Accounting is the information backbone of any business and is critical for the

successful management of any organization. Accounting data is used by managers to

measure financial performance, control operations and provide financial reports to the

investment community. All functional areas in a business (such as marketing, production,

human resources, finance and information technology) use accounting information in

their daily operations.

you might enjoy accounting if you like logic and order; you take a step-by-step approach to

problem solving; you analyze your options before making decisions; you did well in algebra

or statistics; you’re detail-oriented; you enjoy teamwork.

Economics is the study of choices. Unlike many other disciplines, studying

economics does not teach you specific answers to a given question, but rather how

to approach the question, and reasonable and rational methods for obtaining the

answer. If you like to question the status quo, economics may be for you.

you might enjoy economics if you have excellent math skills; you can work “in the gray;”

you did well in calculus or statistics; you like using logic and reasoning; you enjoy

finding connections among ideas; you can see the big picture; you rely on research and

data to make decisions; you’re always asking “what if.”

As the saying goes, “money makes the world go round.” The Finance major can prepare

you for a career in banking, of course, but can also lead to careers in industries as varied

as healthcare, energy and retail. As a Finance major, you will learn how businesses

develop financial plans, how they acquire and allocate their resources, and how the legal

environment affects decision-making. Finance is an area that allows rapid progression in

a wide range of careers. In fact, many CEOs have a finance background.

you might enjoy finance if you did well in algebra and statistics; you’re a whiz at excel; you

like to set long-term goals; you’re analytical by nature; people call you a problem solver;

Good decisions are made based on sound data and information. Most businesses

use Management Information Systems (MIS) to make forecasts, manage day-to-day

Even though UNC Charlotte is a large university, you don’t have to feel lost in

the crowd. Academic advisors do more than just help you register for classes.

They can help you choose a major based on your interests, abilities and career

goals. They can help you find support to ensure your academic success, including

referrals to the Writing Resources Center, the University Center for Academic

Excellence, tutoring or other university and college programs. They’re also a great

first stop if you have questions or concerns and don’t know who to ask.

professional polish to sell your skills in the marketplace. The Belk College’s

Student Center for Professional Development (SCPD) can help you develop your

“personal brand” to showcase your unique talents for future employers. You can

attend workshops on topics like professional business attire, networking, or email

etiquette to brush up on your business expertise. You can get help finding an

internship to explore potential careers and expand your resume. Or, if you don’t

really know what career you want to pursue, our Professional Success Coaches
