Carlsberg uses a unique aroma hop and natural malted barley to brew our great beer. We were the rst to purify brewing yeast to guarantee quality and taste, so naturally it was named after us: Saccharomyces Carlsbergensis.

We didn’t keep it to ourselves either. Today, it’s the yeast that the majority of the world’s lagers are based on, so it seems Saccharomyces Carlsbergensis is probably the best ingredient in the world...

Landlords are judged by the ale they serve. That’s why

the very best choose to serve the very best – Fuller’s ESB.

ESB is hand-crafted by time-proven brewing methods.

It truly is our champion ale, with a uniquely rich and

deliciously fruity fl avour that has won ESB more awards

than any beer in its class.

It really doesn’t get better than this.

We must never underestimate the potency of

our memories. Most remember a first day at

school, a first kiss: these linger deep and long in

our subconscious. Equally, many of us remember

the taste of a first beer drunk or the beer served

in the Students Union bar while at university.

We can recall the time spent with a parent in a

pub and the beers each chose. And those lucky

enough to live in a brewing town can never

forget the elemental smell of the sweet malt

being mashed, hanging softly in the air.

The tastes and smells of beers, as Marcel Proust

might have said, “Remain poised a long time, like

souls, remembering, waiting, hoping, amid the ruins

of all the rest; and bear unflinchingly, in the tiny

and almost impalpable drop of their essence, the

vast structure of recollection.”

And it is these stories that members of the British

Guild of Beer Writers want to tell. Whether we write

about the art, science, craft or business of beer, we

unite in wanting to tell the story of that marvellous

creation of yeast, grain, hops and water – beer in all

its fantastic life enhancing variations.

Since its inception the Guild’s objective has

been to improve the standards of beer writing

and broadcasting. From trade magazines to

encyclopaedias, from national newspapers to blogs,

tweets and videos, we embrace all elements of

the media.

Beer is part of our way of life, and something that

is deeply embedded in our culture, and it is this

that we celebrate annually at our annual dinner

and awards. Set for 1st December in the Park

Plaza Riverbank, which overlooks the Thames and

the House of Parliament, the event exemplifies

our belief that beer is an equal and honourable

companion to wine when it comes to holding

banquets in modern, stylish surroundings to

accompany fine food.

And it is within these pages of our new directory

that you will find leading experts – the members of

the British Guild of Beer Writers – who communicate

about all the nuances of our beer culture. From its

pre-historic routes to it being the drink of the iPad

generation there are great stories to tell.

Our collective expertise grows and encompasses

beer communicators from bloggers to trade

journalists, consumer columnists to technical writers,

scientists and historians. The Guild’s membership

extends from tweeters to contributors to Oxford

University Press’ Companion to Beer. They have a

passion for our national drink and the desire to tell

its story.

When i tell people that i write about beer, it can

take them a moment or two to absorb this life-

changing revelation.

Even when they get past the hackneyed “Do you actually

get paid for going to the pub?” there can be some further

ridicule. What could I possibly say about beer that hasn’t

been said before? Surely people want to get drunk, not

read about someone else drinking? You’re not a brewer, so

how can your opinion be worth reading about?

Which is all rather irritating, yet on the last of these, they

may have a tiny point. I remain as bewildered as I was last

December at being named British Beer Writer of the Year

– though I have now learned to moderate my language a

little when questioned about it.

Rationalising my success in the competition – once

you overlook my obvious charm, good looks and the

phenomenal bribe I paid to judging panel chairman Pete

Brown and his fellow judges – I’d say that it struck a blow

for newspaper journalism at a time when the profession is

under serious attack.

The previous two winners of the award were bloggers

– bloody good ones as it goes – and as a committed,

dyed-in-the-wool print journalist, I have reluctantly

re-adjusted over recent years to a world where the web

and the blogosphere have become for millions their prime

source of information. Perhaps if I had the time, or the

technical expertise, or anything to say which might be of

interest to people living beyond the LS postcodes, I would

probably set up a website myself. Pete got me into Twitter,

though given the inane nature of my posts, he’s probably

regretting it.

