The Oxjam Beeston Team look back on another fantastic music festival, when 90 volunteers from the local community came forward to help raise an incredible £26,460 for Oxfam’s international emergency aid and development work.

The amazing total raised by Oxjam Beeston could fund all of this: • Four million cubed steel water tanks with roof and liner to provide clean, safe water for a community. • Build 250 toilets • Construct 4 water points • Empower 100 women to know their rights and develop confidence • Train 50 beekeepers • Care for 200 mums and babies • Twelve family tent shelters, each for 8 people • Train 10 volunteers to identify & challenge violence against women • Buy: 240 solar lights, 5 water

testing kits, 40 goats, 200 Oxfam buckets, 500 sachets of rehydration salts, 100 mosquito bed nets, 164 bars of soap and 50 chickens!

That’s quite a shopping list, and a reminder that Oxjam Beeston brings people together to celebrate local music, whilst also raising vital funds for people in communities, worlds away from this leafy borough, living in extreme poverty.

Volunteer coordinators Darren Bailey and Steve Barton were thrilled with how October’s big festival Takeover Day went: “We had a fantastic response from over 90 local residents wanting to do their bit – running stages, technical support, collecting donations, selling raffle tickets, setting up and generally running around - basically anything that was needed to make the day run as smoothly as possible, whilst also enjoying the

festival. People had such a good time and we anticipate seeing many of them again next year!”

Takeover Manager Heather Greenan said: “With thousands of festival goers, 16 stages and 127 bands/performers to coordinate in 12 hours, quite simply Takeover couldn’t have happened without such a stellar group of volunteers! We’re also hugely indebted to our Headline Sponsors The Star Inn, Beeston, as well as stage sponsorship from local businesses: J Flynn Optician, CP Walker, and Foster Industrial."

And there are many others who provided professional support: Volunteer Action Broxtowe, Breeze Magazine, PN Design, Touch of Frost Photography, University of Nottingham Mixed Reality Lab, Beeston Oxfam Books and Music, and a wonderful band of sound

engineers.

The Oxjam Beeston phenomenon

Beeston has been hosting this amazing, much loved event since 2011 and has raised record amounts of money, mainly through the big Takeover, but other events too. The running total of money raised for Oxfam stands at over £137,000!

Visit oxjambeeston.org or social media for details of this year’s festival. Whether you’re a volunteer, performer, sponsor, supporter, or music fan – Oxjam Beeston needs you! Let's continue to raise funds for communities in extreme poverty.

The 29th Annual Duck race took place on Wednesday 1st January 2020 at Manor Park Toton.

The Mayor of Broxtowe councillor Michael Brown started the race by releasing 1500 plastic ducks into the River Erewash. They floated down the river and were caught at the bridge approximately 600 yards downstream. The owners of the first 10 ducks crossing the winning line received a prize.

The 2020 Duck race was a resounding success and attracted a crowd of around 2000 people including lots of family pets. Mulled wine donated by The Nags Head at Borrowash and mince pies, donated by Tesco at Toton, were served along with tea and coffee. We had the usual doughnut stand

and this year, for the first time, we had hot dogs on sale with the bread rolls also donated by Tesco at Toton. There were tombola and chocolate tombola stalls, courtesy of Thornton’s. There was a prize every time cuddly toy stall, loved by the little ones. In addition, we had a raffle for a giant Pooh Bear and Tigger, again donated. An opportunity to ‘adopt’ a retired duck and festive music ensured that there was a great atmosphere.

Prior to the main race we had our corporate race. Local businesses donated £25 to sponsor a duck or £35 for two. In the corporate race we had 43 ducks and the winner was UCIG at Long Eaton, who won a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates. Prizes for the Race were donated by local business and the race was sponsored by Michael Keys Garage at Long Eaton.

We raised £4,4019, up on last year by a superb £1,000, all of which

will be spent for the benefit of local older people. Angela Barnes, Fundraising Networker for Age UK Derby and Derbyshire said “The Duck Race has become a great local event and we are so grateful, both to Broxtowe Borough Council for allowing us to use the park and to the Mayor who presented the prizes. We are especially grateful to our sponsors, Michael Keys Garage at Long Eaton, to all the businesses who continue to support us with both the corporate race and for providing the prizes for the main race, to all our volunteers and to the local people of the surrounding area who always turn out to support us.”

Next year will be our 30th Duck Race so we will be looking to do something really special!

