LOCAL BUZZ

Hello again It is the May garden special and I have crammed the pages full with as much as I can in the world of gardens but if that is not your thing then there is still plenty to read.

Congratulations to the winner and runners-up of the Easter competition, I met so many happy and emotional people as they found out they had been nominated.

A little appeal to young Catherine who wrote a lovely letter nominating her Dad but forgot to let me know how to get in touch. If you read this Catherine ask an adult to ring me and I will see what I can do!

Congratulations are also due to Emma who won the FISH competition, in the March magazine, I hope you had a great evening. This edition we have the Bucks Fizz (formerly) Make Believe tour. You have a lot more chance of winning tickets with Bee Local Magazine than winning the lottery so why not “make your mind up” (sorry!) to give it a go!

Make sure to look at the amazing competition from All About Me Fitness. Have you ever wished you could have a body transformation like a celebrity? Well this is your chance.

Have a fantastic May and enjoy the Bank Holidays.Andrena

Kidszania with KidsOut

At the end of March, KidsOut organised for 65 children and their adults to visit London’s KidZania for a day of fun and excitement. Featur-ing 60 real-life role-play activities, KidZania is a child-sized city that teaches children essential life skills and empowers them to explore. The group was comprised of children from refuges across London. Over 20,000 children flee their homes due to domestic violence each year, and Leighton Buz-zard based charity KidsOut supports them as they move into refuge with their non-abusive parent and adapt to life away from their family, friends and all they know. KidsOut provides crucial fun

days out, toys and clothes to ease this transition and show them that someone does care. At KidZania, KidsOut provided lunch for the families so the children could concentrate on pro-gressing in their ‘careers’, studying at ‘university’ and earning enough ‘money’. “I would just like to say a massive ‘THANK YOU’ for today,” said Karen, a refuge worker. “The kids had such a good time they did not want to leave… overall the day was excellent and I’ve already had requests for another visit. It was lovely to see the kids taking in the values being taught and learning to work for their ‘money’ or deciding to go back to ‘university’. The whole concept of KidZania is amazing.” KidsOut brings fun and happiness to over 50,000 disadvantaged and vulnerable children each year, and this is largely due to the fantastic local support received in Leighton Buzzard and the surrounding area. If you are interested in join-ing the KidsOut Community Committee to help plan events and raise the charity’s profile locally, please contact the Fundraising Team on 01525 243215.

Jamcrackers About Autism

Bee Local Magazine joined JamCrackers UK, a Leighton Buzzard IT company’s Cuppa and Cake Morning held on 7th April 2016 for Autism Awareness Week. It was a fantastic success, with over 70 people from the local

community attending. They were overwhelmed by the support received on the day and raised an incredible £898 for Autism Bedfordshire.

Sabrina and Richard Latimer, of JamCrackers’ said ‘We would like to thank everyone who came along on the day, in particular those who contributed towards the event’s success by donating prizes for the raffle and we would like to thank Sandhills Community House for the use of their facilities and their help on the

day’.

Autism Bedfordshire is an independent charity which relies entirely on grants and donations for income to provide exciting activities for children, young people and adults with Autistic Spectrum Conditions, including their

Summer Activity Schemes, Saturday morning Loads of Autistic Fun Groups, and Adult Skills and Social Groups. Not only do these activities and groups allow the individuals to enjoy the kinds of social, educational and life experiences that most others have, but also they provide much needed respite for their parents and carers.

Claire Thompson from Autism Bedfordshire said ‘Without the services Autism Bedfordshire provides, many of the families we support would find it quite difficult to cope with the stresses that living with someone with autism brings. Therefore, the monies raised from today will make a real difference to the support that Autism Bedfordshire can give to these families. I would sincerely like to thank JamCrackers’ for organising this fantastic event’.

Lions’ European Music Competition

The candidate was expected to play a mandatory piece of music followed by an optional piece selected from a provided list. Each year a different in-strument is set, this year it was the violin, Emily won the Dis-

trict competition and moved onto the next level of the competition, this was the Mul-tiple District level. This was held at Chethams, a renowned music school in Manchester, on the 3 April. Emily won the competition and now will represent The Lions clubs of Britain and Ireland, This will be Emily’s opportunity to perform on the international stage, and the next stage is to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, in October of this year.

The cost of the entering the competition is fully funded by The Lions Club of Bletchley and Lions International.

news

Gary Smith had worked as a roofer for 20 years before he decided to go it alone back in 2000. He began with one lad helping him and now he has a team of 8 roofers each specialising in different types of roofs, plus two office ladies, 5 vans and their own premises. Surviving the double dip recession and all the trials that being self-employed brings.

