finding room to foster careis...

Foster Care Associates (FCA) is supporting parents to develop their parenting skills by providing support in the home of a specially trained foster carer. The aim is to keep the family together and stop the children from going into care.FCA which marks its 21st anniversary of providing care and support to children and young people this year, is appealing for potential carers across the region with the time, dedication and room to care for a parent and their child to consider a move into fostering.A parent and child placement offers the par-ent and child the best opportunity to remain together. A parent may be struggling to care for their child and require extra support, and these placements allow the parent to develop their

parenting skills in a stable and caring environment whilst in the guidance of their foster carer.FCA encourages parent and child placements because they allow the parent to maintain and build upon their relationship with the child, meaning a foster home can play a pivotal role in ensuring the parent and child a happy lifetime together. FCA provide support to those undertaking parent and child placements every step of the way, including training, a financial allowance, access to carer support groups and organised family activities - all contributing factors as to why FCA placements are 22% more stable than the national average.

As a rugby fan, I thought I would go with a commemorative front cover for the World Cup. I have also included a planner to keep for posterity, I hope it will be for all the right reasons.

Pop the magazine in your bag or car and the next time the children are driving you mad, set them to task finding Herbee, he’s hiding in one of the adverts.

I try and fit as much as I can into the out and about guide and throughout the magazine but there is plenty more on the website and I post and share on facebook too. Don’t forget to let me know about your school fairs, plays and events Andrena

NSPCC Luxury Gift Fair to be held at the Sculpture Gallery, Woburn Abbey on Tuesday, 13th October

In Woburn Abbey’s Sculpture Gallery on Tuesday 13th October, Bedfordshire NSPCC is holding a Luxury Gift Fair. All profits will be donated to the NSPCC to support their work in Bedfordshire. There will be over 40 stalls, so whether you are shopping early for Christmas or just to treat yourself, we are sure you will find something to suit you. In addition to the stalls, there will be the gift tree , every ticket promising a gift worth over £10. Susan Lousada, a member of the organising committee said: “This fair has been organised by a group of NSPCC supporters and thanks to the wonderful support of The Duke and Duchess of Bedford, we hope to raise a significant amount of money to support the vital work of the NSPCC and change children’s lives in Bedfordshire”.The funds raised will support the NSPCC’s Schools

Service - a vital service that gives children the tools to protect themselves. Trained volunteers go into schools to talk to children about abuse in all its forms, to educate them in an age appropriate way, giving them the confidence to talk about abuse and how to seek help. We want children to know that if they are worried about themselves or their friends, there is something they can do and someone they can talk to, including contacting ChildLine.Doors open at 9.30am and close at 4.00pm; entry is £5 payable on the day. Light lunches, tea and coffee will be available throughout the day.For more information, please ring the NSPCC Regional office on 0203 763 2302 or email London&[email protected]

The Bletchley Lions club provided a team of 10 volunteers to carry out garden maintenance at Orchard House, Wolverton. The Plants and Compost was supplied by Dobbies of Bletchley, Orchard House is a rehabilitation and respite care home for the elderly.

Work involved clearing the foot paths, cutting back the foliage and generally tidying up. Left untended the paths and overhanging foliage would pose a serious risk to the residents, the garden has improved so residents can use it to recuperate from their stay in hospital .

In addition, Trim A Tree pruned the trees and removed a lot of the branches of the trees to make the rooms in the centre and the garden lighter.

The funds to enable the Lions to support these projects is donated by the people of Bletchley for which the club is very grateful,100 % of donations go back to good causes ,we have no administration costs !!!The Lions are also look after a garden in MK Hospital as well.

home

Damage to your home caused by water or even worse fire, is always going to be upsetting for you and your family.

You may have spent years and a great deal of cash getting it just how you want it, and you would be naturally proud of the end result, then all of a sudden your hard work ruined.

Now you may need to make an insurance claim, and hope that your insurers will take responsibility and restore your home to its former glory, but instead they ask you to get three quotations for the work. You contact many tradesmen, but most are too busy to come out and see you, and the ones who say they will don’t turn up. You eventually get the quotes to your insurers, but they naturally go for the lowest quote and perhaps even reduce it, then tell you this is their settlement, which you are expected to accept. You have actually done all the hard work, received less than an adequate settlement and you may even have to find some additional cash to complete all the work.

Is there a better more effective way to handle your claim?

