Hair and Make Up

Hair

The coloured streaks in Avril Lavigne’s hair inspired me to get green and pink hair extensions, which were then plaited into thin braids and pinned into their hair, using bobby pins. This was very quick thinking as we originally had the plan to use actual ready-to-clip coloured streaks but the store had run out. In the survey I carried out, a response to the question ‘What would you identify with Avril Lavigne’ was indeed this – i.e. the pink and green streaks. All in all, improvisation was key.In terms of Georgia’s hair, I had originally created a scene with a girl blowing up a balloon and when I saw this picture I immediately knew Georgia would fit the part.

The make up for Michaela, Georgia and Zoe was inspired by Beyonce’s countdown video which is still very heavy on the eye like Avril Lavigne’s, but with more colour, as opposed to just black. The reason this was chosen was because it was going to be shot under lighting and I didn’t want it to look too ‘grunge’. It was done by Sarah McNicolas who is actually a member of the cast. All in all, it was very well done.

Canon 5D Mark II

The camera was a Canon 5D Mark II. The filming was very successful and it was all due to this camera. There was a section where you could zoom, and a different section for the focus. Learning how to do use this was a bit of a challenge, but after I got the hang of it filming was much easier. Furthermore, the lens was a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.

On getting to the studio, there was a monitor on hand, had been set up so that we could all see how what I was filming would show on screen. It was also helpful because of the grid on the screen. This helped us with the rule of thirds and we could give characters ‘head way’ on screen. It also helped to ensure that characters were in the centre of the frame.

Feedback from the 11-sec

footage

I think the feedback I got from the video was mostly very positive. The issue people had with the video most was that the cuts were too quick but after I explained that that was the intended result, people agreed that the filming was indeed very successful. Some people also had an issue with the lighting and said that it needed to be brighter. I agree with this point of view. To be honest, the desired background was white, but I think the grey still ensures that all the focus is on the characters and not their surroundings. This is the reason why unlike what is very conventional to Avril Lavigne’s videos, there was no graffiti on the background. Furthermore, many people commented on the fact that there was a wide range of models. All in all, I am very pleased with the feedback.

Questions I’ve Been Asked After The 11-sec Video

• ‘I thought you were using a white background. Did you want it grey or did it come out like that?’ Well, the truth is I didn’t. I went in prepared to shoot in front of a white background (which I did) thinking the results would be just that – a white background. But apparently the lighting is set up differently. However, I am still extremely pleased with the results. If anything, the grey background makes the characters the centre of the focus.

• ‘How come the video isn’t narrative-based, like the story Avril Lavigne is telling through her song?’

I went for a concept-based video because I just thought it would be very cliché acting out the story Avril Lavigne was portraying through her lyrics i.e. a girl and a guy, the former being unable to voice out her ‘obvious’ feelings to the latter. The concept of the video is very ‘telling’ though. It is obvious that characters are acting out the actions that are being sung in the lyrics and I have gotten two people who gave positive feedback of the concept and this has been shown in the previous slide.

• ‘Is there going to be another round of filming? Will it be different from this?’ Yes there will be another filming session and this will be shot outside. This is another point that got mentioned in the feedback I got. Many people wanted to know if I was going to shoot some outside shots, preferably on a day the sun is shining. It is good to know that the audience have the same ideas I had from the beginning. I was always going to have two different settings – inside Uncle Mo’s studio, and one outside his studio. I have changed the plans a little bit now as I have decided to shoot on my road- Village Rd., Bush Hill, Enfield.

• ‘The costumes and make up are quite different from what I would have associated with Avril. Was this what you wanted?’

Again, I would say that for this video improvisation was key and things did not always go as I planned. Upon getting to the studio, we realised that the lighting available clash with the dark grunge look Avril goes for which generally looks like this:

The lighting would have been too bright and the colours may have stood up too stark against the complexions of the lighter skinned characters and may not have shown against the skin of the dark characters. However, hopefully with the outside shots we can implement a more grunge make up look as we would have natural light – The Sun!!!