On December 20, Pupils from Beeston Rylands Junior School got stuck into a tree and bulb planting event. A mixture of native bulbs (wild daffodils and English bluebells) were planted, plus the students took part in a litter pick as part of the Council’s involvement with National Tree Week 2019 and the Borough’s ‘Clean & Green’ initiative.

All the pupils are part of an eco- class who meet to discuss the environment issues.

Hugh Turrell from the Council briefly discussed the importance of tree planting.

Why do we need to plant trees? What are their benefits?

• To breath, they take in excess carbon dioxide (CO2) from our atmosphere and convert it into oxygen for us to breath. Trees are vital in ensuring that our atmosphere remains oxygen rich. Trees act as lungs for our planet.

• To help with pollution, trees act as living filters, in which they filter out all the nasty pollutants in our air.

• Trees provide homes for a large amount of the UK’s wildlife.

• They are shelter, shade and flood defences.

• Trees are vital to our existence; we need them for oxygen and good health and even more so now to help combat climate change.

• Trees provide food for nature.

School children helping to keep Broxtowe clean and green

It can be hard to digest the information about the climate crisis, but something worth focussing on is how amazing things could be if we embraced a new vision.

What if our streets were filled with children playing because our public transport and electric car sharing schemes were so effective that no-one needed private cars anymore? What if restaurants grew their own vegetables? What if neighbourhoods picked fruit from the trees and pressed it into juice to share out? What if supermarkets composted their out of date food and let the public take the compost away to use?

It’s all possible.

In fact, the electric car sharing scheme actually exists in Nottingham right now - there are 20 points and 9 of them have fully electric cars. Give it an “ecosia” (it’s a search engine that plants trees) and see for yourself!

The climate crisis affects us all so it’s up to us all to help out. If we work together as communities, we can share our skills, resources and ideas but as well as this, we’ll be reminded that everything we need to be happy is right here in front of us – it just needs bringing back to life – nature, healthy food, clean air and real connection with one another.

Have you got an idea that you think could help? Would you like to join an existing group? This issue is too important to think that someone else will take care of it. Who’s in? You can find BEAT on Facebook.

The arrival of a rare wetland bird in December, not seen at Attenborough Nature Reserve since 2005, has helped to set a new record for the number of bird species seen at this much loved site in one calendar year.

A couple of birdwatchers spotted the small bird, a Slavonian grebe, on Coneries Pond, just metres from the café balcony on a Tuesday afternoon in December. Initially identified as a similar looking black-necked grebe, it was later confirmed to be a Slavonian grebe by manager of the Nature Centre, Tim Sexton.

Slavonian grebes are one of the UK’s rarest nesting birds, which nest on just a handful of lochs in the North of Scotland. Outside of the summer breeding season they can be found out to sea and within coastal estuaries, however they are scarce winter visitors to Nottinghamshire, with just a couple of individuals recorded in the county each year.

This arrival has caused quite a stir as there hasn’t been a record at Attenborough in 14 years. The arrival of this grebe has brought the grand total of bird species recorded in 2019 to 168, one more species than the previous record of 167, set in 2016. The Slavonian grebe joins the record count of resident birds, migrants and rarities spotted at Attenborough this year, including three cattle egrets, purple sandpiper and a first for the

reserve, a Caspian gull.

Attenborough Nature Reserve is a nationally important site for wildlife and provides a lifeline both to people and wildlife. In November 2019 Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust launched their Attenborough Nature Reserve Lifeline Appeal to buy and secure the future of the site and have so far raised over £900,000 toward the £1 million target.

Rare bird spotted at Attenborough Nature Reserve Recognition for clean championIn December, the Mayor visited Mark Topham who is a service user of Broxtowe Day Service at The Barncroft Centre, Beeston. When on his way to the centre, Mark always stops and collects litter on his route. In recognition of his hard work the Mayor presented a certificate of special recognition, along with a Clean and Green hi-vis jacket, litter picker and pair of gloves to help continue his work. Clean and Green is a campaign run by Broxtowe Borough Council as part of an initiative to make Broxtowe a cleaner place.Mark has been a true champion of the Clean and Green initiative and it is hoped that he continues his great work!

In December 2019, Brooklands Primary School in Long Eaton were busy collecting food and toiletries as part of their annual drive to support The Canaan Trust charity.

