ARCHERY BASICS

This session gives participants a comprehensive overview of the sport of archery It is intended for students who have no archery experience to start building a good foundation for shooting You will be taught how to safely use basic archery equipment and the ldquoEleven Steps to Archery Successrdquo This is a fun hands-on experience with all equipment provided

BACKPACKING SKILLS

Take the mystery out of backpacking in Iowa and the Midwest with an overview of planning preparation and gear Along with local information learn how to choose a pack select proper clothing and footwear Plus wersquoll give you important notes on trail etiquette and Leave No Trace principals Wear comfortable clothing and boots or tennis shoes that can get muddy

BOATER EDUCATION 1

This classroom session will teach participants about boats how to navigate your boat Iowa laws safety equipment and emergency preparedness Whether you choose to go fishing sailing pleasure boating canoeing or kayaking taking a boater education course could save your life Completion of Boater Education Part 1 and 2 along with passing a written test will result in earning your Iowa Boater Education Certificate

Participants are familiarized with safety equipment and procedures to make their next trip to the water both safe and fun They learn to back a trailer start a motor tie basic knots for boating and run a power boat (weather permitting) Completion of the Boater Education Part 1 and 2 with passing a written test will result in earning your Iowa Boater Education Certificate

CANNING amp PRESERVING

Have you always wanted to learn how to preserve and can food but didnrsquot know where to start Come ready to learn about general canning and preserving You will learn how to get started what equipment is needed what vegetables amp meats can be preserved and the various methods of canning-water bath steam amp pressure canning Bring an appetite amp be ready to make and try delicious items from the garden amp field

Biking is a great way to get fit and enjoy the outdoors Learn a little about bicycle types basic bicycle maintenance safety and equipment Then enjoy the spring day by riding the Honey Creek bike trail with one of the resortrsquos bike rentals The guided ride will take you around theresort and through a variety of habitats

ABCrsquoS OF STATE PARKS

Take the opportunity to learn more about Honey Creek State Park and the other 84 State Parks in Iowa What parks are closest to you Learn about different opportunities and activites available to state park visitors Learn about the different lodging opportunities and how to book a campsite cabin or lodge via the online reservation system

Rasied Huntingrsquos Karin Holder will be leading this introductory session on the basic skills necessary to begin bowhunting in Iowa This course includes instructon in tracking identifying and interpreting animal tracks and signs scouting areas to hunt basic bowhunting equipment and much more Already have a hunting bow Bring it with you

FIREARM CLEANING amp MAINTENANCE

How often do I clean my firearm How far do I need to break down my gun What do I use and where What do I do with my ammunition These are some of the common questions that arise when an individual purchases a gun Learn to properly clean and maintain shotguns rifles and muzzleloaders

Yoursquove learned how to scout a lake and how to catch a fish Now what do you do Join us to learn how to fillet and skin different types of fish as well as different preparation techniques Yoursquoll have opportunities to sharpen knives prepare fish for cooking and then different cooking techniques Bring an open mind and a hungry belly

There is an entire grocery store of delicious local wild foods just waiting outside your backdoor This hands-on class focuses on how to identify key features of wild edible plants knowing when and what to sustainably harvest and how to prepare wild foods Flowers greens roots and shoots are just a few of the things that will be one the menu Come ready to help dig cut cook and most importantly ndash eat

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt and a fun way to get you and your friends and family outdoors In this hands-on class participants learn how to use their smartphones to join the fun Get the inside scoop on geocaching caches and Munzee Participants will then head outside to practice their skills finding a variety of ldquotreasuresrdquo

DUTCH OVEN COOKING

The versitility of a Dutch oven will amaze you See how easy it is to prepare crowd-pleasing meals around the campfire This session will cover how to choose your cookware prepare your kitchen and how to cook with the Dutch oven and coals Recipes will be shared and everyone will get a chance to help prepare and cook while sampling a variety of dishes even desserts

EXPLORE BOWFISHING

Bowfishing is a popular outdoor sport that allows you to combine the fun activities of archery and fishing During this session participants will learn how to shoot a bow reel in fish what kinds of fish to shoot and how to identify them You are encouraged to ldquotake a shotrdquo at this session whether or not you have any archery or fishing experience All of the needed bowfishing equipment will be provided

