Dear Parents/ Carers,

WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to Term 3.We are looking forward to another busy term full of learning and fun. I

urge all families to download the school App to keep up-to-date with school events as well as links

to our school website. We have commenced the term with many new enrolments. A very special

welcome to new families who have commenced at Fairvale PS. Remember, we always love to see

new families join us on Thursday mornings for Parent Café—check out page 7— ‘Community News

with Miss Michelle and Miss Samira’.

STAFF NEWS

We have commenced the term with some staff changes. Mrs Chamoun has had to leave her position as Playgroup teacher

due to family reasons. We thank her for the wonderful contribution she has made to our school and wish her well.

Some other changes are as follows:

Ms Tanya Batten—returns to Fairvale PS in the role of Support and New Arrivals teacher

Mrs Baxter To—Beginning teacher support teacher

Miss Anita Ly—Support and EAL/D teacher

Mr Matthew Hopkins—Support teacher

Mrs Sandy Houlyace—Playgroup and support teacher

Ms Tina Garbin- School Administrative Officer

ROCKETING AROUND THE SCHOOL WITH MR PITT

K-2 EAL/D: This week I had the pleasure of visiting some of our EAL/D learners from Kindergarten to Year 2.

EAL/D stands for English as an Additional Language/ Dialect and at Fairvale PS we have experienced EAL/D

teachers who work with many children on a daily basis. I visited KB children during numeracy and they were

learning to count on by putting the number in their head and then we focused on fair share. On Wednesday I

visited one of the stage 1 groups who are learning about past and present—I felt really old when we looked

at pictures of old telephones! I also visited one kindergarten group. The children were saying, writing and

identifying some sight words from a familiar text. After that they used an ipad to practise the sight words. I

had a wonderful time visiting our K-2 EAL/D groups. Check out some photos in this edition of the newsletter.

PRINCIPAL’S FAIR MORNING TEA

At the end of last term, I had the privilege of attending the Term 2 Principal’s Fair Morning Tea (held

in the afternoon this time around!) The afternoon tea was for the lucky children who had their

names selected from the FAIR box during assembly time. I am proud to say that we know our rules

and can demonstrate appropriate behaviour. We continue to promote our FAIR rules on a daily basis

at Fairvale Public School. Big congratulations to Markes 3M, for winning the free pass from Marconi

Tennis Centre. A special thanks must go to Mrs Dean for organising the special occasion and for

providing so much yummy food! I had a great time hosting the afternoon tea. Well done everyone!

SCHOOL UNIFORM

We had such lovely weather during the holidays but since returning to school the weather has been very cold!

This means children wear warmer clothing to school. Please ensure the clothing worn is part of our school

uniform. Winter uniform at Fairvale PS is easy for everyone as both boys and girls wear tracksuits. We also

have a polo shirt girls can wear under their jumper. Visit the uniform shop to check out all winter uniforms.

FLU/ COLDS AND SICKNESS

As we know the colder weather brings sickness to most

households. It is very important that if anyone in your home is

not well that you visit the doctor. Some children have been

coming to school when they have been very sick—the signs are

easy—children are tired, lack energy, watery eyes, persistent

cough and a runny nose. I ask that you do not send your

children to school when they are sick. Be mindful to the other

children and staff in the class as well as the families it may

impact on down the track.

SCIENCE WEEK 2019—DESTINATION MOON

This year Science Week will be held from Thursday 8 August to Tuesday 13 August. The theme

this year is Destination Moon. At the end of last term, children received information regarding

the Science Project. This year all projects will be on display in the hall for 4 days to coincide

with Education Week. We hope that many children and/or families will submit a project.

Projects can be individually or family designed under one of the 3 areas: Art, Scientific Inquiry

or Technological Design. If you need any more information, check out the school app or please

speak to Mr Tran, Miss Mahendra, Miss Tran, Mrs El Rihani or Mr Pitt—Science and

Technology Project Team.

EDUCATION WEEK

As mentioned above next week is Education Week across New South Wales. The theme this year

is ‘Every student, every voice’. A flyer has been included in this edition of the newsletter and one

was also sent home this week. We hope that many families can come along to our various

events, held during the week. As I have mentioned on many occasions, the children are very

happy when families visit the school during Education Week.