Aspray have been successfully project managing insurance claims since 2005 for both domestic and commercial

property owners. We will explain the claims process to you, then handle your claim, surveying the damage, negotiating an adequate settlement with your insurers, then carrying out all repairs using our own, experienced contractors.

We will deal directly with your insurers, and if they want to send their representative to view the damage, we will also be there to represent you. Experienced in negotiating favourable settlements on your behalf, our Assessors will ensure there is sufficient settlement offered to carry out all the work to the standards you expect at no additional cost to you.Keeping you informed what is happening with your claim is key, and we will do this every step of the way.

NO CHARGES. Because we invoice your insurers directly, there are no charges for using our services

Aspray manage all claims for flood, fire, escape of water, subsidence, theft and impact damage.

Call David Hearn at Asprays on 01908 483394 to find out how you can experience a stress free insurance claim for both domestical and commercial property.

MethodHeat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently fry the finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add the peeled, deseeded and chopped pumpkin or squash to the pan with the ground cumin, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden.

Pour the vegetable stock into the pan, then season with salt and pepper.

Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft.

Pour the pot of double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil,

then purée with a hand blender. For an extra-velvety consistency you can now push the soup through a fine sieve into another pan.

While the soup is cooking heat the remaining 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the lardons until deep golden brown. Add some chopped chilli and a few small sage leaves to taste, then cook for a few mins more until they too are tinged with colour.

Reheat the soup if needed, season to taste, then serve scattered with the lardon garnish.

Pumpkin SoupWinter Warmer

Note: Although this recipe will work with Halloween pumpkins they tend to be bred for size rather than flavour. If you want to use a Halloween pumpkin I’d recommend drizzling the pumpkin pieces with olive oil first, mixing them with the cumin and roasting them in the oven on Gas 6 / 200C for 20-30 minutes. Then follow the recipe as before. Roasting brings out the maximum flavour.

Jobs for the gardenClear up fallen autumn leaves regularly, bag up or add to compost bins for beautiful leaf mould next yearKeep dead- heading and cut back perennials that have died down but leave the more ten-der ones such as penstemon and salvia until spring.Plant all spring bulbs except tulips which need to wait until next monthMove tender plants, including aquatic ones, into the green-houseFor those of us with clay soil, now is the perfect time to improve it with

composts and mulch before it becomes too wet or frozen Harvest orchard fruit - store only those in perfect condi-tion. Pick and ripen squash and pumpkin: stand them outdoors on a slatted surface and bring under cover if frosty. Lift remaining maincrop pota-toes Prune climbing rosesRenovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf but make sure the soil is well prepared first.

Although we had some amazingly warm days this September, autumn is now definitely here, and the days are decidedly shorter. This is the time of change, from summer pinks and blues to the autumn oranges and reds. As the leaves fall, raking them will provide lots of lovely leaf mould for use next year.

Your Garden in October

GRASSESMaybe not one plant, the grasses really come into their own this time of year. Flower heads dance in the wind and as the weather gets colder provide food for insects. There are grasses for every location, short ones like Festuca glauca, the blue grass, for the front of the border, tall ones such as Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’ that can get up to 8 foot tall, Cyperus eragrosis for the bog garden or pond and Stipa tenuissima that looks great in a pot with annuals. Either on their own in or mixed with perenni-als and shrubs, grasses will give an extra interest and a sense of movement that simply cannot be matched.

IT’S THE LAW

Clinical Negligence Claims: The FactsWhat is Clinical Negligence?Clinical negligence is the breach of a medical professional’s duty of care to a patient. In order to succeed with a clinical negligence claim, you must establish that a medical practitioner’s duty of care towards you has been breached and that the breach has caused you an injury or loss.

Breach of dutyThe first step in any clinical negligence claim is to prove that there has been a breach of duty. What this means is that the care provided fell below the standard of a reasonably competent doctor in that particular field of medicine at that particular time. The test of whether the healthcare professional breached the duty of care is whether he or she has failed to meet the standard of a reasonable body of other medical practitioners also skilled in that field. However, if the defendant can show that there is a respectable body of medical practitioners who would have acted in the same way, then the claim will fail.

CausationIn addition to proving breach of duty, you must also prove what is known as causation. In other words, you have to establish that the negligent care provided either directly caused the injuries alleged or significantly contributed to them. Establishing this link between breach of duty and causation is not as

obvious as it sounds and has to be supported by independent medical opinion.

