Principal’s Report

The last weeks of the term have seen much activity in the form of learning in classrooms and other spaces in the school. Students have demonstrated skills on local sporting fields, and students and teachers engaged positively in the various camps that have been happening at Bournda Environmental Education Centre and on the long walk to Green Cape Lighthouse.

Year 12 have now completed half of their Higher Certificate coursework, and Year 7 students are one term into their secondary education.

Parent/Teacher Evening was held recently and was an opportunity for staff, parents and students to share information about student progress. As always, parents/carers can contact the school on 6492 9000 with any questions and the Sentral Parent Portal is also a good source of information about student activities and assessments.

The school’s P & C team, a group of enthusiastic teachers and a student, Yasmin Powell, got together for a Working Bee on Saturday 30th March.

Students and school staff appreciate the spruce up of garden beds, despite the weather working against the group.

Future projects will focus on painting some of the school tables and seating – volunteers are always welcome – especially if they bring clear skies.

Term 1 has also seen some changes to staff at Bega High. The Special Education faculty has a new permanent teacher to replace recently retired Jane Griffin. Verity Kean has been appointed following a merit selection process and we welcome her to the staff.

Jessica Harris, while still closely associated with students and staff at Bega High, has taken up a positon as a Network Specialist Facilitator with the Department of Education for the next three years.

David Britton is continuing on as relieving Head Teacher Special Education and Alaura Beruldsen will be on his class for the remainder of 2019.

The school is in the process of replacing our long-serving Teacher Librarian, John Eastlake, following his retirement at the beginning of the year.

As promised, newly refurbished student toilets are now in operation. Girls and boys who were on hand to see the official opening of the doors were most impressed with the new look amenities.

Beega Hive School Introducing Bega High School’s new apiary! Four bee hives are being installed at the school’s agriculture farm.

Over the last year students and staff from the Support Unit have been working closely with the Bega Valley Beekeepers Association to learn all they can about beekeeping.

Now with the installation of beehives at the school those students will be able to continue their learning and cover all aspects of beekeeping.

A program will be run each term for up to 8 people, and, as it develops the opportunity to work with bees, will be opened up to all students at the high school.

The project has been supported by Bega Rotary, the Bega Valley Beekeepers and Bega Woodies Clubs. We are very excited to have an apiary at the school as it offers our students an invaluable opportunity to extend their skills and experience at the same time as contributing to pollinating our planet.

Anyone who would like to share bee knowledge with the students please feel free to contact David Britton at the

school. Also any donations of unwanted beekeeping equipment would be gratefully received.

Representative Swimming 2019 has seen talent in the pool for Bega High School. During February, we sent a team of 21 students to the Zone Swimming carnival In Narooma, which brought some fine results for our school, with Bega High ranking overall third place out of nine in the Eurobodalla Zone.

Congratulations to the following students for their individual scores:

Maximillian Navarrete - Second place, 16 years Boys

Indiana Cook - Third place, 14 years Girls

Kyarna Boulton – Second place, 15 years Girls

Tayla Smith – Second place, 16 years Girls

Luella Boulton - Third place, 16 years Girls

A group of 11 were then selected to travel to Dapto in March for the Regional competition.

The team had a great day despite the scorching 37 degree weather.

Congratulations to the 16 years Girls Relay Team who came second in the Freestyle event and will now progress to the State competition in April.

Harmony Day 2019 Twenty years ago, on 21 March 1999, Harmony Day was established to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity.

The spirit of the day is about sharing experiences and knowledge to create an environment of respect, belonging and friendship. Indeed, despite our cultural differences we share the same humanity.

Harmony Day unites Australians from all backgrounds as we joyfully come together to celebrate our most successful multicultural nation.

Students from Ms Perry’s and Ms Relton’s Stage 5 International Studies class, along with some students from their other classes, worked harmoniously on a wall collage of flags representing nations from around the world, which reflect the cultural heritage of many of our students.

The collage extended to messages of friendship, kindness and belonging to encourage all those students who walk by the wall each day.

Students also created a Welcome Tree, tracing their hands to make the leaves of the tree then writing Welcome in many different languages on each hand.

It was a colourful display symbolising how: we are one, but we are many and from all the lands on earth we come… and thus we welcome everyone.

As HSIE teachers, we have an opportunity to teach students about Australia’s rich and diverse cultural heritage and we are privileged to witness many interactions between our students. It is heartening to know that these interactions highlight our students’ tolerance and respect for one another.

The students who worked on this Harmony Day project were very keen to let all students know that they are valued members of, and so belong to, the Bega High School community.

We are proud of all the students who participated in our activities and in doing so made Harmony Day a success at Bega High School.

We also wish to acknowledge all the students who supported this day by visiting our Collage and Welcome Tree, reading and enjoying the messages and taking photographs.

Shalom, Peta Relton HSIE Teacher