But for now I consider myself fortunate that my local

newspaper, the Yorkshire Evening Post, continues to

publish a regular pub column and allows me to write pretty

much anything I want, so long as it runs to about 1,200

The wonder of it allBEING A BEER WRITER IS BOTH A PLEASURE AND A

PRIvILEGE – AND OCCASIONALLY THE SOURCE OF SOME

SERIOUS DISBELIEF, AS simon JenKins EXPLAINS

words and hits the inbox on time. It’s good to know that

some of my fellow writers, notably Alastair Gilmour in

Newcastle, Duncan Brodie in Suffolk and Gavin Aitchison

in York are keeping the flame of beer writing alive in

the regional press, though many local newspapers have

dropped such columns. Of course their restaurant and wine

slots largely survive.

One thing I am really looking forward to in judging this

year’s awards is to see what else is being done in the

regional press to promote beer and pubs.

I’m not a full-time beer writer. Such positions are few and far

between and are mostly held by people who know far more about

the subject than I do. Rather than a specialist, I have always been

more of a jobbing journalist who’s happy to turn his hand to any area of news or features, as the agenda

of the time demands.

I have always been more of a jobbing journalist who’s

happy to turn his hand to any area of news or features,

as the agenda of the time demands. So I’ve written

about football, crime, opera, travel, politics, rock music,

restaurants, working on different newspapers around the

north for more than 20 years, initially as a reporter and

then as a sub-editor.

Page 8: Beer Writers Yearbook 2011-12

8 the beer writers yearbook 2011-12

As newspapers have reacted to straitened economic

circumstances, it has been the subs who have suffered the

most; short-sighted bosses deciding they can largely do

without these sharp-tongued, slightly cynical journalists

holding up the production process.

Yet subs have long been the skilled surgeons of the

newsroom, re-ordering, shortening and sharpening the

copy while creating witty and interesting headlines and

eye-catching design. And the fact they have acted as a last

crucial filter to keep newspapers free of inaccuracy, libel,

contempt and rank bad writing, seems, at least to those

making the cuts, largely here nor there. Sad times.

The department I once worked in has been slashed to the

bone. Pages are now simply pre-designed arrangements

of boxes which reporters fill to order, writing their own

headlines while they go. A lot of folk I worked with have

either retired, or moved, or been shown the door; those who

remain wear a hunted look as though they fear it is only a

matter of time. It’s certainly not the place I remember.

I would like to be able say that I left because I saw the

writing on the wall, but my departure from the newsroom

was more to do with simply wanting to broaden my

horizons and try my hand at something else. My working

day is now spent in the University of Leeds, learning about

and writing about the amazing research that goes on in

our labs and our libraries and out in the field. It could be

biology one day and Beethoven the next; economics or

the environment; physical science, medical science, social

science. Communicating this work – whether internally to

colleagues or briefing journalists eager to write about our

research – is continually fascinating and mind-expanding.

It pays the mortgage too. Even when I worked on the

newspaper, my pub column was still a freelance activity,

something I had to attend to in my spare time.

And yet I consider myself phenomenally lucky to be able

to write about pubs, something that I enjoy with a passion.

Yorkshire is blessed with more than its fair share of good

ones, and it remains a privilege, of course, to be paid to

visit them.

cHoosinG favouriTe cHildren

When people learn that I write about pubs, another dumb

question that I face on a regular basis is “Which is your

favourite?” It’s a query akin to being asked to choose

which of my children I love the most. There are plenty I like

a lot, and of course the one you might pick to visit on a

blazing summer afternoon might be somewhere you would

steer clear of on a wintry night; the one where you meet

your mates might not be the one you take your partner for

a romantic date. Context is key to the choice.

The licensed trade is such a broad church and its outlets so

wonderfully diverse that there is usually at least one to suit

every situation.

I’m currently drawing up a shortlist of Leeds bars and

pubs to appear in a new guidebook. They range from

grand victorian drinking houses, all polished wood, etched

mirrors, nooks, crannies and glinting copper, to minimalist

one-room bars with music and modern art.