This session is classroom-based focused on learning the basics of safety and safe operation Topics will include personal protective equipment risk awareness and mitigation vehicle mechanics and characteristics planning for safe and enjoyable OHV recreation recreational opportunities in the state Iowa laws regarding OHV operation and rules for operating at Iowarsquos OHV parks This program will address both ATVs and side-by-sides

Start your next adventure See remote areas camp along the way The journey is part of the adventure Learn how to car camp or overland like a pro Participants will learn about campsite selection fire safety outdoor cooking techniques and packing your vehicle for such a trip

Learn the basics of water safety equipment how to enter and exit the kayak paddle strokes and other maneuvers Participants will practice kayaking skills on the lake so dress for the weather Snow hats and gloves have been worn in the past Kayaks and life jackets will be provided

LANDSCAPING FOR WILDLIFE

Have you ever left your phone in the vehicle and just went for a walk to forget your troubles Habitat and wildlife bring joy and relaxation to Iowans in a number of ways bird watching hunting fishing hiking wildlife-viewing and so many more Our wildlife comes in all shapes and sizes and so do their habitats This session will cover the basic needs of Iowarsquos wildlife and how you can provide these in your backyard or on your property

We will aspire to take wonderfully composed in-focus images including beautiful macro images (close-ups of flowers small critters etc) by the end of the class Participants should bring a digital point-andshoot or digital SLR camera and the user manual We will go outside and practice our new skills as well as discuss some of the ldquotechnicalrdquo aspects of photography

INTRODUCTION TO FIREARMS

Learn more about guns and safe firearms handling in this hands-on class Participants will become comfortable around firearms in a information-packed upbeat session The session will introduce different types of firearms how to load and unload various firearms ammunition types definitions of commonly used terms and the four basic rules of firearm safety Additionally wersquoll talk about firearm safety in the home and information on selecting and purchasing firearms

KAYAKING BASICS

We will take the knowledge gained in the morning and have some fun riding at the Rathbun Lake OHV Park Safety equipment will be required - helmets eye protection over-the-ankle boots long-sleeve shirts long pants and gloves Basic vehicle operation will be demonstrated and practiced prior to hitting the trails The Iowa Off-Highway Vehicle Association will be providing vehicles helmets and instruction Vehicles will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own machine if it is properly registered with the DNR

Join us on a mentored turkey hunt Wersquoll meet our mentors Saturday evening and then head out to the timber first thing Sunday morning This session will start early and may run late depending on the hunt Firearms and ammunition will be providedMake sure to dress in layers with the top layer camo or dark colors

Must attend Talking Turkey Intro and have completed hunter education A

valid Iowa hunting and habitat license and season 3 turkey tag required

POLLINATORS

Despite their small size pollinators play a huge role in our environment Did you know that one in three bites of your food requires pollination Come to this session to learn about a wide array of pollinator- related topics and ways you can help Specific topics will include pollinator and wildflower identification pollinator habitat and management pollinator-friendly landscaping and monarch tagging Yoursquoll also get the opportunity to make seedballs to plant beneficial wildflowers on your ownproperty

During the first part of the class wersquoll discuss different types of rifles and muzzleloaders their uses and other equipment needs During the second part participants will be out on the range where they will be able to try shooting different firearms All firearms safety equipment and ammunition will be provided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

SHOTGUN BASICS

This class will provide an overview of shotgun types ammunition usues and safety Participants will have the oppotunity to practice shotgun techniques with an emphasis on the use of a shotgun for hunting Shotguns safety equipment and ammunition will be povided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

TALKING TURKEY INTRO

Cut out the grocery store and harvest your family a wild turkey This session will introduce new hunters to the basics of turkey hunting and preparing them for the table Topics covered will include turkey habitat hunting techniques amp equipment turkey calling and field dressing Participants will try a few samples of cooked turkey and learn the culinary approaches to this favored bird Participants will listen to turkey calls and try their hand at calling too This is a prerequisite for the mentored turkey hunt