CompensationOnce breach of duty and causation has been established and admitted by the Defendant, compensation will be recoverable. This will include ‘General Damages’ which compensate for the pain and suffering experienced and ‘Special Damages’ which compensate for specific past and future financial losses.

Time limits Clinical negligence claims are subject to what is known as a ‘limitation period’. Legal proceedings for adults have to be brought within three years of the date of the injury or the date that you first became aware that the negligent treatment had caused you further injury, known as ‘date of knowledge’. For children, the three year time limit starts to run from their eighteenth birthday, therefore legal proceedings have to be brought before the child reaches age 21. For individuals that lack mental capacity, the time does not start ticking until they regain capacity. The Court does have discretion to extend the three year time limit in exceptional circumstances. However, it is best to approach a solicitor as soon as possible to avoid the risk of any potential claim being debarred.

Smile with ConfidenceCould cosmetic dentistry help?

Our smile is one of the first things that people notice about us, so a mouth full of stained, chipped or crooked teeth can really affect our confidence. Cosmetic dentistry ranges from small changes, such as crowning a chipped tooth, to whole-mouth makeovers. Com-mon procedures include:

BleachingTeeth can be stained by smoking, some medications and certain food and drink. Most stains can be removed by regular scale and pol-ish appointments, but others are harder to shift. Also, teeth naturally differ in colour, so some people will have naturally whiter teeth than others.Bleaching is usually done over the course of a few weeks, although laser bleaching can give you noticeable results, in less time. The bleaching product is painted onto your teeth, and activated by the laser. Teeth can sometimes feel a little more sensitive during treat-ment and gums can be a bit sore, but results can be pretty dramatic, with teeth up to six shades whiter. The effect can last for up to three years.

StraighteningAnother common cosmetic pro-cedure is straightening or moving teeth slightly. This is usually done with orthodontic braces. If you have an image of a spotty teen with metal train tracks, you might be surprised to find out that more and more adults are getting them, and

many of today’s braces are a world away from the unsightly ones of a few years ago. ‘Invisible braces’, for example, are clear plastic moulds that fit over your teeth. They’re not very noticeable and can be taken out for eating and brushing. They do need changing every few weeks, to fit your chang-ing bite, so can work out more expensive than traditional fixed braces.

Teeth-straightening is a gradual process and usually takes one to two years. The effect is pretty per-manent, although teeth may move slightly as the years go by.

Replacing missing teethThere are different ways to replace missing teeth. The best choice usu-ally depends on how many teeth are missing, where the gap is, and what condition your other teeth are in. You could opt for a partial denture, which can be removed. Alternatively, a bridge can be fixed onto remaining teeth, or onto implants (artificial roots).

Is it for you?Only you can decide whether you want to have work done and if so, how far to go. We’ve all seen the ‘Hollywood smiles’ – those too white, too straight, too perfect sets of teeth that just look a bit false. Sometimes it’s the minor imperfec-tions that make us who we are. Would Claudia Schiffer have been as distinctive if she’d had her teeth ‘fixed’?

There are various tooth whitening methods now available but all whiten-ing techniques work in one of two ways:

they either use bleach to lighten the natural tooth colour, or they rely on mild abrasion or chemicals to remove surface stains. Bleaching works by whitening the colour of the dentin - the layer of tooth lying directly below the enamel. A peroxide solution is placed on the enamel which opens the pores and allows the solution to reach and lighten the dentin below, resulting in whiter-looking teeth. Teeth vary in colour just as hair and skin do, so al-though teeth whitening can lighten the natural shade, it cannot change it.There are three ways to whiten teeth: profes-sional whitening, home whitening kits and over-the-counter products. Over-the-counter products are generally the most affordable and include toothpaste, floss, mouth rinse and gum or breath strips. Though all can achieve whitening results, many merely remove sur-face stains by using lightly abrasive materials - specifically in the case of whitening toothpaste - and do not actually whiten the dentin. Home whitening kits can be purchased for around £99 and contain whitening solution which is placed in trays (a bit like gum shields)

to keep the solution on the surface of the teeth. Making impressions for the manufac-ture of the trays is the responsibility of the individual and so the finished result can vary in success. In addition, the solution in some kits is not strong enough to be properly effective. Professional whitening takes place at the dental surgery and starts with a polish with pumice to remove plaque. The teeth are then coated with hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, using made-to-measure trays to keep the solution in contact with the teeth. Sometimes a laser may also be used to add heat and speed up the process. The treatment takes about an hour and costs up to £750. Some people’s teeth become sensitive to cold during or after treatment, and others may experience discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing. Tooth whitening only works on natural teeth. It will not work on dentures, crowns and ve-neers, and the effects may to last up to three years depending on what you eat or drink and whether you smoke. Before considering whit-ening your teeth, consult your dentist to check if it is suitable for you.