Gary puts his success down to trust and professionalism. He has made a point of being part of organisations that

ensure customer peace of mind, a member of trust-a-trader since 2007 and a member of the competent roofer scheme as well. The competent roofer scheme means that they are qualified and insured to self-certifcate their work so building control is not required. Not only that ,their flat felt roofs come with a 20 year guarantee and as a registered installer of Freefoam they can also offer a lifetime guarantee on that work too. But is that enough?Gary believes it gives customers reassurance but he feels

that his great reputation has also been earned by never requesting money until the job is completed, checked and signed off. His team provide professional estimates within 2 days of their appointment AND they turn up to appointments which should not be unusual, but is! He told Bee Local “all our roofers wear uniforms with name badges so that customers know who is at their door”Congratulations from Bee Local to Gary and his team for this great success story.

Gary decided to “go it alone” and now there are 10!

Get into the garden this summer – not in a flap!Spring has sprung and the weather is getting warmer, it’s time to get the lawnmower out and check over the BBQ ready for a lovely summer, that is if you are not scared stiff of flying creatures such as insects, bees, wasps, birds, moths or butterflies.

For many people reading this, fear of these things might seem a little silly, and even for someone with a fear it might seem a bit daft, however that doesn’t stop you being scared.

Even feeling that you are being a bit daft is no comfort when everyone is having fun outside and you are stuck inside. How do those wasps know you’re scared? They always seem to

make a “bee” line for you - sorry I just had to do it!

Control

You may think that the root cause of all of these fears is some event that happened to you that triggered off the phobia, however fear of all of the above have one thing in common and that is that you feel out of control and have a massive desire to be in control of that situation.

Powerful or powerless?

Most of the other people who are out enjoying the the garden or a BBQ don’t process the experience of meeting the bee, wasp, bird etc. in the same way as you, they feel more in control and feel that they have the skills and resources to deal with the situation. Both of you are experiencing the same thing, yet one person feels powerful when they see a wasp whereas you feel powerless, so which one is real?

Perspective

We are viewing the world and experiences through our own unique perspective and our own belief system. You firmly believe that wasps or bees are scary and you find evidence to support that belief, but the thing is it’s not real it is only a belief that you that you are creating and maintaining.

Change

The good news is that this is easy to change. We can process experiences in a more helpful and empowering way when we manage our thinking well. The Thrive Programme is a 6 week course that can rid you of fears and phobias, so don’t get in a flap this summer and miss out on all the fun learn how to Thrive instead!

Health & Fitnesssponsered byAll About Me

Fitness

by Andy Plant

“NEAT”You can shop for fitness!

This NEAT trick can really boost your results

With summer around the corner it’s a popular trait

for people to start thinking about their summer bodies before jetting off to all corners of the world on holiday. But with the longer nights starting to come around and better weather on the horizon, the motivation to drag yourself to a sweaty gym to pound away on a treadmill or chuck around the weights becomes harder and harder. So what can we do to really help boost results without spending every waking moment in the gym, whilst get-ting outside and enjoying the best of the British summer?

Realistically we still need to be working out (not

necessarily in the gym) but 3 x 30 minute sessions of resist-ance or HIIT training will really get your stoked and have you burning calories at a higher rate throughout the week. However

there is one tool in our tool box above all others that we are really starting to miss out on, especially as technology grows whilst the hustle and bustle life takes over. This tool is so neat that they even named it that!

NEAT stands for Non- Exer-cise Activity Thermogenesis, simply put it is the level of energy we use outside our workouts, sports related activ-ity, eating or sleeping (yes we burn calories sleeping, but will save that for another article). Studies are starting to show that our NEAT levels are critical to increasing our metabolism, burning more calories and thus improving our body composi-tion. But the best part of NEAT is it is so easy to improve your levels, free and you fits it right into your lifestyle.

In fact raising your NEAT level is so easy you can do

it reading this article. Quite simply stand up and take a walk around the room, that move-ment alone will act as a small boost on your metabolic rate

compared to being sat down. Being more active is really the key to raising you NEAT levels, every opportunity you have to stand up, walk around and move your body do it as every little helps…

Some great ways to boost your NEAT levels include

• Gardening• Washing your car by hand• Walking to the shops

rather than driving• Taking a relaxing stroll• Dancing round the house

to your favourite music.

Go on do it, enjoy the summer get more active

and move your body!