The common factor running through each of them is that

they serve quality beer. For the vast majority, this means

cask ale, though a couple have qualified for inclusion

on the strength of their overseas beers, rare Belgians on

draught, fridges stocked with fruit beers, richly bitter

American India Pale Ales, crafted Czech lagers, wheat

beers and stouts.

And where bar staff are sufficiently knowledgeable to talk

about the range, to perhaps even suggest the ideal beer to

accompany your choice of food, the absence of a serried

rank of real ale hand pumps can be easily forgiven.

“What’s your favourite beer?” is another question which

I face down with scarcely-disguised disdain, given that

there are thousands in the world, and that my esteemed

beer writing colleagues have laboured long and hard to

choose their top 500, their personal favourites, their “300

(or 1,001) Beers To Try Before You Die”. To have a single

favourite seems almost perverse.

While I lack the sheer beer-ticking fervour of those

who plan their whole lives around the CAMRA festival

calendar, I do still relish the experience of visiting a pub

I’ve never been to before and trying an unfamiliar beer, or

discovering some new nuance of flavour created by the

genius of the brewer and the natural alchemy of

the process.

Even after three decades of visiting, eating and drinking

in, and writing about pubs, they still retain the capacity to

delight and surprise. What wine writer could claim such an

endless variety from a crisp Pinot Blanc or an opulent

St Emilion?

You’re welcome to join me for a drink any time – I know

heaps of good places, and loads of great beers. But please,

no stupid questions.

There are 54,818 pubs in Great Britain today. There

are 55,584 supermarkets. Tomorrow there will be

54,814 pubs and the number of supermarkets will

rise inexorably.

It’s an inevitable fact of living in straitened times, we’re

losing four Red Lions a day and being offered Tesco Extras

like some three-for-two pact with the devil. Statistics like

these send shivers down the licensed trade’s spine and, on

the surface, they don’t look good. We writers like them,

though, because they make good copya.

Creaky old Queen victoria with her attractive half-timbered

frontage and overflowing window boxes being assaulted

by Big Bad Wolfco gets us going. And, if it wasn’t

supermarkets that we used as a measure of our spending

power it would be garden centres, although the vic being

battered by a bunch of dahlias and a bird box does not

make as chilling a headline.

We’re a nation of shopkeepers, as Napoleon asserted,

so measuring declining numbers of pubs against full

shopping trollies gets the message over rather neatly; it’s

a clever ploy. When the British Beer & Pub Association

issued a statement that there were more supermarkets and

convenience stores than pubs was proof the industry was

at a “tipping point”, the newspapers were full of it.

“You don’t rush to celebrate a new job, new baby,

engagement, wedding or your team winning the cup in the

supermarket,” said a spokesman. “You can’t play darts, join

the local football or cricket team, sing karaoke or do the

quiz in the fruit and veg aisle.”

Nicely put, but you can actually buy a cabbage or a couple of

leeks in the pub – at least you can on a Sunday lunchtime

when the local tenders of allotments bring their booty to

barter for beer. Sausage, cheese and game, too; they’re all

readily available. (Perhaps there might be a story in that.)

It’s not an entirely serious point, but it illustrates that the

pub is far more outward bound than merely somewhere

you can have a drink. The pub is the meeting place, the

social hub, the cultural exchange, the pre-concert venue,

the post-match sorrow-drowner, the lunch provider, the

wanna-be-alone refuge and – if you’re a journalist – an

extension of the office.

The pub is where news is discovered. The pub is where

someone will approach you and start to tell you something

you’d rather not know at that precise moment. They’ll

not listen to your plea that you’re only here for a quick

one with your wife before you go to the cinema and it’s

something she’s been dying to see for ages and she’s had

a hard day and she needs that gin and tonic Right Now

while it’s still sharp and fizzy or else she’ll be in the sort of

foul mood that even her long-term love-interest Gerard

Depardieu couldn’t drag her out of even if he were to walk

through that door at this very moment and sweep her up

dans ses bras so please can it wait for another time when I

promise to be all ears and to follow up all your suggestions

oh please oh please.

