Being evacuated was very exciting, but it was also strange and frightening. Most mothers did not go away with their children, and the children didn't know where they were being sent or who they were to live with.

Many children who were evacuated had a happy time with their host families and made lots of new friends at their schools in the country. Some people though, grown-up now, remember not being made quite so welcome, and finding it difficult to fit in.