WHATrsquoS SMOKING

WHATrsquoS SUP

Stand-up Paddling (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in America This class will cover a short history of SUP parts of the board and paddle carrying and transporting how to paddle and turn stroke techniques launching from the shore and dock ndash all with plenty of paddling time Come walk on water but prepare to get wet

In case of inclement weather wersquoll head to the pool so bring your swim

suit just in case

Introduction to a variety of fishing equiptment used to catch different species of pan fish This includes rods reels poles and a demonstration on how to rig them and tie basic knots for fishing Discussion of laws regulations and ethics related to pan fishing and how to identfiy common pan fish Thenput your knowledge to use when we go to the water to fish

Iowarsquos wild game is some of the healthiest and most nutritious meat for the table Learn to make the most of your harvest with proper preparation and tasty recipes Bring a hungry appetite and a willingness to try cleaning game yourself

PAN FISHING

Smell the smoke Itrsquos more than just backyard grilling nowadays and this session will give you all you need to know to take your BBQ to the next level Armed with enough know-how to serve up scrumptious smoked meats fish and wild game that arenrsquot tough or dry but are flavorful and just right Yoursquoll learn about cooking the old fashioned waywith smoke From rubs to pellets and everything in between Come armed with questions and a hunger to learn

The goal of the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) scholarship program is to broaden participation in the 2018 weekend workshop to women 18 years old and older who would be unable to attend without financial assistance BOW encourages anyone to apply for a scholarship However preference will be given to first-time attendees and those promoting diversity in outdoors education across the state through their community affiliations culture region andor profession

ndash Binoculars and a camera are nice to have if you plan to hike the resort trails ndash There is an indoor pool and hot tub so you may want to bring a swimsuit

At each of our workshops Friends of BOW holds a silent (and sometimes not-so-silent) auction to help us cover workshop costs and attendance scholarships Itrsquos a lot of fun and we get to send participants home with some wonderful things We are asking each participant to donate something to the auction It doesnrsquot have to be anything big ndash but we wonrsquot complain if it is It doesnrsquot even have to be anything new Just bring something if you can

This session gives participants a comprehensive overview of the sport of archery It is intended for students who have no archery experience to start building a good foundation for shooting You will be taught how to safely use basic archery equipment and the ldquoEleven Steps to Archery Successrdquo This is a fun hands-on experience with all equipment provided

Take the mystery out of backpacking in Iowa and the Midwest with an overview of planning preparation and gear Along with local information learn how to choose a pack select proper clothing and footwear Plus wersquoll give you important notes on trail etiquette and Leave No Trace principals Wear comfortable clothing and boots or tennis shoes that can get muddy

BOATER EDUCATION 1

This classroom session will teach participants about boats how to navigate your boat Iowa laws safety equipment and emergency preparedness Whether you choose to go fishing sailing pleasure boating canoeing or kayaking taking a boater education course could save your life Completion of Boater Education Part 1 and 2 along with passing a written test will result in earning your Iowa Boater Education Certificate

How often do I clean my firearm How far do I need to break down my gun What do I use and where What do I do with my ammunition These are some of the common questions that arise when an individual purchases a gun Learn to properly clean and maintain shotguns rifles and muzzleloaders

Yoursquove learned how to scout a lake and how to catch a fish Now what do you do Join us to learn how to fillet and skin different types of fish as well as different preparation techniques Yoursquoll have opportunities to sharpen knives prepare fish for cooking and then different cooking techniques Bring an open mind and a hungry belly

There is an entire grocery store of delicious local wild foods just waiting outside your backdoor This hands-on class focuses on how to identify key features of wild edible plants knowing when and what to sustainably harvest and how to prepare wild foods Flowers greens roots and shoots are just a few of the things that will be one the menu Come ready to help dig cut cook and most importantly ndash eat

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt and a fun way to get you and your friends and family outdoors In this hands-on class participants learn how to use their smartphones to join the fun Get the inside scoop on geocaching caches and Munzee Participants will then head outside to practice their skills finding a variety of ldquotreasuresrdquo

DUTCH OVEN COOKING

The versitility of a Dutch oven will amaze you See how easy it is to prepare crowd-pleasing meals around the campfire This session will cover how to choose your cookware prepare your kitchen and how to cook with the Dutch oven and coals Recipes will be shared and everyone will get a chance to help prepare and cook while sampling a variety of dishes even desserts

