BELLE (Referring to her books)

First I went to a far off fairy tale land, and then I went to St. Petersburg to see the Tsar!

MAURICE Hmmm, yes.

Papa, do you think I’m odd?

MAURICE Where did you get an idea like that?

BELLE

Oh, I don’t know. People talk.

MAURICE You know, your mother was so different, so daring, so ahead of her time that people talked

about her too…until the day they found themselves imitating her.

BELLE Tell me more.

MAURICE

Your mother was…fearless. Fearless. To know anything more, you just have to look in the mirror.

Now, these music boxes won’t sell themselves, will they?

BELLE This is beautiful work, Papa. I’m amazed how each one captures its own little tale.

(Out of nowhere, the hideous BEAST roars and bounds on in the shadows)

BELLE (CONT’D) Who’s there? Who are you?

BEAST

Get out!

BELLE I’ve come for my father. Release him.

BELLE

I asked for the rose. Step into the light! (The BEAST steps out of the shadow.)

BELLE (CONT’D)

Punish me, not him.

BEAST You’ll be my prisoner forever!

BELLE

A life sentence for a rode?

BEAST I received eternal damnation for one. Now…do you still wish to take your father’s

place?...Choose!

BELLE Alright. I will leave. I need a minute alone with him.

(The BEAST grunts.)

BELLE (CONT’D) Are you so cold-hearted that you won’t allow a daughter to kiss her father goodbye?

Forever can spare a minute! (The BEAST moves towards her. Unexpectedly, HE opens the gate.)

BEAST

When this door closes, it will not open again!

MAURICE Belle, listen to me. It’s all right. Live your life. Forget me.

BELLE

Forget you? Everything I am is because of you. I love you Papa. And I will escape somehow.

BEAST I haven’t danced in years. I’d almost forgotten the feeling.

BELLE

BEAST My mother taught me, when I was a small child. We’d spend hours in the ballroom, waltzing and

laughing...
