Holding the Drum Stick: A great quality of sound and approach to drum begins with the grip of the stick. Follow the checklist below to make sure you are gripping the drum stick correctly: ü Your thumb and index finger are forming the “fulcrum”, or the balance point on the stick (about 1/3 rd of the length of the stick from the bottom) ü Your other fingers are wrapped around the stick ü Your fingers are maintaining a relaxed grip at all times, loose and relaxed, never leaving the stick. Marching Snare Drum Technique for Beginners Hitting The Drum: -An even-stroke is initiated from the wrist, and is continued using all three muscle groups: arms, wrists, and fingers. -Be consistent in where the bead of the stick strikes the drum. -Play AGGRESSIVELY and “play through the head”. -Be aware of the 4 types of stroke and when to play them (graphic to the right). Playing Dynamics – “The Height System”: -In marching percussion, traditionally written dynamics (p, mp, mf, f, and ff) directly coincide with the number of inches the bead of the stick is in relation to the drum. - We typically use the numbers 1, 3, 6, 9,12, and 15 to represent this. pp p mp mf f ff 1 inch 3 inches 6 inches 9 inches 12 inches 15 inches How To Prepare For Auditions Know these Rudiments: -Paradiddle -Paradiddle-diddle -Flam Tap -Flam Accent AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: -Double-Stroke Roll Practice with a Metronome Keeping accurate and consistent time is extremely important in marching percussion, and a metronome helps us do just that.
