About the Course

Behaviour change has become a central objective of public health interventions over the last half decade, as the influence of prevention within the health services has increased. BCC programs have evolved over time, spawning a range of activities and approaches with multiple foci. It employs a systematic process beginning with formative research and behaviour analysis, followed by planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. This one week course is specifically designed for public health practitioners from State and Local governments and NGOs and the goal of this course is to provide an overview of BCC and help participants develop skills on effective health communication strategies.

At the End of The Course, Participants will be able to:

• Understand various types of communication• Understand Behavior Change Theories and Models of BCC including Stages of Change,

Theory of Planned Behavior, Social Cognitive Theory,Health Belief Model, Precede-Proceed Framework and the Social Ecological Model

• Situation Analysis / Needs Assessment, Social/ Epidemiological Assessment and Identification of “Key Behavior”

• Audience Segmentation : A Statistical Approach (Principal Component Analysis, Cluster Analysis with SPSS)

• Effective Message Development and Dissemination identifying key Channels, Medium, Concept testing/ Pretesting and Strategic Approach

• Develop a Strategy for Effective Planning, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation of a BCC plan based on data

Course Content

• Communications - Basic Definitions, Types including Advocacy Communications, Process and Channels

• Health Communications - BCC interventions using case studies and Current global scenario• Paradigm Shift to BCC - Theories and Models including Social Cognitive Theory, Health

Belief Model, Stages of Change, Theory of Planned Behavior, Precede- Proceed framework, Social Ecological Model

• Designing a BCC Plan: steps in a program cycle, the process of “message” development, Pretesting, Concept testing

• Strategy of Effective Planning including stakeholder identification, roles and responsibilities of stakeholders, implementation plan, Monitoring and evaluation of a BCC campaign

Methodology

The course will follow a participatory learning approach. It includes lecture discussions, case studies, group work, hands-on practical sessions, field work, and videos.

Participants

Tailored for personnel working as district and state health managers of NRHM, people interested in effective communication development from NGOs, media and academic organizations.

Venue

The program will be held at SRM University, Kattankulathur campus. Participants should be at the venue on the evening of April 22nd 2012 and plan on departing on the evening of the April of 28, 2012.

Participant Fee

The fee is INR 18,000. This includes tuition, charges for training material, 3-star hotel accommodation (twin sharing) with food arrangements of campus.

Course Director: Prof. Ch. Satish Kumar obtained his MA in anthropology and PhD from the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare in tribal health. He has held senior academic positions at the Indian Institute of Health Management Research, Jaipur and is currently the Dean of the School of Public Health at SRM University. He has extensive experience in behaviour change communication and cultural dimensions of health and disease. He has numerous publications to his credit on these areas in national and international journals.

Course Co-ordinator: Ms. GeethaVeliah, an expert in BCC, has a M.S. in Health promotion and community health education with over 12 years of experience in the field of BCC. She has worked with several non-profit organisations in the verticals of Tobacco Control, Chronic Disease Management as well as in the area of Reproductive Health in the USA. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor, School of Public Health, SRM University. She teaches Health Behaviour and BCC to the students of MPH.

Faculty

Ms. Geetha Veliah, an expert in BCC will be the faculty for managing the sessions of this workshop along with other experts from the field. She will support the expert speakers with inputs from all the related domains, relevant to the topic.

Prof. Ch. Satish Kumar will oversee the proceedings. He will share his experiences about BCC along with examples collected during his time in the field.

About the courses

MPH: The MPH degree is a full time 2 year residential program, with an equal emphasis on academics and hands-on experience. The first year of the course is devoted to class room learning to equip the students with an understanding of public health and its determinants. In the second year, they specialize and undergo a 6 month internship. The course seeks to ensure that the students, on completion, will become a public health professional.

M.Sc. Biostatistics and Epidemiology: This is a 2 year program which will equip students with the skills necessary to enable them to work across the range of areas covered by the Medical, Pharmaceutical and Health-related fields and Epidemiology. This programme serves to train health professionals to have in-depth knowledge of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and its application to important clinical and public health issues in developing countries as well as to be able to engage in scientific research. The programme is designed to train individuals in developing countries with a focused approach to regional problems and needs.

MS clinical trials: The need for rigorous evaluation of components of health care is increasingly recognised worldwide as a global health issue. This course is suitable for both those wishing to gain an overall understanding of trials before moving into the field, and those who have general or specialist experience in clinical trials and aim to broaden their role in the design, management, analysis and reporting of clinical trials. This is a 2 year program.

MBA-MPH: The MBA/MPH dual degree program is offered by the School of Public Health and School of Management SRM University, in collaboration with expert faculty of Haas School of Management and Berkeley School of Public Health University of California Berkeley adds a greater impact in the delivery of this dual degree program. It is an accelerated full-time program leading to the award of both the Management MBA and Public Health MPH degrees in 3 years including summer projects.

AFIH: The AFIH course is a 3 month duration course to create occupational health professional for the industrial world. The course involves training the students under 3 heads: practical, project work and industrial visits which ensures that the students will have all the academic and practical experience when they finish the course.