Have a great fortnight,

Anthony Pitt

Take a break with Mrs Karam!

Each fortnight I visit a ‘break activity’ group.

Boys Basketball Team

This week I visited the boys basketball team. They

spent time playing a game and practising their

shooting, passing and working on some new skills. I

was thrilled to learn that they have not lost a game.

Well done boys! I’m excited to follow their journey

through to the end of the season and wish you all the

best for the finals. It was also great to see the boys

playing together as a team. I was impressed with how

well they communicated to each other! Keep it up!

Early Bird Reading

During Term 3 and Term 4 Early Bird Reading will be

changing to a TUESDAY morning. Please join us every

Tuesday morning in 5/6G’s classroom from 8:30am.

Miss David went to India

During the two week holidays, I visited the beautiful country

of India with 13 other Sydney teachers. We spent 3 days in a

Delhi school where we observed, co-planned and co-taught

with the teachers. It was a wonderful experience for the

students who got to see how Australian teachers teach. The

Indian teachers and students loved all the donated books

from Fairvale. During the trip, we also visited an organisation

called I-India. I-India provides children living on the street

with homes to live in and schools to learn in. We donated

school resources to the school, and cooked meals for the

students at the shelter. It was an unforgettable experience

that has made me realise how lucky we are to have what we

have, living in Sydney and teaching and learning at Fairvale

3– 6 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Last Wednesday students got to participate in our

Primary Athletics Carnival at Makepeace Oval. We

had such a fun day being outdoors! Students

competed in races, long jump, shot put, discus, high

jump and tabloid events with 55 students qualifying

for Zone. Well done to all students for trying your

best and cheering your peers on throughout the

day! These events are organised to give our

students the opportunity to showcase their talents

and enjoy being active. Thank you to all teachers for

encouraging students to attend the carnival. The

day would not have been possible without the

commitment of our teachers. Your dedication to our

students is appreciated!

As parents, homework can be a little overwhelming,

especially seeing how techniques have changed since

going to school yourself. OSHClub hosts HOMEWORK

CLUB, where your children can get support and help

with the difficult questions, see some of their friends

outside of school and also get to fill their bellies with

some Healthy Afternoon Tea. If you have any

questions, please come by the Hall and talk to the

friendly OSHClub staff.

On the last week of school, we decided to cook something

new each day! One of the days we made lamingtons that

were coated in yummy melted chocolate and coconut.

We also decorated cupcakes with a variety of decorations

such as moustache’s, flowers and sprinkles.

We also made chocolate crackles where each child was

involved in the cooking process.

We have had an exciting start to Term 3 with a few new

families starting their adventure with OSHClub! We would

like to Welcome Amir, Rassul, Antonio and Angelo and we

are excited to have you with us! If you are interested in

joining the OSHClub family, please come over to the hall for

some information or call us with any questions you may

have.

Last Monday 22 July, 2019, Miss Samira

and I attended a Club Grants presentation

at Marconi Club. The presentation was to

thank Fairfield RSL for donating $10,000

to Fairvale PS for Home Readers. The

cheque was presented by Mr Paul Bryant,

Senior Vice President—Fairfield RSL. We

need to also thank Miss Michelle who

applied for the special Club Grants.

Thank you Miss Michelle and Fairfield RSL!

ATTENTION PARENTS:

Have you heard about PaTCH?

PaTCH is a successful project to support volunteers who are prepared to act as parent classroom helpers. This program is being undertaken as part of the Early Action for Success Strategy.

If you are interested we would love to see you join the PaTCH program. An information note will be sent home very soon.

Last Thursday, Fairvale had their NAIDOC day celebrations with the Koomurri performance

and workshop group. NAIDOC is a time where we acknowledge and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander history, culture and achievements. During the day, students learnt about Aboriginal history, bush

survival, artefacts and weaponry. They had their faces painted, danced to Aboriginal songs, and learnt how to

throw a boomerang. We ended the day with a traditional smoking ceremony where teachers and students

were involved in the dancing. Thank you to everybody for an incredible day!