EXPLORE BOWFISHING

Bowfishing is a popular outdoor sport that allows you to combine the fun activities of archery and fishing During this session participants will learn how to shoot a bow reel in fish what kinds of fish to shoot and how to identify them You are encouraged to ldquotake a shotrdquo at this session whether or not you have any archery or fishing experience All of the needed bowfishing equipment will be provided

Start your next adventure See remote areas camp along the way The journey is part of the adventure Learn how to car camp or overland like a pro Participants will learn about campsite selection fire safety outdoor cooking techniques and packing your vehicle for such a trip

Learn the basics of water safety equipment how to enter and exit the kayak paddle strokes and other maneuvers Participants will practice kayaking skills on the lake so dress for the weather Snow hats and gloves have been worn in the past Kayaks and life jackets will be provided

LANDSCAPING FOR WILDLIFE

Have you ever left your phone in the vehicle and just went for a walk to forget your troubles Habitat and wildlife bring joy and relaxation to Iowans in a number of ways bird watching hunting fishing hiking wildlife-viewing and so many more Our wildlife comes in all shapes and sizes and so do their habitats This session will cover the basic needs of Iowarsquos wildlife and how you can provide these in your backyard or on your property

We will aspire to take wonderfully composed in-focus images including beautiful macro images (close-ups of flowers small critters etc) by the end of the class Participants should bring a digital point-andshoot or digital SLR camera and the user manual We will go outside and practice our new skills as well as discuss some of the ldquotechnicalrdquo aspects of photography

INTRODUCTION TO FIREARMS

Learn more about guns and safe firearms handling in this hands-on class Participants will become comfortable around firearms in a information-packed upbeat session The session will introduce different types of firearms how to load and unload various firearms ammunition types definitions of commonly used terms and the four basic rules of firearm safety Additionally wersquoll talk about firearm safety in the home and information on selecting and purchasing firearms

We will take the knowledge gained in the morning and have some fun riding at the Rathbun Lake OHV Park Safety equipment will be required - helmets eye protection over-the-ankle boots long-sleeve shirts long pants and gloves Basic vehicle operation will be demonstrated and practiced prior to hitting the trails The Iowa Off-Highway Vehicle Association will be providing vehicles helmets and instruction Vehicles will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own machine if it is properly registered with the DNR

POLLINATORS

Despite their small size pollinators play a huge role in our environment Did you know that one in three bites of your food requires pollination Come to this session to learn about a wide array of pollinator- related topics and ways you can help Specific topics will include pollinator and wildflower identification pollinator habitat and management pollinator-friendly landscaping and monarch tagging Yoursquoll also get the opportunity to make seedballs to plant beneficial wildflowers on your ownproperty

During the first part of the class wersquoll discuss different types of rifles and muzzleloaders their uses and other equipment needs During the second part participants will be out on the range where they will be able to try shooting different firearms All firearms safety equipment and ammunition will be provided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

SHOTGUN BASICS

This class will provide an overview of shotgun types ammunition usues and safety Participants will have the oppotunity to practice shotgun techniques with an emphasis on the use of a shotgun for hunting Shotguns safety equipment and ammunition will be povided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

TALKING TURKEY INTRO

Cut out the grocery store and harvest your family a wild turkey This session will introduce new hunters to the basics of turkey hunting and preparing them for the table Topics covered will include turkey habitat hunting techniques amp equipment turkey calling and field dressing Participants will try a few samples of cooked turkey and learn the culinary approaches to this favored bird Participants will listen to turkey calls and try their hand at calling too This is a prerequisite for the mentored turkey hunt

Stand-up Paddling (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in America This class will cover a short history of SUP parts of the board and paddle carrying and transporting how to paddle and turn stroke techniques launching from the shore and dock ndash all with plenty of paddling time Come walk on water but prepare to get wet

In case of inclement weather wersquoll head to the pool so bring your swim

suit just in case

How often do I clean my firearm How far do I need to break down my gun What do I use and where What do I do with my ammunition These are some of the common questions that arise when an individual purchases a gun Learn to properly clean and maintain shotguns rifles and muzzleloaders

