What is the big deal about Beethoven? It is an inspiration! Why do you think Beethoven was important? Ludwig Van Beethoven was born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany. Family Beethoven's Father (Johann Van Beethoven) was a court singer (tenor) Ludwig’s Grandfather (also Ludwig Van Beethoven) was a “Kappelmiester”. He was the best musician in all of Bonn Germany. Beethovens father started teaching Ludwig music when he was very young, and was not a nice man. Ludwig would get punished for playing wrong notes, or hesitating to play. He would stand on a stool to reach the piano keys! Ludwig’s father “billed” his first performance in 1778, and advertised him as “little son of six years” What do you think “billed” means? How old was he actually? Why? In 1781, at the age of 10, Beethoven withdrew from school to study music full time with Christian Gottlob Neefe, court organist. What is an organist? Ludwig submitted a formal request to be the assistant court organist for Neefe, and despite his youth he was hired. How old was he when he started to support his family? Shortly after, His mother died in 1787, and he was very sad for a a long period of time afterwards. Beethoven at 19 years old composed his first masterpiece as a dirge for " Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II” What is a dirge? In 1792, Ludwig left Bonn and went to Vienna, to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn. Ludwig made a name for himself as a virtuoso pianist who had amazing improvisation skills! In 1800-1805, Beethoven wrote masterpieces, including Symphony No. 1, “Six Sting Quartets”, and the “Eroica Symphony”. In 1796, Beethoven experienced the first signs of deafness; "I must confess that I lead a miserable life. For almost two years I have ceased to attend any social functions, just because I find it impossible to say to people: I am deaf.
