• LT: Describe how acceleration over a period of time affects the velocity of an object.

• Discuss with your team which forces applied to a race car are responsible for its constantly changing state of motion around a circular track.

Terms associated with motion

• Position• Time• Distance• Speed• Velocity• Acceleration• Force• Mass

Definitions

• Position = location at a given time• Distance = change in position (e.g., 2 m)• Speed = (change in position)/time (4 m/s)• Velocity = speed & direction (+3m/s, -5m/s)• Acceleration = (change of velocity)/time

– change in speed implies acceleration– change in direction implies acceleration

Putting it all together

• Acceleration ramp (acceleration, time1)

• Constant velocity plane (distance, time2)• What is relationship between the acceleration

and time1 on ramp and the velocity on the horizontal plane?