Sophie McHale (Class Teacher and PSHE Lead), said the school’s collection ran over a few weeks to provide as much help as possible to the Long Eaton based charity who provide temporary accommodation for the homeless

and food aid in Derbyshire.

She said, “The children have been learning about The Canaan Trust and the fabulous work that they do for our community during assembly time. We encouraged the children to understand that the charity relies solely on donations and good will, and without these, they cannot continue to change lives.

“This year we have managed

to collect an entire carload of supplies totalling 9 crates of goods. The Trust informed us that our donations were dispersed across local families within the area, just in time for Christmas.”

Sophie says this is the second year the school has made the collection. “We will continue to support The Canaan Trust in any way that we can. We are, as always, extremely proud of our amazing Brooklands community. We have really made a difference.”

Pupil Raife Knibbs (year 1) said, “It is a brilliant idea to collect for The Canaan Trust and I was super happy to help load all of the food into the car”. When asked what he hoped would happen to the donations, he said “I hope that some people will have a better Christmas because of us”.

“I hope that some people will have a better Christmas because of us” said Raife Knibbs(Yr1)

Kirsten O’Neill, Interim Head

Teacher at the school said that the collection reflected the kindness of the school’s community, “After learning about homelessness during assembly, the children felt that they would like to do something to help. It has been wonderful to see them so motivated and actively making a difference. We are so proud of our community, parents and children, who have taken time at this busy time of the year to support The Canaan Trust. Many thanks to everyone who supported this worthwhile cause.”

Pictured below: The school children help to load all 9 crates of their collected goods into a car for delivery to the charity.

Foodie Trevor Langley of Long Eaton visits and reviews local restaurants. This month he visited Latino on Chilwell Road, Beeston.

DINING OUT - LATINO Since opening in 2002, Latino restaurant quickly gained a reputation for providing exceptional dining experiences. The bar area is perfect for meeting friends and to peruse the menus, prior to dining.

Appetizers and starter choices include Marinated Olives, through Mozzarella Tomatoes & Basil, to Deep Fried Whitebait and Oven-Baked Garlic Mushrooms. Main courses have Chicken, Fish, Pasta and Salad dishes, in several adaptations and styles, plus Chef’s Specials.

Greeted by Tony (Proprietor), all visitors and diners are warmly

welcomed, with the pristine table settings and ambience adding to the dining experience. A chosen starter of Smoked Salmon, which was very flavoursome and had good texture and presentation. The main course selected, of Sea Bass (with vegetables), in lemon, garlic, white wine, cream and tarragon, came being cooked and presented to perfection. The tastes and textures in this dish complement each other, wonderfully, a huge compliments to Chef! For dessert the Homemade Tiramisu certainly does not disappoint, with the blended flavours doing justice to this popular selection. Announcement of the new Broxtowe Youth Mayor for the next 12 months.

A 17-year-old from Beeston has been elected as Broxtowe’s new Youth Mayor. Grace Li, from Nottingham Girls High School, was voted in at a recent meeting of Broxtowe Youth Voice.

Grace takes over from outgoing Youth Mayor, William Mee.

Grace said: “As youth mayor, I will strive to give voice to young people and bring forth change in our local community. I strongly believe that I will meet the challenges of a position like that of Youth Mayor with both enthusiasm and maturity.”

Grace’s first official engagement was the Council’s Christmas Council Meeting on 18th December, where she met the Mayor of the Borough, Councillor Michael Brown and other Councillors.

The Youth Mayor will also be invited to be non-voting members of important committees like the Environment and Climate Change Committee to help ensure that the views of young people are represented.

For more information or if you'd like to join Broxtowe Youth Voice, please contact Nottinghamshire County Council.

It was Valentine's Day that the story of Torvill and Dean truly turned into something special, a fairytale on ice in Sarajevo. WENDY COOPER recalls events leading up to the 4.28 seconds when the city of Nottingham and the nation fell in love with the dynamic duo in February 1984 and what happened next.

They said it could never happen. But then it did.

On the day Cupids arrow traditionally launches countless romantic encounters, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean hit the bullseye with ice skating judges and charmed a British audience who have been enchanted by the

Nottingham pair ever since.

For the digital generation with a choice of multi-channel media networks to satisfy their seemingly perpetual viewing appetite, it is difficult to convey the excitement generated by this young couple's performance at the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo almost 40 years ago.