Yoursquove learned how to scout a lake and how to catch a fish Now what do you do Join us to learn how to fillet and skin different types of fish as well as different preparation techniques Yoursquoll have opportunities to sharpen knives prepare fish for cooking and then different cooking techniques Bring an open mind and a hungry belly

Start your next adventure See remote areas camp along the way The journey is part of the adventure Learn how to car camp or overland like a pro Participants will learn about campsite selection fire safety outdoor cooking techniques and packing your vehicle for such a trip

Learn the basics of water safety equipment how to enter and exit the kayak paddle strokes and other maneuvers Participants will practice kayaking skills on the lake so dress for the weather Snow hats and gloves have been worn in the past Kayaks and life jackets will be provided

LANDSCAPING FOR WILDLIFE

Have you ever left your phone in the vehicle and just went for a walk to forget your troubles Habitat and wildlife bring joy and relaxation to Iowans in a number of ways bird watching hunting fishing hiking wildlife-viewing and so many more Our wildlife comes in all shapes and sizes and so do their habitats This session will cover the basic needs of Iowarsquos wildlife and how you can provide these in your backyard or on your property

We will aspire to take wonderfully composed in-focus images including beautiful macro images (close-ups of flowers small critters etc) by the end of the class Participants should bring a digital point-andshoot or digital SLR camera and the user manual We will go outside and practice our new skills as well as discuss some of the ldquotechnicalrdquo aspects of photography

INTRODUCTION TO FIREARMS

Learn more about guns and safe firearms handling in this hands-on class Participants will become comfortable around firearms in a information-packed upbeat session The session will introduce different types of firearms how to load and unload various firearms ammunition types definitions of commonly used terms and the four basic rules of firearm safety Additionally wersquoll talk about firearm safety in the home and information on selecting and purchasing firearms

We will take the knowledge gained in the morning and have some fun riding at the Rathbun Lake OHV Park Safety equipment will be required - helmets eye protection over-the-ankle boots long-sleeve shirts long pants and gloves Basic vehicle operation will be demonstrated and practiced prior to hitting the trails The Iowa Off-Highway Vehicle Association will be providing vehicles helmets and instruction Vehicles will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own machine if it is properly registered with the DNR

Despite their small size pollinators play a huge role in our environment Did you know that one in three bites of your food requires pollination Come to this session to learn about a wide array of pollinator- related topics and ways you can help Specific topics will include pollinator and wildflower identification pollinator habitat and management pollinator-friendly landscaping and monarch tagging Yoursquoll also get the opportunity to make seedballs to plant beneficial wildflowers on your ownproperty

During the first part of the class wersquoll discuss different types of rifles and muzzleloaders their uses and other equipment needs During the second part participants will be out on the range where they will be able to try shooting different firearms All firearms safety equipment and ammunition will be provided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

This class will provide an overview of shotgun types ammunition usues and safety Participants will have the oppotunity to practice shotgun techniques with an emphasis on the use of a shotgun for hunting Shotguns safety equipment and ammunition will be povided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

TALKING TURKEY INTRO

Cut out the grocery store and harvest your family a wild turkey This session will introduce new hunters to the basics of turkey hunting and preparing them for the table Topics covered will include turkey habitat hunting techniques amp equipment turkey calling and field dressing Participants will try a few samples of cooked turkey and learn the culinary approaches to this favored bird Participants will listen to turkey calls and try their hand at calling too This is a prerequisite for the mentored turkey hunt

Stand-up Paddling (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in America This class will cover a short history of SUP parts of the board and paddle carrying and transporting how to paddle and turn stroke techniques launching from the shore and dock ndash all with plenty of paddling time Come walk on water but prepare to get wet

Yoursquove learned how to scout a lake and how to catch a fish Now what do you do Join us to learn how to fillet and skin different types of fish as well as different preparation techniques Yoursquoll have opportunities to sharpen knives prepare fish for cooking and then different cooking techniques Bring an open mind and a hungry belly

Start your next adventure See remote areas camp along the way The journey is part of the adventure Learn how to car camp or overland like a pro Participants will learn about campsite selection fire safety outdoor cooking techniques and packing your vehicle for such a trip

