Summer Academy for Teachers

Supporting classrooms with teaching resourcesWHAT WE DODrawing on the unmatched collection and expertise of the

Folger Shakespeare Library, Folger Education makes world-

class scholarship, performance, and classroom practice

accessible and grows knowledge and confidence in teach-

ers and students. Through a mix of classroom resources and

professional development programs, we connect teachers,

and through them, their students of all ages and stages,

directly and actively to Shakespeare’s words and ideas.

Folger Education and the Folger Shakespeare Library have

revolutionized the way Shakespeare is taught, providing

print and digital editions of Shakespeare’s works and show-

ing how the study of these works hones literacy and skills

across key academic areas.

Since the early 1980s, 32,000 teachers—and counting—

have participated in our flagship Teaching Shakespeare

Institute and attended our seminars and workshops.

Thousands more have used our online curricular materials,

enriching the education of millions of students annually in

classrooms across America.

WHO WE AREFolger Shakespeare Library was founded in 1932 as a gift from

Henry and Emily Folger to the American people. Our landmark

building, next to the United States Capitol, houses the single

largest collection of books, manuscripts, artwork, and other

materials by and about William Shakespeare, including 82

unique copies of the First Folio, the 1623 first collection of

Shakespeare’s plays.

Our mission is to preserve and enhance our collection,

to make it accessible, and to help build the future of the

humanities by connecting teachers, students, and the gen-

eral public to Shakespeare and his world.
