the streets, Steinway piano concerts at the historical museum, and a soloist singing Oh, Holy Night at the Gaslight Gala. Trinity United Methodist Church is filled with instruments
and song from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, including folk, trombones, flutes, Celtic, piano, choirs, and a woodwind quintet. The Bellefonte Community Band presents its Christmas concert Saturday evening at the First Presbyterian Church. The Victorian Christmas Singers present their concert Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. John’s. You never know when the Dickens troupe will break into song – at special presentations and while roaming the festive streets. Enjoy the Victorian Christmas Community Choir Concert, directed by Miriam Locklin, Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Bellefonte High School
theatre. Larger than the churches where this popular concert was once held, the high school should accommodate everyone who wants to attend. For many, this top-notch presentation is their “official beginning” to the Christmas season. All of the musical performances are free, with the exception of those at the Gaslight Gala, High Tea & Brunch, and Dinner with Dickens – all held at the American Philatelic Society building. Make your reservations today and see the article about the Dickens feasts in this issue. Here’s a complete list of musical and theatrical events at Victorian Christmas, all free except noted with an *.

The Arts & Crafts Show is a cooperative effort of the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association and The Bellefonte Arts & Craft Fair Committee. This is a wonderful place to start – or finish – your Christmas shopping. You may be assured that these hand-made pieces are made in the U.S.A. – in the best traditions of quality and taste. You’ll find framed artwork and photos, handmade jewelry and pottery, cozy clothing and needlework, glass and wood, handy housewares, and pretty decorations. Toys for the kids, thoughtful gifts for men, and plenty of stocking stuffers are on sale in three different town venues. Vendors will show off their artfully made wares on Saturday, December 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, December 11
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bellefonte YMCA on High Street, the Bellefonte Elementary School on the corner of Allegheny and Linn Streets, and – new this year – the Bellefonte Middle School on School Street. Bellefonte Middle School will feature handcrafted artisan works, local non-profit organization fundraisers, and buy – and sell
vendors. If you’re taking the shuttle bus from the high school and middle school, the middle school arts and crafts show will be your shopping stop nearest the car! Food concessions will be available at all three, and there are plenty of hometown lunches, dinners, snacks, and sweet treats available throughout Bellefonte.