Holding off challenges from Japan and East Germany, staging such a prestigious event was a major coup for what was then Yugolsavia's capital, heralding a financial boom in tourism for the city until the devastation of the Bosnia War laid waste much of its historic architecture and slaughtered thousands of its indigenous population.

There had been an inauspicious start to the tournament, too, when the Olympic flag was hoisted upside down at the opening ceremony but that did not dampen the spirits of competitors or spectators, especially the huge

television audience that awaited back home in eager anticipation of Torvill and Dean's appearance in the ice dancing finale.

No that the pair were exactly unknowns. Far from it.

They had already won gold medals at both the European and World Championships and since 1978, had never been beaten in the British Figure Skating Championships which were held annually on their 'own manor', the Nottingham Ice Stadium, today the Ice Arena or National Ice Centre which can be accessed by Bolero Square. More later on Maurice Ravel's musical composition.

In fact, it was at the old rink that Torvill was first bitten then utterly smitten by the ice skating bug. Born in Clifton, she attended Clifton Hall Girls' Grammar School, situated in Clifton Village...

Hyundai Motor UK have just announced to MotorMartin the pricing and specification of their new i10, the latest generation of the multi award winning city car, which goes on sale on the 18th January.

Arriving at its 3rd Generation, the all new i10 is a comprehensive upgrade over previous models, with substantial changes regarding exterior and interior design, equipment and driving dynamics. In fact, it could be said to be a brand new model from the

ground up offering technology, segment leading connectivity and safety features and even a full 5 seat configuration when many in its segment only offer 4 seat models.

Evolving from the previous generation the i10 has increased proportions, with its visual stance improved by a lowered roof (20 mm), wider body (20 mm) and longer wheelbase (40mm). These enhancements can be complemented by newly-designed optional 16-inch alloy wheels,

resulting in what Hyundai describe as an energetic and agile look.

Further changes have occurred with the i10’s stylish interior design repositioning the model when compared to the previous generation, without losing any of the i10’s reputation for real world convenience and usability. Indeed, the entry level S specification is no longer available meaning that you can now enjoy the increased specification of SE trim at the starting point of the i10 range.

Hyundai have shared the following information with MotorMartin regarding the latest engine and specifications of the all new i10:

The i10 SE 1.0 MPi 67PS 5 speed manual is available from £12,495 offering a fantastic level of standard equipment including DAB radio, 3.8” display, Bluetooth, air conditioning, electric windows, leather steering wheel and gear lever, electric mirror adjustment and cruise control. Standard safety equipment includes

Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Driver Attention Alert (DAA), High Beam Assist (HBA) and Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS) with integrated Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning System with Lane Keep Assist (LKAS) and eCall, which can automatically dial emergency services in the event of a serious accident.

Customers looking for connectivity and style can choose the i10 SE Connect trim, starting at £13,495 for the i10 SE Connect 1.0 MPi 67PS 5 speed manual. Specification enhancements over the SE include 15” alloy wheels, an 8” touchscreen display audio, rear view camera, subscription free Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, Bluetooth with voice activation and 2 rear speakers. The i10 SE Connect is also available with a 1.2 MPi 84PS four cylinder engine, with both available as a 5 speed manual, or a new 5 speed automated manual transmission.

Go big... Go HyundaiMotorMartin

Offering even further equipment, the i10 Premium 1.0 MPi 67PS 5 speed manual costs from £14,495 and includes 16” alloy wheels, halogen bi-function headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, front fog lamps, privacy glass, heated front seats and steering wheel. The i10 Premium is also available with a 1.2 MPi 84PS four cylinder engine, with

both the 5 speed manual, or new 5 speed automated manual transmission available.

Customers choosing the Premium specification can add the optional Tech Pack offering a wireless charging pad for compatible devices, 8” touchscreen navigation with Bluelink® telematics, giving owners the ability to locate the

vehicle via GPS, LIVE services and additional navigation services such as the ability to send navigation instructions via smartphone and remotely lock the vehicle. The Tech Pack is a £1000 option on Premium models. There’s even a choice of ten colours!

All New i10 models come with Hyundai’s industry leading 5 Year

Unlimited Mileage Warranty, Roadside Assistance package, 5 Year Annual Health Check, and 12 Year Anti Corrosion Warranty.

Beeston photographer Philippa Dytham-Double of Double Image Photography has picked up one of the consumer prizes in a prestigious industry competition for portrait photography.