The persistent problem of incompetent and rogue traders in the UK’s home repair, maintenance and improvement market is the source of great distress, disruption and financial loss

for many homeowners. It also causes huge political concern and frustration, and pernicious reputational damage for an entire industry where the good,

hardworking majority are unfairly tarred with the same brush as the cowboys. TRUSTMARK was launched to the public in January 2006 as the Government backed quality scheme that signposts people to reputable local tradesmen.

TrustMark is the Government backed quality scheme that signposts people to reputable local firms and expert tradespeople working to Government-endorsed standards.

“ TrustMark is an easy way for consumers to identify

tradesmen who have agreed to abide by industry standards

of competence and fair trading.” Consumer Minister,

Nearly 450 family carers have signed up for their Discount Card through the charity Carers in Bedfordshire and are benefiting from various discounts in the area. More than 60 businesses have joined forces with the charity to offer discounts to unpaid family carers. Businesses involved include branches of Boots, Virgin Holidays, Haven Holidays and Timpsons as well as therapists, solicitors, pharmacies, cafes, jewellers and restaurants all across Central Bedfordshire. The card is free and easy to apply for – carers who live in Central Bedfordshire can simply complete a short form and supply a passport size photo. You may then use the card in any business which displays the discount card logo in their windows. Chief Executive Helen Satterthwaite says, “We know that when you are looking after someone money can be tight so, with help from Central Bedfordshire Council we have introduced the Discount Card.” New users of the card have recently said, “I used my card to get my sofas dry cleaned and it has saved me £10.” Another carer commented that it has certainly raised awareness, “I used my card in Boots in Biggleswade, and the per-son who served me was very interested in how I was a carer.” Local business owner, Lindsey Copperwheat of TC Kitchens was one of the first businesses to sign up and says, “From personal experience,

I know what a struggle it can be to look after someone at home when they are disabled or have a long-term condition. The card is a way for my business to do something practical to help and I would encourage other local businesses to join this discount scheme to reward unpaid family carers”. Carers in Bedfordshire is a charity which helps family carers cope with the mental and physical stresses arising from their role. Carers who ap-ply for a card will be invited to register for the full range of Carers in Bedfordshire’s services. For more information and how to apply for a Discount Card, or if you would like to sign your business up go to www.carersinbeds.org.uk/discountcard

It’s the Law

Why do I need a Will? You can protect your family, home and hard-earned savings by stating exactly how you would like your estate distributed and prevent the law from deciding this.

Who are the people who need to be in it?Anyone you wish to pass your wealth onto. This could be family, friends, or organisations , such as a preferred charity (free of tax).

How do I start making a Will?Careful planning is required to decide what you would like to leave to whom and then talk to your family.

It is advisable to speak to a solicitor to avoid mistakes and disputes later on.

How do I prepare before meeting my solicitor? It would be useful to have the following information:

• A list of your assets; property, savings, pensions, insurance policies, shares, family heirlooms, bank and building society accounts.

• A list of those you’d like to leave money or possessions to.

• Decide whether you would like to leave anything to a preferred charity.

• Consider who will look after your children aged 18 years or less.

• Choose an ‘Executor’- the person who will be carrying out your wishes.

Where can I keep my Will? You may choose to have this at home, with a solicitor or at a bank.

It’s important to tell someone where your Will is - 1/10 fail to tell someone!

What do I do if my circumstances change? If you have married, purchased a property or have had children etc. you may need to amend your Will which could either be done by having a Codicil prepared or if large changes are necessary a new Will would be advised.

For generations, men have taken shelter from life down the shed. A place to potter about with tools and never quite finish projects. It has always been a refuge as much as somewhere to fix things. Now sheds have also become a social movement – a place for retired men to gather, share skills shoulder to shoulder and shake off loneliness.Based on an Australian model that has seen 1,000 Men’s Sheds opening across the continent.

There are now 299 sheds open97 in development and an average of3 opening each week and an approximate5980 “Shedders” or Shed members all over England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place to feel at home and pursue practical interests with a high degree of autonomy.

A Men’s Shed offers a group of men a place to share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their

own, at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social iinteraction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.

A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Although Sheds mostly attract older men, some have men of any age, women and young people. Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a Shed is not a building, which some don’t have, but the network of relationships between the members.

See mensshed.org.uk to find a shed or, maybe, form your own.