Cheryl Cole and Tom Daley have something in common – they both have dazzling smiles. Most of the rest of us mere mortals don’t. Over time our teeth tend to become yellow or stained. Eating, drinking, and smoking all take their toll. But don’t worry; there has never been a better time to get your pearly whites whiter!

I Love Your Smile!

Drinking Responsibly

As we head towards the festive season there’s a

renewed emphasis on the dangers of drink driving.

In England and Wales, the alcohol limit for drivers is

80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood,

35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath or 107 milligrammes per 100

millilitres of urine.

The punishment for being over the legal alcohol limit when driving is a ban for at

least 12 months, and a fine of up to £5,000. Offenders may also be given between three

and eleven penalty points. There is also a possibility of imprisonment for up to six

months. Those caught drink driving more than once in a 10 year period; will get a driving ban of at least three

years

It’s not easy to ensure you remain under the limit if you drink alcohol as a variety of factors such as, weight and metabolism can influence

results.

Even small amounts of alcohol can influence driving,

reactions may be slower, vision blurred and it can be

more difficult to process information for example. All

of these put you at risk.

WOMEN LEADERS AWARDS JUDINGING DAY

Judging day was a true inspiration to our judges. Although they had read the nominations for each of candidates actually meeting them and hearing in more detail their varied and interesting journeys on their career paths gave a whole new perspective. It had been a difficult task to reduce the numbers of original entries from over 110 down to a maximum of five for each category and it was obvious ly from the nominations received that Milton Keynes is host to a high number of Female Entrepreneurs and leaders as well as talented women working in the Community Impact area in either a professional (or) voluntary and (basis or) within a registered charity. iT was disappointing that no entries were received for the Engineering and Construction categories despite knowing that there are many talented women in Milton Keynes who work in that field.

It was an international day as several of the finalists (nominees) were either working abroad or on holiday so we managed to touch places such as Crete, Tenerife and both coasts of the United States, technology was our friend and despite a couple of hiccups contact was successful. At the close of our judging day the various panels of judges were

happy with their chosen winners and we now look forward to them being announced at our Gala Dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel on 20th November and we have no doubt that this will be a truly inspiring evening. Places are still available along with the opportunity to advertise in the Gala Dinner programme so please either refer to our website www.womenleadersmk.co.uk or email [email protected] for further details.

welcome changes to health & safety legislation

Self-employed - No More Health and Safety?

From the 1st October 2015 an estimated 1.7 million self-employed people will no longer have to comply with health and safety law. This is as a result of The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (General Duties of Self-Employed) (Prescribed Undertakings) Regulations 2015 coming into force.

If you’re self-employed before jumping with joy make sure you are exempt as the change doesn’t apply to everyone.

What is meant by ‘Self-Employed’?The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) state “For health and safety purposes, self-employed’ means that you don’t work under a contract of employment and work only for yourself”.

You may be self-employed for tax purposes, but this may not be so for health & safety. Please refer to the HMRC ‘Employment Status Guidance for assistance. (https://www.gov.uk/working-for-yourself/what-counts-as-self-employed)

Am I Exempt? If you work in a ‘Prescribed

Undertaking’ health & safety law still applies. These are:-:AgricultureAsbestosConstructionGasGM OrganismsRailway

The requirements of Health and safety law will still apply to you if you are self-employed but employ others.

There is also a catch-all that if your work poses a risk to the health & safety of others (e.g. members of the public, clients, contractors, etc.) the law still applies to you,

The significant, and potentially problematic, consideration for the self-employed is that (if their business is not in one of the prescribed undertakings) they will have to conduct an assessment of whether their undertaking falls within the scope of the catch-all, in that it may pose a risk to others.

The individual's liability to prosecution for breaches of health and safety legislation will turn on whether their undertaking falls within this provision or not, so it is imperative to get that assessment right.

Personal cause fundraising campaigns sought from across the UK for the launch of a brand new web platform.

Anna Bradley, 13 of Milton Keynes decided to launch the UK’s first ‘personal cause’ crowd funded

web platform after her mother was unexpectedly made redundant.