Basically, you find stories in pubs and pubs make stories;

lots of them, more than you’ll ever remember. There’s

always something going on that even the most world-

weary imagination can make a point out of. And, points

mean prizes. Many of us make our living – or at least a

chunk of it – out of writing about beer and pubs and the

prize at the end of the day comes cheque-shaped.

sTories To Be Told

Fortunately, there are other ways of looking at figures, so

instead of moaning that the sky has fallen in and the pub

is about to be consigned to history, let’s celebrate instead

that we still have 54,818 pubs to visit (and what’s more,

there were 54,822 yesterday).

DOES THE MATH AND COMES UP WITH BILLIONS – YES,

BILLIONS – OF STORY IDEAS

Page 11: Beer Writers Yearbook 2011-12

We can make up our own stats and make them mean

whatever we want them to mean. So, if it’s also true that

there are 15 million regular pub-goers in this country, it

means that there are 15 million times 54,818 reasons to be

cheerful – customers multiplied by pubs – amounting to an

incredible 842,270,000,000 stories waiting to be told, give

or take a day or two.

We’d much rather it was all good news, but sadly bad news

travels much better – and sells quicker.

Pubs create their own stories and stories can be created

around what’s found in them. They are still feeling the

effects of the smoking ban introduced in July 2007. They

are under increasing pressure from local residents who

object to the noise they make; they bubble with health and

safety rules, they have under-age problems, binge drinking

issues, discrimination accusations and outbreaks of anti-

social behavior – but those angles dwell on the negatives

and aren’t what we want to broadcast continually.

Life at the pub: Fuller’s Red Lion, Charlton, Hants

The pub may be feeling the chill draught of recession

but the pub-writing industry – and all that goes with it – is in

rude health. Positive or negative, it offers fertile ground from

every angle.

However, some pubs are working at all sorts of initiatives

in order to thrive – or even survive – and those are the

ones making worthy column inches. They are not only

brewing their own ale, for instance, but also importing

wines directly from small vineyards. They bake their own

bread, host regular festivals, experiment with beer and

food matching, and they twin themselves with pubs in

other countries. Publicans with wit and imagination are

rustling up exciting menus and creative events, too.

One started serving crispy pigs’ ears on a tapas-style bar

menu but exhausted his local supply to the extent that

they are now imported from France. Another organised a

Beer & Sausage weekend. By the Sunday night the team

had served 759 kilos of sausages (around 7,200 links) in

flavour combinations ranging through wood pigeon with

damson jam to black rabbit and Brooklyn Chocolate Stout.

Not only did this pub do astonishing trade but the two

others in the street also felt the benefit – one more than

doubled its regular income while the other counted record

takings before running out of beer. Local takeaways

reported a rush, the newsagent had to call in extra staff,

and the taxi firm has requested notice of the next festival,

such was the demand for cabs. The resident journalist also

got plenty of mileage out of it.

Another pub uses a carbon-neutral biomass boiler which

has reduced fuel bills by £20,000, while produce from its

vegetable garden goes straight into the kitchen – a tale

with “legs” that develops seasonally. Yet another pub

group has linked up with a concert hall to provide a regular

shuttle-bus service for audiences. It works both ways –

Sting and friends came back on one trip, did an impromptu

gig, and sunk a few pints.

It was a gift for the journo-in-the-know and definitely one

occasion that was worth setting up while the gin and tonic

fizzled itself out and tempers rose.

Let’s remind ourselves; pubs make stories and stories lead

to prizes – and what shape do prizes come in?

echoes of sporting gloriesThe Garden Gate is a ceramic palace, from the ornate brown and cream tiled exterior, to the greens of the pub’s long central corridor which divides little snugs, nooks and crannies from the two main drinking areas which are either side of a central bar.

The corridor is itself a gem, tiled from floor to ceiling, save for polished mahogany panels and panes of etched and decorated glass. The floor is an ornate tiled mosaic; a tiled archway arcs over the corridor.

