• The Roaring Twenties is a phrase used to describe the 1920s, for a period of sustained economic prosperity.

• The phrase was meant to emphasize the period's social, artistic, and cultural excitement

• "Normalcy" returned to politics in the wake of World War I, jazz music blossomed, the flapper redefined modern womanhood

• Finally the Wall Street Crash of 1929 served to punctuate the end of the era, as the Great Depression set in.

• The era was further distinguished by several inventions and discoveries of far-reaching importance, unprecedented industrial growth, accelerated consumer demand and aspirations, and significant changes in lifestyle and culture.

Jackie Robinson would break the color barrier in baseball just 2 years later. Paige would enter the majors a year later with the Indians.

Paige was an amazing 42 years old before he pitched in his first Major League game. Considered to be by many the best pitcher that ever lived.

• Kansas City is world renowned for its rich jazz and blues legacy. Jazz in Kansas City was born in the 1920s and continues today

• The roots of Kansas City jazz are quite varied. Blues singers of the 1920s and ragtime music greatly influenced the music scene.

• Settings such as dance halls, cabarets and speakeasies fostered the development of this new musical style.

• In the early days, many jazz groups were smaller dance bands with three to six pieces. By the mid-1920s, the big band became the most common.