Learn the basics of water safety equipment how to enter and exit the kayak paddle strokes and other maneuvers Participants will practice kayaking skills on the lake so dress for the weather Snow hats and gloves have been worn in the past Kayaks and life jackets will be provided

LANDSCAPING FOR WILDLIFE

Have you ever left your phone in the vehicle and just went for a walk to forget your troubles Habitat and wildlife bring joy and relaxation to Iowans in a number of ways bird watching hunting fishing hiking wildlife-viewing and so many more Our wildlife comes in all shapes and sizes and so do their habitats This session will cover the basic needs of Iowarsquos wildlife and how you can provide these in your backyard or on your property

We will aspire to take wonderfully composed in-focus images including beautiful macro images (close-ups of flowers small critters etc) by the end of the class Participants should bring a digital point-andshoot or digital SLR camera and the user manual We will go outside and practice our new skills as well as discuss some of the ldquotechnicalrdquo aspects of photography

INTRODUCTION TO FIREARMS

Learn more about guns and safe firearms handling in this hands-on class Participants will become comfortable around firearms in a information-packed upbeat session The session will introduce different types of firearms how to load and unload various firearms ammunition types definitions of commonly used terms and the four basic rules of firearm safety Additionally wersquoll talk about firearm safety in the home and information on selecting and purchasing firearms

POLLINATORS

Despite their small size pollinators play a huge role in our environment Did you know that one in three bites of your food requires pollination Come to this session to learn about a wide array of pollinator- related topics and ways you can help Specific topics will include pollinator and wildflower identification pollinator habitat and management pollinator-friendly landscaping and monarch tagging Yoursquoll also get the opportunity to make seedballs to plant beneficial wildflowers on your ownproperty

During the first part of the class wersquoll discuss different types of rifles and muzzleloaders their uses and other equipment needs During the second part participants will be out on the range where they will be able to try shooting different firearms All firearms safety equipment and ammunition will be provided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

SHOTGUN BASICS

This class will provide an overview of shotgun types ammunition usues and safety Participants will have the oppotunity to practice shotgun techniques with an emphasis on the use of a shotgun for hunting Shotguns safety equipment and ammunition will be povided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

TALKING TURKEY INTRO

Cut out the grocery store and harvest your family a wild turkey This session will introduce new hunters to the basics of turkey hunting and preparing them for the table Topics covered will include turkey habitat hunting techniques amp equipment turkey calling and field dressing Participants will try a few samples of cooked turkey and learn the culinary approaches to this favored bird Participants will listen to turkey calls and try their hand at calling too This is a prerequisite for the mentored turkey hunt

Stand-up Paddling (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in America This class will cover a short history of SUP parts of the board and paddle carrying and transporting how to paddle and turn stroke techniques launching from the shore and dock ndash all with plenty of paddling time Come walk on water but prepare to get wet

In case of inclement weather wersquoll head to the pool so bring your swim

This clinic will begin on Saturday with four sessions led by some of Iowarsquos most passionate female bird hunters The sessions will provide instruction on everything from bird habitat places to hunt necessary gear firearms hunting methods selecting and training bird dogs and so much more On Sunday wersquoll finish with breakfast followed by a morning bird hunt Once the hunt is over the instructors will assist you with field dressing and share some of their favorite recipes and uses of the harvest

Start your next adventure See remote areas camp along the way The journey is part of the adventure Learn how to car camp or overland like a pro Participants will learn about campsite selection fire safety outdoor cooking techniques and packing your vehicle for such a trip

Learn the basics of water safety equipment how to enter and exit the kayak paddle strokes and other maneuvers Participants will practice kayaking skills on the lake so dress for the weather Snow hats and gloves have been worn in the past Kayaks and life jackets will be provided

LANDSCAPING FOR WILDLIFE

Have you ever left your phone in the vehicle and just went for a walk to forget your troubles Habitat and wildlife bring joy and relaxation to Iowans in a number of ways bird watching hunting fishing hiking wildlife-viewing and so many more Our wildlife comes in all shapes and sizes and so do their habitats This session will cover the basic needs of Iowarsquos wildlife and how you can provide these in your backyard or on your property

