Walking Bass Beginner Lesson (L#61,62)

Your Action Plan

1. To really get the idea of what a good walking bassline sounds and feels like you need to start listeningto the great upright bass players. This is a 'must do'exercise, as without listening in depth to these greatplayers you won't have any idea of what you'reaiming for and what a great walking bass line feelslike. At first I was very focused on electric bassplayers only, but when I discovered how much Icould learn from upright bass players I made them abig part of my study schedule.

Here's a list of fantastic players you should check out.

• Ray Brown• Eddie Gomez• Oscar Pettiford• Scott Lafaro• Ron Carter• John Pattitucci• Christian McBride• Paul Chambers

2. Next I want you to slowly work through the tutorialsmaking sure you can complete each exercise beforemoving onto the next. Concentrate on yourvisualization of each of the different intervals you'reusing during these exercise. You need to memorizethese different shapes to be able to transpose thisknowledge into different keys.

3. Once you can play all the exercises within one area ofthe fingerboard move into another area until you areas familiar with that one as the last. You want to bestriving for complete freedom upon the fingerboard.Being stuck in one area of the neck will severallyeffect your ability to play freely and provide dynamicsupport as a bass player.

4. Once you can complete all of the exercises presentedwithin the video it's time for you to start using theexercises over some common jazz standards. Don'tworry, I'm not trying to turn you into a jazz fan(although, it would be great for your development asa bassist, musician and I recommend not shuttingyourself off to any style of music), these exercises aresimply a fantastic way of developing the skills you'llneed to be a great bassist.

To start with look at standards such as Autumn Leaves and All The Things You Are.