Wood, mirrors and glass predominate in each room, though it’s the ceramic which makes this place truly special. No-one seems to know for sure, but it’s only a part-romantic notion that these tiles were Burmantofts Faience, a relic of the time when the east Leeds suburb was famed worldwide for its pottery.

There has been a pub here since 1833, and it was known as the Garden Gate from 1849, probably a reference to the nearby market gardens which were a source of significant local income at the time. The present building – a perfect example of late victorian and early Edwardian architecture – dates from 1902, when pottery production at Burmantofts was still in full swing.

There used to be something of a schism about hops in the world of brewing. There were the four classic European varieties (Saaz, Tettnang, Spalt and Hallertau, the so-called noble hops), understated British varieties (East Kent Golding, Fuggles, and the like), and exuberantly pungent American hops (Cascade, Chinook, et al). Each was viewed with suspicion by the other, and never the twain shall meet. Happily, those days of hop apartheid are over, and brewers all over the world merrily use hops from wherever best suits

the style of beer that they want to make. I’ve had outstanding British bitter in St. Louis, Missouri, resinous American-style pale ale in Cornwall, and the best tasting pilsner ever from a brewery in northern Italy.

Hops are the spice of beer. They add zest and excitement to the stolid, sweet backbone that the malt provides. They are the chutney in a cheese sandwich, the jalapeños on a pile of cheesy nachos. The interplay between hops and malt is what makes beer interesting – in fact, it’s what makes beer beer.”

simon JenKins beer writer of the year

Even the cellar is tiled. It is untidy now, gleaming Leeds Brewery barrels side-by-side with heaps of detritus, accumulated over the careless years of decay. The new team are working through it, slowly.

In these bowels of white-faced brick is glimpsed another past; a time when every pub and club, factory and church fielded teams of men who carried their proud names across the whitewash. The Garden Gate had a fearsome reputation for rugby league. One can imagine great hulks of working men, stirred to the cause and striding into battle, local honour at stake.

Beyond the barrels, beyond the heaps of junk, arched doorways open onto abandoned changing rooms, a forgotten shrine to these local heroes. A leather table, where once a masseur would have pummelled players back into shape, stands forlorn in its midst.

The showers, the communal bath, are all still there, relics of this glorious past. Ghosts must hang here, echoes of these great men, stepping through the fine hot mist of the showers, nursing their wounds and cursing still.

Their sporting museum lies derelict, awaiting some love and attention.

“Get naked, wrap in sheet, don’t shower.”

Either it’s a crudely simplified translation by Jan, our guide from Czech Tourism, or that’s what the Czech woman has just said as she passes around crisply folded, thin white sheets.

Heavy, clearly audible gulps drop around the tiny changing room as the door closes behind us. Grasping at the sheet and clinging to our soon-to-be-unnecessary clothes, we look around at each other trying to work out what’s happening, as if we’d just been told that we need to strip naked and sit in bath of... oh, yeah.

“We don’t wear shorts then?” I ask, gripping to a strange hope that the ones I’d packed would still be of use.

“No. Naked with the sheet.” Jan replies.

It’s as I slip off my shoes that I really wonder what I’m doing. The promise was a beer bath. Put another way, it was a bath in

The brewing industry, burdened by centuries of tradition, is a slow-moving beast. Mind you, it’s a rare brand owner these days that believes appealing to tradition will motivate consumers to part with their hard earned cash. Brewers don’t sell heritage anymore; now it’s refreshment, taste and, providing your local advertising standards enforcers are in a generous mood, lifestyle.

It’s in the production of beer, the actual making of the stuff that has been dragging its heels behind marketing. But here’s something you need to be aware of – the pace of change has quickened considerably over the last two years.

In Franconia the term Bierkeller or Sommerkeller causes confusion to foreign or North German visitors. They are surprised to find that Kellers are not smoky dives situated in a cellar under a pub, but beer gardens that open on the hills outside towns in the summer months. The name originates in the days before refrigeration when beer was brewed in the winter months and stored or lagered in cool cellar caves in the hills for summer consumption. They are now one of the most delightful features of beer drinking in Franconia, and thankfully remain simple establishments with basic benches and tables, and rarely provide anything sophisticated in the way of food.

