BELL QUIZ ANSWERS1) The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the nation for just $15 million.

2) The federal government forced the Native Americans to move from the South and the Midwest to reservations in Oklahoma. The 800 mile journey resulted in the death of 25% of the Native American population.

3) Manifest Destiny=The belief that it was the duty of the United States to expand westward to the Pacific Ocean and into Mexican and Native American territory. Greed would force the “Americanization” of Native Americans and the loss of their lands.

4) Americans settled in Texas because Mexico was selling large plots of land for a cheap price. The Texas Revolution was fought over the issue of slavery. Mexican law outlawed slavery in 1829. Americans in Texas did not want to abide by Mexican law so they revolted.

5) Paid Mexico $15 million dollars after the war with Mexico in 1848 for the present day states of California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming. Gold was discovered in 1848. Thousands of immigrants moved to California in 1849 to become rich. California became a state in 1850.