SAVE THE KNEES

A common issue that can affect individuals who are required to kneel frequently e.g. Gardeners, is Bursitis, otherwise known as ‘Housemaid’s Knee’. Recurrent stress on the knees can result in inflammation of the fluid filled cavity over the kneecap, and though it is a relatively minor condition it can be pretty uncomfortable! Damage to ligaments, tendons and cartilage, and even stress fractures caused by recurrent ‘stresses’ to the knees can also occur - each issue having the ability to put you out of action.

In order to prevent damage to your knees, the use of good quality knee-pads and/or Fitters Trousers (which have special knee-pad pockets) is a good idea. Knee-pads work effectively to cushion the blow when you kneel down, and can reduce the impact of repeated stress on the knee joint. You can find a variety of good quality kneepads on RuggedTough.com available from quality workwear brands like Jobman, Blaklader and Tranemo.

Budget 2016 for Personal Finances PERSONAL ALLOWANCE, TAX BANDS AND RATESThe basic rate of tax is currently 20%. The band of income tax-able at this rate is £31,785 so that the threshold at which the 40% band applies is £42,385 for those who are entitled to the full basic personal allowance. Legislation has already been en-acted to increase the basic rate limit to £32,000 for 2016/17. The higher rate threshold will therefore rise to £43,000 in 2016/17 for those entitled to the full personal allowance. The additional rate of tax of 45% remains payable on taxable income above £150,000. The personal allowance will be increased to £11,500 and the basic rate limit increased to £33,500 for 2017/18. The higher rate threshold will therefore rise to £45,000 for those entitled to the full personal allowance. TAX ON SAVINGS INCOMESavings income is income such as bank and building society interest. In 2015/16 some indi-viduals qualify for a 0% starting rate of tax on savings income up to £5,000. However, the rate is not available if taxable non-savings income exceeds the starting rate limit. The starting rate limit remains at £5,000 for 2016/17. In addition, from 2016/17 the Savings Allowance (SA) will ap-ply to savings income. Income within the SA will be taxed at

a new 0% rate (the ‘savings nil rate’). However, the available SA in a tax year will depend on the individual’s marginal rate of income tax. Individuals taxed at up to the basic rate of tax will have an SA of £1,000. For higher rate taxpayers, the SA will be £500 whilst no SA is due to additional rate taxpay-ers. Alongside the introduction of the SA, banks and building societies will cease to deduct tax from account interest they pay to customers. INDIVIDUAL SAVINGS ACCOUNT (ISAS)The overall ISA savings limit is £15,240 for 2015/16 and will re-main at this figure for 2016/17. Two changes are proposed with effect from 6 April 2016. The following changes will be made to the existing ISA Regulations: Savers will be allowed to re-place cash they have withdrawn from their account earlier in a tax year, without this replace-ment counting towards the annual ISA limit for that year. This flexibility will be available in relation to both current year and earlier years’ ISA savings where provided for in the terms and conditions of a ‘flexible ISA.’A third ISA, the Innovative Finance ISA, is being introduced for loans arranged via a peer to peer (P2P) platform. The total an individual can save each year into all ISAs will be increased from £15,240 to £20,000 from April 2017. LIFETIME ISAA new Lifetime ISA will be avail-able from April 2017 for adults under the age of 40. Individuals will be able to contribute up to

£4,000 per year and receive a 25% bonus from the govern-ment. Funds, including the government bonus, can be used to buy a first home at any time from 12 months after opening the account, and can be with-drawn from age 60 completely tax-free. HELP TO SAVEThe government has announced the introduction of a new type of savings account aimed at low income working households. In-dividuals in low income working households will be able to save up to £50 a month into a Help to Save account and receive a 50% government bonus after two years. Account holders can then choose to continue saving under the scheme for a further two years. The scheme will be open to all adults in receipt of Universal Credit with minimum weekly household earnings equivalent to 16 hours at the National Living Wage or those in receipt of Working Tax Credits. Accounts will be available no later than April 2018. PHASED ROLLOUT OF TAX-FREE CHILDCAREThe government has announced it will introduce Tax-Free Childcare in early 2017. Tax-Free Childcare will be gradually rolled out to children under 12 with the parents of the youngest children being able to enter the scheme first. The scheme will be open to all eligible parents by the end of 2017. The existing scheme, Employer-Supported Childcare, will remain open to new entrants until April 2018 to support the transition between the schemes.

WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE EXPLAIN…THE OFFSIDE RULEBy Tom Hancock

Saturday 21st May is FA cup final day. Footie fans up and down the land will be involved in animated discussions along the lines of...“It should definitely be banned. It’d open up the field and create more goal-scoring op-portunities. Defenders would have to be more alert.”“Are you mad? You’d get play-ers hanging around the goal line waiting for a touch. It’d be easier to score but so boring it wouldn’t be worth watching…”“Like Bayern Munich versus Arsenal?”“Yeah, exactly. Fancy another pint?”They are of course referring to the notoriously difficult to understand offside rule.

The offside rule has attained mythical status over the years. It states:A player is offside when the ball is kicked by a team-mate (that bit is important) if the referee thinks he satisfies all four of the following:

1. He is in his opponents’ half of the field2. He is nearer the opponents’ goal line than the ball, i.e. in front of the ball3. He is nearer the opponents’ goal line than the second last

opponent, i.e. in front of him (The last opponent is generally the goalkeeper)At this point I need to make clear that being offside in itself is not an offence. He is only classed as offside if, as well as satisfying the previous three points, he is:4. Deemed by the referee to have participated in the area of active play. And this is the bit of the offside rule which causes all the arguments because it’s open to debate what ‘participated in the area of active play’ actually means.FIFA tried to clarify the definition back in 2005 with the followingInterfering with play by touch-ing the ballObstructing an opponent trying to get to the ballGaining an advantage from being in an offside position - including playing a ball which has rebounded from the post or crossbar.Judging by the debates which still rage up and down the land I’m not entirely sure that FIFA has laid that one to rest.

The FA Cup kicked off in 1871, making it the world's oldest football cup competition.

The only club still in existence to win three FA Cup finals in a row is Blackburn Rovers (1884 to 1886). They had 24 consecutive match wins in that time.

In 1888, a match was held on Christmas Day, between Linfield Athletic and Cliftonville.

Ashley Cole holds the record for the most wins – he’s won seven times! Three wins were with Arsenal and four with Chelsea.

The current cup itself is a replica of one created in 1911, by Fattorini & Sons in Bradford.

Jimmy Speirs scored the winning goal for Bradford in 1911. He went on to be awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the First World War.

Arsenal hold the current record for most FA Cup wins (12).

Arsenal also holds the record for the most wins in the FA Women's Cup (13).

Manchester United was the first team to win the Cup after only playing top-division teams (1948).

In 1985, Kevin Moran became the first player to be sent off in an FA Cup final.

The FA Women's Cup began in 1970, although it was then called the Mitre Challenge Trophy.

The first FA Women's Cup winner (in 1972) was Southampton.

The Offside Trap

This involves the defending team collectively moving away from their goal to catch an opposition striker in an offside position. Clearly, this carries the dan-ger of the match officials not spotting the infraction and the striker being left facing only the goal keeper, and a great opportunity to score.

GardenMay is a busy time in the garden but also very rewarding as we start to see our plants come properly to life with lots of colour and scent to enjoy. So as the days warm up, it’s be outside enjoy-ing it all.

Jobs for the garden• Deadhead spring flowering bulbs, but let the

foliage grow until it yellows. • Deadhead and begin replacing pansies and

primroses as the blossoms fade• Flowering currant and forsythia shrubs can

be pruned as soon as they have finished flowering. Remove one -third of the oldest flowering stems.

• Erect supports for tall growing plants such as Delphinium, Lupin and monkshood.

• Give some of your border perennials the 'Chelsea Chop'. If you cut some of them back by about half now it will delay flower-ing but extend the display longer in your garden. And you can try propagating the cuttings for new plants.

• Spray roses with fungicide to ward against black spot and mildew. Repeat every fort-night until the autumn. Feed with a foliar feed and beware greenfly – treat immedi-ately if an infestation occurs.

• Plant strawberry plants in the ground, in planters or in hanging baskets for a pretty and delicious crop this summer.

• Earth up potatoes, draw the soil over the plants as this prevents sunlight getting to the tubers, which turns them green and renders them poisonous.

• Plant out brassicas (net them to prevent birds eating them) and grow short term crops such as lettuces and radishes between them to maximise the space. Sweet peppers, tomatoes, aubergines and salads can also be planted in the greenhouse

Plant of the Month – Allium Allium is the Latin word for garlic, and in-cludes onions, chives, spring onions and also ornamental alliums, grown for their showy flower heads. They can be sown as seeds in spring, usually only for edible varieties, or ornamental varieties are planted as bulbs in autumn, or plants in spring.

Ornamental Allium come in wide range of sizes, A. giganticum can be 120cm high, A. Ivory Queen is only 25cm high, and shades of blue - A. caeruleum, purple - A. Purple Sensation, white -A. nigrum and yellow - A. moly. Even when the plants die back, the dried flower heads look attractive in the garden, or can be cut for indoor display. Al-liums are generally plants of sunny and well drained soils and can be used in eye catching rows or else in a more cottage garden style, with isolated small groups to equally good effect. Alliums are good nectar bars for bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Baskets and ContainersHanging baskets, containers and flower pouches allow you to decorate your walls, fences and patios with colourful

flowers and foliage! They can really brighten up a dull area whether it’s in sunny or shady position.

For a summer show, start planting now but keep tender plants protected until the end of May or early June in case of late frosts. As a general rule use one plant per inch of basket diameter – so 12 plants per 12 inch basket, but less with big-ger plants like gerani-ums and fuchsia. Add water retaining granules and controlled release fertiliser to a multi-pur-pose compost. This will prevent your containers drying out too quickly and will help feed your plants throughout the growing season.

You can grow all sorts of plants in baskets and containers not just the traditional basket/bed-ding plants; why not try trailing tomatoes or herbs in baskets; perennials or vegetables and even shrubs and small trees in containers. Make sure you choose plants that suit your position, petunia, verbena and bidens for sunny baskets, geranium, viola and busy lizzies if you have more shade. Most perennials, climbers and shrubs can be grown in containers so just choose the plants you like and enjoy a colourful display from early summer right through until the first frosts of autumn!

I’m a huge fan of biological warfare.

But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners.

Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Lady-bird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters.

Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses.

The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs

and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%.

Frogs and toads are great slug-eaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground.

Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself.

The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nema-todes and mites. Nematodes

are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the pro-cess. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants.

Predatory mites are also avail-able to target red spider mite and thrips.

All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment.

Of course with organic garden-ing you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful...

SPRING READ

A gripping psychological thriller, a story of dark secrets, obsession and suspense, centring on the disappearance of an 18-year-old from an idyllic village. Local gardener, Kate, is sure the police are missing something and that someone in the village knows more than they’re letting on.

This is an unusually short novel by Kate Mosse at just 250 pages.

As in the Labyrinth trilogy she embeds the story in the medi-eval history of the Cathars (an ancient sect of Christianity, long since destroyed) in the region. Are there such things as ghosts or do we create them in our mind to deal with the events that appear doomed to reoccur

throughout history? Or are ghosts merely the reminder of mistakes that we are con-demned to repeat?

A life-affirming tale about an 89 year old woman who encoun-ters a young soldier who’s been traumatised by WWII.

The unforgettable and completely captivating new novel from Sarah Winman, author of the international bestseller WHEN GOD WAS A RABBIT.

Marvellous Ways is eighty-nine years old and has lived alone in a remote Cornish creek for nearly all her life. Lately she’s taken to spending her days sitting on a mooring stone by the river with a telescope. She’s waiting for something - she’s not sure what, but she’ll know it when she sees it.

The true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice.

An irreverent, comedy war drama about a journalist who goes to Kabul, Afghanistan.

A beautiful doctor and a wise-cracking taxi driver help an American businessman (Tom Hanks) who's trying to close the deal of a lifetime in Saudi Arabia.

Dear ReaderDid you know that your Bee Local Magazine is completely independent? Run by just one person (yes me on page 2), no teams of writers, journalists, editors or proof-readers, just lil ol’ me! I make my living by selling advertising in the magazine. In this online world I believe there is still a place for a little book that arrives through your door and so I would like to ask your help. RecipeSpring is here and this light and refreshing pudding is the perfect end to a meal or perhaps served at a garden party!

Makes 6-8 slices

Ingredients200g readymade short-crust pastry8 eggs320g caster sugar4 large lemons, juice and rind½ pint double cream

To serveicing sugar, for dustingsingle creamraspberries

Traditional Lemon Tart

Method

Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5.

Roll out the pastry and use to line a large quiche dish (25cm/10in diameter). Line the pastry with tin foil and fill with dried beans or rice to hold the base in place.

Bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and baking beans and bake for a further 5 minutes.

Reduce the oven tempera-ture to 150C/300F/Gas 2.

In a mixing bowl, lightly beat the eggs and the sugar (do not whisk).

Add the lemon juice and rind and stir.

Finally add the cream and stir thoroughly but again, do not whisk.

Transfer the cream mixture into the pastry case and cook in the centre of the oven for about 35 minutes until set (the mixture should be be firm to the touch).

Allow to cool completely, dust with icing sugar and serve with pouring cream and raspberries.

This will also make approximately 12 small tarts using a yorkshire pudding tray. The cooking time will be less.