We will aspire to take wonderfully composed in-focus images including beautiful macro images (close-ups of flowers small critters etc) by the end of the class Participants should bring a digital point-andshoot or digital SLR camera and the user manual We will go outside and practice our new skills as well as discuss some of the ldquotechnicalrdquo aspects of photography

INTRODUCTION TO FIREARMS

Learn more about guns and safe firearms handling in this hands-on class Participants will become comfortable around firearms in a information-packed upbeat session The session will introduce different types of firearms how to load and unload various firearms ammunition types definitions of commonly used terms and the four basic rules of firearm safety Additionally wersquoll talk about firearm safety in the home and information on selecting and purchasing firearms

We will take the knowledge gained in the morning and have some fun riding at the Rathbun Lake OHV Park Safety equipment will be required - helmets eye protection over-the-ankle boots long-sleeve shirts long pants and gloves Basic vehicle operation will be demonstrated and practiced prior to hitting the trails The Iowa Off-Highway Vehicle Association will be providing vehicles helmets and instruction Vehicles will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own machine if it is properly registered with the DNR

POLLINATORS

Despite their small size pollinators play a huge role in our environment Did you know that one in three bites of your food requires pollination Come to this session to learn about a wide array of pollinator- related topics and ways you can help Specific topics will include pollinator and wildflower identification pollinator habitat and management pollinator-friendly landscaping and monarch tagging Yoursquoll also get the opportunity to make seedballs to plant beneficial wildflowers on your ownproperty

During the first part of the class wersquoll discuss different types of rifles and muzzleloaders their uses and other equipment needs During the second part participants will be out on the range where they will be able to try shooting different firearms All firearms safety equipment and ammunition will be provided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

SHOTGUN BASICS

This class will provide an overview of shotgun types ammunition usues and safety Participants will have the oppotunity to practice shotgun techniques with an emphasis on the use of a shotgun for hunting Shotguns safety equipment and ammunition will be povided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

TALKING TURKEY INTRO

Cut out the grocery store and harvest your family a wild turkey This session will introduce new hunters to the basics of turkey hunting and preparing them for the table Topics covered will include turkey habitat hunting techniques amp equipment turkey calling and field dressing Participants will try a few samples of cooked turkey and learn the culinary approaches to this favored bird Participants will listen to turkey calls and try their hand at calling too This is a prerequisite for the mentored turkey hunt

Stand-up Paddling (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in America This class will cover a short history of SUP parts of the board and paddle carrying and transporting how to paddle and turn stroke techniques launching from the shore and dock ndash all with plenty of paddling time Come walk on water but prepare to get wet

In case of inclement weather wersquoll head to the pool so bring your swim

suit just in case

Introduction to a variety of fishing equiptment used to catch different species of pan fish This includes rods reels poles and a demonstration on how to rig them and tie basic knots for fishing Discussion of laws regulations and ethics related to pan fishing and how to identfiy common pan fish Thenput your knowledge to use when we go to the water to fish

This clinic will begin on Saturday with four sessions led by some of Iowarsquos most passionate female bird hunters The sessions will provide instruction on everything from bird habitat places to hunt necessary gear firearms hunting methods selecting and training bird dogs and so much more On Sunday wersquoll finish with breakfast followed by a morning bird hunt Once the hunt is over the instructors will assist you with field dressing and share some of their favorite recipes and uses of the harvest

Despite their small size pollinators play a huge role in our environment Did you know that one in three bites of your food requires pollination Come to this session to learn about a wide array of pollinator- related topics and ways you can help Specific topics will include pollinator and wildflower identification pollinator habitat and management pollinator-friendly landscaping and monarch tagging Yoursquoll also get the opportunity to make seedballs to plant beneficial wildflowers on your ownproperty

During the first part of the class wersquoll discuss different types of rifles and muzzleloaders their uses and other equipment needs During the second part participants will be out on the range where they will be able to try shooting different firearms All firearms safety equipment and ammunition will be provided Must have taken the Intro to Firearms course or completed hunter education