Philippa, who owns the portrait photography business in Beeston, picked up one of only 46 consumer awards at the recent Xperience group awards ceremony.

Mrs Dytham-Double was selected out of more than 9000 images in the 2019 Xperience Portrait Awards, Mrs Dytham-Double said she was “delighted” to have been selected by real consumers. ‘It’s really important that customers like the photographs I take and it was

lovely that this image, which I was very proud of, was selected for an award’.

Xperience chief trainer Mark Cleghorn, developed the awards to challenge members of The Xperience Group, made up of over 100 photographic studios from across the UK and Ireland to make the photographers ‘step outside their comfort zones and get even more creative with every day clients’.

Mr Cleghorn said: “We should always inspire our clients with creativity, lighting and of course the perfect expression, not forgetting our mastery of light and imagination. The standard of entries this year was exceptional, and I am looking forward to how we can move trends and style even further in the 2020 awards.

Claire said that this result demonstrates to families the commitment the school shows to its pupils. “This league table is a clear indication of the progress

children make during their time with us at Beeston Fields. The staff and children, the supportive families, governors, The Flying High Trust and the wider community have played such an important role in this result. The staff have been unanimous in creating the strong Beeston Fields Family ethos and providing high quality teaching and learning opportunities for all our children.

Homeowners looking to spruce up abodes in the new year can look to these three tips from home improvement experts at Stormclad.

Managing director, John Evans at home improvement company Stormclad, said: “There’s never been a better time to make those necessary home improvements than at the start of a brand new year. Our specialists at Stormclad have compiled a list of three easy tips to spruce up your property.”

1. New doors and windows

Brand-new doors and windows can really give homes a new lease of life and there are a range of styles on the market to give homes a unique

and enhanced look, there are so many door options and Stormclad has a range of flexible finance options for payment.

2. Conservatory refurbishment

As a prime living space that can be enjoyed all year round, conservatories are always worth investing in. As many older styles of conservatories don’t benefit from modern materials and construction techniques, they suffer problems with temperature control, leaking gutters and roofs and damp. Simple, economical options such as - window replacement, high-performance glass, door and roof replacement.

3. Maximise space

Making the most of space on your property is easy – a veranda can extend your property and allow you to make the most of outside space. All Stormclad verandas come with a 10-year guarantee and have a life expectancy of up to 25 years.

Three easy tips for sprucing up your home for the new year

Why choose UK Renewable Heatng?

· Free domestic property survey – no charge to you · No obligation – you’re under no obligation to proceed · 7 years of RHI payments – Transferred directly into your bank account · Up to £12,500 available to YOU now from Ofgem · We only use Mitsubishi Ecodan Air Source Heat Pumps · Most efficient system available in the UK · Designed specifically for the UK climate requirements · System works in temperatures as low as -15°C to -25°C

How much will I save?

Realistically this depends on the individual property and it’s heating and hot water requirements. This is why we complete a FREE honest survey to give you accurate information, you can then

determine if the Air source Heat Pump is going to be financially beneficial to you.

How does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

Mitsubishi Ecodan Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems and hot water in your home. An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside.Air Source is also a great way to reduce gas bills depending on your usage.

Ground-breaking renewable technology

Air Source Heat Pumps are a renewable technology that converts energy from the air into heat. It delivers very efficient, low-cost, energy-saving heating and hot water all year round…

My name is Amanda Harris and I am a Will Writer based in West Bridgford. I am a member of the Society of Will Writers and have been producing Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Funeral plans for the past 9 years. I love my job and I am committed to ensuring that my clients receive the services that they need.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows an appointed person (Attorney) to act on your behalf and make decisions if you are unable to.

Q - “I don’t need an LPA because my next of kin can make important decisions on my behalf”

A - Not true. No-one can act on your behalf or make decisions on your behalf if they have not been legally authorised to do so.

Q - “My Will has appointed executors, so they’ll be able to make decisions on my behalf.”

A - Not true. A Will is entirely separate to an LPA. Executors appointed in a Will only have the power or authority to distribute your estate as requested and in line with your Will, on death. They have no authority to make decisions on your behalf during your lifetime.

Q - “I don’t need an LPA until I become elderly and of ill health”

A - Not true. An LPA can be made by anyone over the age or 18 who

has full mental capacity. Someone may lose capacity instantly following an accident and none of us know what the future holds.

Q - “Getting an LPA is expensive”

A - The cost of registering an LPA yourself is £82 per document. My fees are £500 per pair of LPA’s. In comparison, if you fail to make an LPA and lose capacity, your family will be left with no other option but to apply for a Deputyship Order, which will cost significantly more.

Q - “We have joint bank accounts so we don’t need LPA’s”

A - Not true. If one partner loses mental capacity then by law the bank has to freeze the joint account until they receive a valid LPA or deputyship order. This can be stressful and costly for the family.

Lasting Powers of Attorney… Myth Busting Funding set to benefit NottsVoluntary and community groups across Nottinghamshire can now apply for the latest round of grants as part of the County Council scheme to support grassroots projects. The Local Improvement Scheme is helping local communities to be more vibrant and sustainable by providing grants to local organisations which seek to make a difference in the local community and contribute towards making Nottinghamshire a great place to live, work and visit.Groups can now apply for capital funding of up to £30,000 at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/lis. The closing date for this round of funding is 28 February 2020 with £1.4m available. The funding can be provided for physical things like signs, equipment or buildings, but not running costs. Applicants will need to demonstrate that their projects can deliver tangible, long term benefits to the community. In fact, 202 projects have so far benefitted from more than £2m worth of capital funding. For more information and to find out about eligibility visit: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/lis

February should be a mixture of rain, frosts and milder spells. Soil preparation will pay dividends and sowing seeds will give you and the family a positive view of early growth.

Beds and Borders Spring bulbs such as crocus, winter aconite and snowdrops should be emerging in protected areas of the garden. The pink propeller blooms of cyclamen corms will also be creating a delightful warm glow to areas that are sheltered from the cold. They like rich well drained soil and will easily self-seed if the conditions are just right.

Millions of gardeners have realised that buying almost fully grown plantlets in early summer ready to plant out in patio pots, hanging baskets and garden borders is not the cheapest way of buying plant material. The trend nowadays is to buy seedlings or plug plants early in the new year and grow these plants in pots indoors until they are ready to plant out in the garden.

Lawncare Don't walk on the grass while it is frozen or frosted. Crushing the frozen blades of grass results in a burn that turns brown and the footsteps will be visible for weeks. In mild spells why not cut the grass to keep the lawn looking trim.

Your lawn care plans for 2020 After the winter, moss is prevalent on many lawns. Now is a great time to treat with proprietary lawn feeds that include a moss control or if all that sounds daunting call Greener Gardens, we complete a Free no obligation survey. We work with you, understanding your aspirations to identify work that can be completed to create the lawn you desire.

It’s not too early to think about your lawncare plans for the year, but if nothing else get the mower blade sharpened.

Grow your own If weather conditions don’t allow you to get outdoors, then use the time wisely to draw up your plans

for the year, and order or buy seeds ready to sow when they do.

Many gardening books tell you to sow seeds of parsnip in February because they take a long time to germinate.

Buy your favourite varieties of seed potato from your local garden centre before they sell out. Set them out in a single layer at the bottom of a seed tray and keep them somewhere in good light that is cool and frost-free.

Patio Tubs & Baskets Keep dead-heading winter pansies and feed occasionally with a liquid All Purpose Plant Food when the weather is mild.

Paths and Drives Clean up any green mould growth

on the patio slabs, brickwork or walls with one simple treatment with Patio Magic! Just water or spray on during a dry spell – the active ingredient works for several months to give great control of mould, lichen and algae.

Patio Magic! is quick and easy to use without the need for hard work. Just dilute the concentrate in a watering can and thoroughly wet the affected surface, then simply leave it to dry. If that sounds hard work Greener Gardens can do it for you.

Garden Diary is written by John Draper of Greener Gardens, your local independent BASIS Lawn specialist. For help with all aspects of your lawn call 0115 837 8439 or visit www.greenergardens.co.uk.

Lots to talk about at Prograss...At the time of writing this we have just started up again after our Christmas/New Year break and are doing the important Winter lawn treatments which is all about applying fertiliser products that deal with any moss that has spored and diseases that have appeared over this period in the damp, wet, mild conditions. These products also supply the nutrients required to condition the soil at this time of the year. It is essential to get the lawn prepared and in shape so that we can then apply the nice lively fertilisers in the Spring that are required to get the lawn looking its best for 2020. The Winter treatment also prepares the lawn for any mechanical work (aeration and scarification) that may be booked in for the Spring.

We now also have in place an additional easy payment scheme that is proving very popular which enables a customer to spread the

cost of a years lawn work with 12 monthly payments with no interest.

Based in Bingham and offering superior attention to detail, Prograss are your local independent lawncare company and if you would like a no-obligation lawn health check and quote, now is the ideal time to get Prograss in to sort any problems your lawn may have to get it in peak condition for the coming season. Contact us on 01949 837367 or visit pro-grass.com.

Volunteers from the Friends of Bramcote Ridge celebrated their 20th anniversary recently, doing what they do best by planting hazel trees and wildflower bulbs at the Green Flag award winning Bramcote Ridge Local Nature Reserve.

The group was joined by the Practical Conservation Volunteers and the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Michael Brown to plant the trees in an open area within the woodland. In the future, they will be managed as traditional hazel coppice, providing an important resource for local wildlife. The trees were provided by Broxtowe Borough Council as part of its Clean and Green initiative.

Around each tree, a drift of wildflower bulbs, including snowdrop, bluebell and wild daffodil were also planted, which will further add to the attractiveness of the woodland for both wildlife and visitors.

Helene Laanest, from the group

said: “It was a pleasure to have the Mayor with us on Sunday. We appreciate all the support we get from Broxtowe Borough Council and the Practical Conservation Volunteers. Twenty years for a volunteer group such as ours is a great achievement and the site has seen a lot of improvements over the years. Bramcote Ridge is a lovely space and we hope the Ridge will continue to attract a dedicated team who care about its' conservation. Newcomers of all ages are welcome.”

The Friends of Bramcote Ridge formed 20 years ago to help preserve and improve this

important site, for wildlife and local people. In total 20 hazel trees were planted to commemorate this remarkable milestone, which also coincides with the completion of a number of improvements carried out on the site thanks to a funding award of £20,000 from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Throughout 2019 a number of improvements were made, including a wheelchair and buggy friendly path to the play area, improvements to a stepped access from Thoresby Road and resurfacing of an accessible path to a viewpoint overlooking

Wollaton Hall.

Since forming in 1999, the Friends have maintained a membership of around 50 or so local people, with up to 20 members turning up for their monthly work parties to engage in practical activities including managing wildlife habitats, clearing litter, erecting and maintaining bird nest boxes, and maintaining paths and accesses. The Group have held the prestigious Green Flag Award for the last 11 consecutive years, a real testament to their hard work and enthusiasm.

Both The Friends of Bramcote Ride and The Practical Conservation Volunteers are always on the look out for new volunteers. To become a member of The Friends of Bramcote Ridge, visit www.bramcote-ridge.org.uk. If you would like to become a Practical Conservation Volunteer, please email: [email protected] or call 01332 864581.

Leading Nottinghamshire developer Barratt and David Wilson Homes has donated £1,000 to the Trent Vale Community Sports Association as part of its Community Fund scheme.

As part of its efforts to support the communities close to its developments, Barratt and David Wilson Homes has made the contribution towards much-needed renovations of Trent Vale Community Sports Association’s clubhouse and grounds.

At the nearby Barratt Homes at Beeston development, the housebuilder is currently building a number of two-bedroom apartments as well as a range of two to four-bedroom homes.

The Association’s site is used by Beeston Football Club, providing a training ground for 250 of the volunteer-run club’s members. The club has recently added four girls teams as well as an adults team and an additional boys team, serving as a place where members can socialise and exercise together.

The redevelopment of the derelict club house at Trent Vale will support significant growth in Beeston Football Club in the next

five years. The total number of players will increase to more than 350 and the club will grow from 17 teams now to 28, including two disability teams, a new adult women’s team, an additional men’s team as well as more girls’ and boys’ teams.

Chris Southgate, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Midlands, said: “We are delighted to make our Community Fund donation to the Trent Vale Community Sports Association.

“As a leading homebuilder, we aim to engage with and support the local areas around our developments as much as possible and by making this donation we hope to help the Association continue their fantastic work.”

Leroy Payne, Trustee for Trent Vale Community Sports Association, said: “This is a fantastic contribution from Barratt and David Wilson Homes which will help make our project a reality. Our aim is to give everyone in the community the opportunity to play football in a positive and supportive environment.

“The new club house at Trent Vale will enable us to do that bringing together boys, girls, people with disabilities and adult players, all representing Beeston. It’s going to be great. Thank you for your support.”