Anna looked around online to see if there was any way she could help her mum that didn’t in-volve the family going any further into debt with a loan. She found there was nothing available, so Anna raided her savings account and the concept Goodwill Giving was born.

Personal cause crowd funding is a new offering to the UK, but involves individuals utilising the upcoming web platform to set up personal fun-draising campaigns. The platform will integrate with Facebook and Twitter to allow sharing of campaign information and a ‘Fund-o-Meter’ will keep visitors and fundraisers up to date on the progress of the campaign. Updates, videos and images can be loaded and a campaign can be nominated by friends and family or by the individual facing the challenge.

The premise for a campaign can be as broad as the challenges of daily life can bring but some examples would be:• An elderly couple who need a heating system in their home before winter.• A child who hopes to buy text books or school uniform but can’t afford it.• A disabled person whose house desperately needs ramps and support rails. Anna is an energetic member of her community and school. She is a sports captain, anti-bullying am-bassador and no stranger to enthusiastically bringing about change in her envi-ronments. She is now taking on the entire country.email: [email protected] Facebook page: goodwillgiving www.goodwillgiving.co.uk

Did you know that the average man will spend 6 months of his life shaving?

That’s a lot of time he could be putting towards doing something else productive such as not shav-ing for a month whilst raising money for charity.

Since 2011, the charity Beating Bowel Cancer has been encourag-ing men to grow a beard through-out the month of December and to raise money so they can support the growing number of people affected by bowel cancer.

In 2014 over 3,000 men ditched their morning shave and got involved with the campaign, but this year the charity says they want to be bigger and better. Beating Bowel Cancer is looking to hit the half a million pound mark, and they ask that each participant raises a minimum of £100. The money raised will help them fund a range of vital services that give people with bowel cancer help, hope and reassurance.Beards can be a bit itchy at the beginning and you might get a few crumbs taking permanent residence on your face, but the charity say that it’s all worth it in the end. Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer but it doesn’t have to be that way as it has a very high rate of survival if caught early.

The charity says when people are curious and ask questions about your new facial fuzz, that’s your

time to talk about why you are growing a beard. Word soon gets round and not only does that mean more funds are raised but also important awareness of the disease, which can help to save lives.

Mark Flannagan, Chief Executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, said “Talking about bums and poo can be embarrassing for many people so the symptoms of bowel cancer are less well known than many other cancers. This means people are often diagnosed at a late stage when the disease is far more dif-ficult to treat.”

Scott Smith, from Essex was diagnosed with bowel cancer eight years ago. Scott’s cancer was caught early and because it hadn’t spread he didn’t need aggressive treatment like chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Scott said he likes taking part in Decembeard because he feels that it’s a clever way of raising aware-ness and says “growing a beard is such a conversation starter when people are so used to seeing you clean shaven.”

Scott states that he is living proof that early diagnosis saves lives and he wants to do everything he can to encourage others to be vigilant and spread the word.

If, like Scott, you would like to get involved, check out the Decem-beard website at www.decem-beard.org. You can also follow the campaign on Twitter and Instagram @de-cembeard_uk.

Discover the Andromeda Galaxy Tonight: Ever seen a distant galaxy beyond our own? Now’s your chance! The Andromeda Galaxy is so far away that light from the stars inside it takes 2.5 million years to cross the void of space to Earth. Yet even at this great distance Andromeda is easy to find with binoculars. Look up high to your south mid-evening for a giant square pattern of stars, and an arc of bright stars running out left. From the square move along this arc by one star and lift your binoculars slightly upwards until you see an oval patch of grey light. This is the glow from a trillion stars that make up the Andromeda Galaxy.

See the ISS from Bedfordshire: Mid-October sees the International Space Station (ISS) sail over Bedfordshire in the evening sky. Look for a con-

stant bright white light travelling west to east. It’ll be brighter than any other star in the sky, and won’t flash. View it from Thursday 8 October to Monday 19 October between 7pm – 8:30pm.

Watch the Orionids and Leonids Meteor Showers: This autumn sees a double peak in meteor activity across Bedfordshire. The first peak is on the night of 21-22 October when up to 30 shooting stars per hour from the Orionids may be seen between midnight and dawn. The night of 17-18 November sees the return of the Leonids. Expect 20+ shooting stars per hour after dark.Image: The Andromeda Galaxy by Torben Bjorn Hansen