TALKING TURKEY INTRO

Cut out the grocery store and harvest your family a wild turkey This session will introduce new hunters to the basics of turkey hunting and preparing them for the table Topics covered will include turkey habitat hunting techniques amp equipment turkey calling and field dressing Participants will try a few samples of cooked turkey and learn the culinary approaches to this favored bird Participants will listen to turkey calls and try their hand at calling too This is a prerequisite for the mentored turkey hunt

Stand-up Paddling (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in America This class will cover a short history of SUP parts of the board and paddle carrying and transporting how to paddle and turn stroke techniques launching from the shore and dock ndash all with plenty of paddling time Come walk on water but prepare to get wet

In case of inclement weather wersquoll head to the pool so bring your swim

suit just in case

Whether yoursquore a beginner or an experienced angler this is a unique opportunity to learn about casting techniques equipment and then head to the water Participants will become familiar with equipment used in freshwater fly fishing and will spend the day practicing their skills This day long workshop is being finalized so check wwwiowadnrgovbow for updates

Superior Hiking Trail Backpacking Trip Pingora Outdoors

Trip 1 May 17-20 2018 Trip 2 May 31- June 1 2018 Trip 3 June 21-24 2018

Join us for an amazing four day journey on the Superior Hiking Trail in Minnesota Wersquoll start at 9am on Thursday at Pingora Outdoors in Ankeny IA drive to Minnesota and spend the first evening near the trail head The next two full days will be spent backpacking on the Superior Hiking Trail and on Sunday wersquoll pack up and drive back to Ankeny The trip will include lodging all meals transportation and group gear Stunning overlooks of Lake Superior and cascading waterfalls will highlight this trip

Beyond BOW at the Range Olofson Shooting Range Summer 2018 Polk City IA

Ever wanted to try a pistol rifle shotgun or archery Join us for a day at the range The day will focus on teaching basic archery rifle shotgun and pistol safety shooting techniques and range etiquette All firearms bows and ammunition will be provided Once the shooting is done the instructors will teach you how take apart clean and store the firearms

Spend the day on the water practicing your skills This full day workshop will allow you to further your skills and gain confidence Kayaks paddles and lifejackets will be provided

Womenrsquos Upland Bird Hunting Clinic Pheasants Forever

November 17-18 2018 Iowa County IA

This clinic will begin on Saturday with four sessions led by some of Iowarsquos most passionate female bird hunters The sessions will provide instruction on everything from bird habitat places to hunt necessary gear firearms hunting methods selecting and training bird dogs and so much more On Sunday wersquoll finish with breakfast followed by a morning bird hunt Once the hunt is over the instructors will assist you with field dressing and share some of their favorite recipes and uses of the harvest

This clinic will begin on Saturday with four sessions led by some of Iowarsquos most passionate female bird hunters The sessions will provide instruction on everything from bird habitat places to hunt necessary gear firearms hunting methods selecting and training bird dogs and so much more On Sunday wersquoll finish with breakfast followed by a morning bird hunt Once the hunt is over the instructors will assist you with field dressing and share some of their favorite recipes and uses of the harvest

Join us for an amazing four day journey on the Superior Hiking Trail in Minnesota Wersquoll start at 9am on Thursday at Pingora Outdoors in Ankeny IA drive to Minnesota and spend the first evening near the trail head The next two full days will be spent backpacking on the Superior Hiking Trail and on Sunday wersquoll pack up and drive back to Ankeny The trip will include lodging all meals transportation and group gear Stunning overlooks of Lake Superior and cascading waterfalls will highlight this trip

Ever wanted to try a pistol rifle shotgun or archery Join us for a day at the range The day will focus on teaching basic archery rifle shotgun and pistol safety shooting techniques and range etiquette All firearms bows and ammunition will be provided Once the shooting is done the instructors will teach you how take apart clean and store the firearms

This clinic will begin on Saturday with four sessions led by some of Iowarsquos most passionate female bird hunters The sessions will provide instruction on everything from bird habitat places to hunt necessary gear firearms hunting methods selecting and training bird dogs and so much more On Sunday wersquoll finish with breakfast followed by a morning bird hunt Once the hunt is over the instructors will assist you with field dressing and share some of their favorite recipes and uses of the harvest
