Principal’s Report The third week of term 3 is the designated week for celebrating all things in education. The theme for Education Week in 2019 is Every student, every voice and this edition of the school’s newsletter is just one way we demonstrate the skills our students have as they learn and develop as engaged global citizens.
The pages following illustrate so many skills and talents of our students, especially when it comes to engaging with students from other schools, other rural and regional areas and in different contexts.
As well, we have students displaying their artistic talents in the SCLC Art Show at the Civic Centre and we have had many student representatives seeking input from other students about their learning environment and working with students to build their teamwork capacity in year meetings.
This term also sees the final challenges for many HSC students who are putting the finishing touches to research projects, timber products, drama performances, and musical performances. They exemplify persistence, collaboration and the many different ways of voicing their goals, interests and achievement. We look forward to showcasing and viewing the results of these skills.

National Tree Day Friday 3rd August was a magnificent day for joining with Bega Valley Shire Council and BRAWL (Bega River and Wetlands Landcare Group) to plant trees as part of National Schools Tree Planting Day.
21 Bega High students from Years 7 -10 learnt about the importance of rehabilitating native species around the Bega River and the amazing work that BRAWL have achieved with the help of hundreds of volunteers and numerous community and school groups.
Students worked enthusiastically to plant, place water crystals, set up tree guards and water hundreds of plants at the eastern end of the racecourse.
A big thank you to Erin, at BRAWL and the following students: Sascha, Macey, Lara, Willow, Jade, Jarrah, Katelyn, Bodhi, Lily, Ruby, Neisha, Rachelle, Brodie, Bodin, Tyson, Dylan, Jazmyn, Lincon, Caitlin, Corey and Reese.

What is the NCSS Challenge? The NCSS Challenge is a programming competition open to all school students and teachers. The NCSS Challenge is unlike any other programming competition. We’ll teach you how to program as we go along, rather than expecting you to be an expert already. To find out more visit: What is the NCSS Challenge?
Why participate in the Challenge? As you may already know, the new National Curriculum includes Digital Technologies, which requires students from years 3-6 to learn a visual programming language, like Blockly, and students from year 7-8 to learn a general purpose programming language, like Python. By participating in the Challenge in 2018 you can give yourself and your students a head start.
When is the Challenge? Starting on 29 July and running for 5 weeks the Challenge teaches students how to program as they compete. In 2018 we had over 13,000 students (including some primary school students) and teachers compete in the Challenge from over 750 different schools across Australia and New Zealand.
How does the Challenge work? Each week notes and problems containing the information you and your students need to complete the week's programming challenges are released. For the first time this year students can earn points on all problems right up until the end of the competition. Giving you and your students more flexibility in how you participate in the Challenge.
The questions range in difficulty to allow beginners to progress at their own rate while still extending gifted students. The challenges will increase in complexity as more and more programming concepts are covered over the 5 weeks.
Students submit answers to these questions, which are automatically marked using a series of test cases that are designed to help guide the student to a working solution. < Insert personal greeting here> Students generally spend a few hours a week completing the questions, although this varies depending on which stream they are enrolled in.
How much does the Challenge cost? All-access subscriptions to Grok Learning cost $30 per student (for high school students) and $5 per student (for primary school students). Students can pay individually, or your school can be invoiced for them as a group. To find more information by visiting our pricing page.
The NCSS Challenge is run by Grok Learning, an education start-up from the University of Sydney. Between us we have decades of experience teaching students how to program.