These changes go beyond a revamp of production processes. What’s astonishingly ground-breaking is the willingness of suppliers and brewers to think what has been previously unthinkable, to reshape the raw materials of beer. That simple dusty reassurance on the container of your favourite beer that “only the finest malt and hops have been used,” may no longer be the case. At the risk of sounding like one of those turgid professional self-help manuals, here are five recent developments that you need to know about.

There are dozens of Kellers in the Franconian countryside owned by pubs that once used them to lager their own brew. Most pubs that still brew have their own Keller although these days the beer is usually lagered in a refrigerated room at the brewery.

Most of Bamberg’s breweries had their own Keller mainly on the Stephansberg but in some cases on the Jakobsberg or Kaulberg. After brewing, the beer would be taken by the traditional beer wagon to the Keller for lagering.

beer. Now we’re standing in a changing room, cold tiled floor beneath our feet, barely a stretched-out arm from each other as we silently and awkwardly undress, stuffing our clothes into a locker and wrapping our dignity beneath the see-through sheet.

The Czech woman – short, rather dramatically made-up – returns to collect us, opening the door in a way which suggests she’s seen it all before and really doesn’t care. She leads us through to the baths, a small, open area with curtains closed around it, piped music playing quietly.

On top of the bath is thick foam spread across the water, quite literally like a giant pint of beer served in a silver tankard. My eyes immediately notice the golden glass of beer next to the bath, condensation dripping down the sides; a comfortingly recognisable beacon in the middle of a very unusual experience.

WHaT do you Have To do To Win?

It’s entirely up to the judging committee, comprised of a

cross-section of beer writers, commissioning editors, and

industry professionals, what wins, and no one can predict

what will do well. That said, winning entries tend to have

certain shared qualities:

Passion

If you’re not that interested in your subject, it’s doubtful

you’ll persuade anyone else to be. We’re not saying you

should rant and rave, but in the best writing, the love of

beer and pubs is obvious – and infectious.

Originality

This is relative, of course – the big themes in beer and

pubs are written about year after year. But the awards

reward fresh perspectives. Knowledge and authority about

the subject might seem essential, but can be beaten by an

inspiring cry from the heart from a new arrival to the world

of beer.

Clarity and readability

In order to communicate well, you need to communicate

clearly. It helps enormously if you are clear, engaging

and accessible.

WHo can enTer?

• The awards are open not just to writers, but to anyone

who communicates about beer. This includes (but is

not limited to) journalists, professional writers, authors,

bloggers, poets, illustrators, filmmakers, broadcasters

and photographers.

• You don’t have to be a member of the BGBW to enter.

• Most people enter their own work but if you’re an

editor, publisher or other third party you can also enter

someone else’s work on their behalf.

• The awards are not limited to work published in the

United Kingdom.

HoW To enTer

Number of entries.

Entries are limited to six pieces of work per category. You

can enter as many categories as you want, but if you’re

lucky enough to win one category, your work in other

categories will not be judged – you can only win one. The

judges reserve the right to move work between different

categories if appropriate.

Quality, not quantity: please enter between one and

six pieces of work in each category.

If you write a great deal, you’re encouraged to think about

your very best work – one great piece stands a better

chance than six averagely good ones. If you’re not prolific,

don’t worry – in past years writers submitting one lone

article have won a gold tankard. If you submit more than

six, the judges will choose six pieces at random. If you

are a blogger, the judges will look at the overall blog, but

in line with the above guidelines, please provide printed

copies of the six blog posts you feel are your strongest.

suBmiTTinG enTries

visit beerguild.co.uk to download the entry form. Please

post this with TWO HARD COPIES of each piece of your

work, which must have been published or broadcast in

between 30 September 2010 and 31 August 2011, stating

where it has been published.

Even if you’re entering the on-line category, we need print

outs of your work – a list of URL cannot be accepted!

Similarly, we need two copies of DvD/CDs for any audio/

visual entries. Authors of books should send FOUR copies

of the book.

Entries must be received by 9th September, to:
