BEES AT ARBOR ACRES 2020
It’s been a strange year in the bee yard…… well maybe not strange, but definitely different than our first year.
Having been blessed with a first harvest of 200 pounds of honey, we were disappointed to have only harvested 120 pounds this year. How could that be with more hives in 2020?
Swarms
While a naturally occurring event in the life of bees, it is disheartening when one half of a hive and the queen decide to find a new home. It is their way of growing in numbers. The remaining bees will produce a new queen and life goes on. This year we had four swarms and were able to only capture two. When you encounter a swarm, as some of you did this spring, call a beekeeper and don’t worry about being stung as the bees are only interested in clustering around their queen to protect her.
Weather
We speculate that the rainy weather this spring kept the bees in the hive and not out foraging and, consequentially, they ate much of the honey we normally would have extracted.
All in all, our six beekeepers had fun while learning a great deal about bees and their short six-week lives. We welcome anyone who would like to join us in this adventure as we do our part to Help Save The Bees. Just give us a call and remember, when you buy a jar of our honey, all the money goes to the Arbor Acres Resident’s Assistance Fund.

Phoebe & Bill Satterwhite When Bill and I moved into Arbor Acres before we needed to, it became a wonderful adventure, which opened up a world of new friends, new entertainment and new performance music . . . And we are very happy here!
Ruth Fincher I have loved Arbor Acres since the very first time I saw it, and still can’t believe I’m here and home at last! Everywhere you look, there is beauty and everywhere you walk, there are places to sit down! The residents and staff have such a spirit of love, caring and sharing that lifts you up every day. For me, Arbor Acres is truly Heaven on Earth!!
Jean Burroughs I was Chair of the Choral and Vocal Department at Salem Academy. From the large chorus, we each year formed a small group called “SPIRIT”. They sang popular songs and performed for various groups off campus.
One of our invitations for several years was to sing for the Men’s Club of Arbor Acres at one of their luncheons. The girls really enjoyed doing this because they were warmly welcomed, and they enjoyed their conversations with the members as they enjoyed a lovely lunch with a corsage at each place setting.
One time I remember the conversation as we rode back to Salem in our van: “They are the nicest men! I wish they were our age. I’d invite them to the prom (which was next weekend).”
See, even then our men were special! That is when I decided I would choose to move here myself someday. . . And we are very happy here!
In the February Lamplighter, we asked that you submit memory articles detailing your first impressions or experiences with Arbor Acres. In celebration of the 40th anniversary, we will be sharing these submissions with you on a monthly basis. Please enjoy–and please keep ‘em coming!

How to Vote by Mail with an Absentee BallotA recent COVID-19-related bill changes how NC voters vote their absentee ballot by mail. Any North Carolina registered voter may request and receive a mail-in “absentee” ballot. No special circumstance needed. No photo ID is required to vote by mail.
Follow these 5 Steps to Vote by Mail
Voters may call the North Carolina State Board of Elections or their county board of elections and request a blank absentee ballot request form be sent to them by mail, e-mail, or fax.
1. COMPLETE THE ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUEST FORM:
A registered voter (or their near relative or legal guardian) must complete and sign the ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUEST FORM. An official North Carolina State Board of Elections website for filling out and submitting forms fully online should be ready no later than September 1, 2020. Until then, voters can print and submit the form.
2. RETURN THE REQUEST FORM
The voter must sign the request form and submit it to their COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS in person or by email, fax, or mail via U.S. Postal Service, DHL, FedEx or UPS.
The request form must be received by 5:00 pm October 27.
3. RECEIVE THE BALLOT
Each county board of elections will mail absentee ballots to registered voters who have made a request.
4. MARK BALLOT, FILL OUT CERTIFICATE ON THE ENVELOPE
Mark the ballot with your choices in the presence of one witness who is at least 18 years old. The witness should not violate your privacy while you vote (unless you need assistance due to a disability); the voter and witness (or notary public) must each complete and sign the certificate on the return envelope and provide their addresses.
Who may not serve as a witness?
o A candidate unless the candidate is the voter’s near relative.
o Employees of a facility may not serve as a witness for voters in a facility. See the instructions included with the absentee ballot for more information.
5. RETURN THE BALLOT IN THE ENVELOPE
Return the ballot in the container-return envelope by mail or deliver in person to your COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS. If returning by mail, the envelope must be postmarked by 5 PM on Election Day. If you are returning the ballot in person, take the ballot to your County Board of Elections office (not an Early Voting site or Election Day precinct). Only the voter or the voter’s near relative or legal guardian may return your ballot— do not give it to someone else to return.

Absentee Voter Request forms are in the Cubby Rack Carousel.

Janice’s personal favorite is that in no place in the Bible can you find the saying,
